Platypus Waterhole
The place is phenomenal. Every morning you will get to hear birds singing and the stream near your camp as its right beside a merging of two creek. View is amazing, from the sparkling waters to a ray of sunlight hitting the trees and the curves of the mountain side in the afternoon. Theres a resident wombat as well that will run around from time to time that our kids love to watch and follow. Amenities are complete which make the stay even more comfortable from hot showers, barbecue grill to a fridge! Lastly you get to book the entire place, no noisy camping neighbours just the sound of birds, winds and the stream of water.

Group of 6 days and 13 kids had a fantastic time.
Great setup and Russ was a great host.
For a big group, the space worked perfectly — enough room to play, explore, and still feel like we were tucked away in nature

First time novice campers & really enjoyed it here! Completely private, spacious and absolutely relaxing. The serenity is unreal. I would suggest a 4x4 for access as the dirt road down is quite bumpy etc. We seen a fair few wombats, kangaroos, birds, turtles & more wildlife! If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle this is it! We did a few nature walks (grand canyon & lochleys pylon - both no more than 40 min away) only a 20/25 min drive to blackheath. Honestly we can’t wait to come back!

I'm almost reluctant to share how wonderful this place is. It's big enough for a group weekend but we were selfish and booked it for just the 2 of us for 4 nights over the June long weekend. It was freezing but the owner supplied plenty of wood thank you. The amenities are better than your average camp kitchen and the ability to have a hot shower (outdoor) was a real treat for a camper. We loved the fire place under cover that was also a treat in winter. A well thought out shelter and we were glad of it. The views are spectacular and the animals abundant. Just loved the wombats.
Thanks for having us. We will return.

What a View this campsite has, Spectacular !, The huge shed / camp kitchen was definitely a highlight, big open fire and plenty of room to laze around. Plenty of Wallaby's and Kangaroo's around including the local cattle. Its like your in your own private bubble down there, beautiful stream and if your lucky like we were the platypus come out to play in the morning. The dirt road in is quite narrow with a couple of hairpin turns, something to be mindful of if you have a large caravan, we towed a 6mtr camper trailer which wasn't an issue, Oh and the sunrises are defintely worth getting up for. Ross and Sharon were very friendly and Ross came down to show us how to turn on the hot water for the shower.

My friends and I stayed here two nights, but we could have stayed a week or two. The hosts were lovely and easy to deal with. The site is private, quiet and well-equipped. It's easy to find and not far from Blackheath and Katoomba. If you're coming from Sydney I suggest take the scenic route through Bilpin and stop at Hillybilly Cider Brewery and The Grumpy Baker for some sourdough and pastries.
Also, we saw a wombat. Woo!

We had such a beautiful stay at the Platypus Waterhole. Absolute serene tranquility in the valley, with all the amenities you could need whilst camping. If you’re thinking of staying here- just do it! You won’t regret it.

Our family had a wonderful stay at Platypus Waterhole. The shelter was well utilised as it rained fairly heavily for most of our stay. Loved having the protected fire pit, gas bbq, and hot water for showers and washing dishes. The property with the river running through it is beautiful. Loved the resident wombat that would visit the site every afternoon for a few hours. Thanks very much Sharon and Ross for a lovely stay. We’ll definitely be back.

Platypus waterhole was an unreal experience, from the moment we got there, the grounds the amenities was just amazing, there was plenty of space to pitch tents and undercover area was an added bonus…. Sharon and her husband were great, they were very accommodating and helpful…Oh and George their dog was very friendly too… would definitely be back if they would have us… and would definitely recommend to other friends and family

Thank you Sharon, Ross and George the three legged dog! My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our time here. The rolling hills were stunning. We loved waking up to the dawn chorus - listening to rosellas and the babbling creek. The hosts were wonderful in making us feel welcome and we adored hearing about the history of the well
-looked after property. The structure was a god send during the rain. All the brilliant details from the big firepit with the hotplate and the little moon carving in the dunny door were just so thoughtful! As the sun was setting, we saw a wombat come out of its burrow for a feed and it was just so special to witness.
Your dedication to sustainability not only nurtures the land but also creates a brighter future for all of us. Keep up the amazing and inspiring work. We will be back! Liz & John

What a phenomenal campsite. Spent Father’s Day weekend here with 3 families. So much space to spread out, enjoy nature, and spend time together around the fire. The hut is a great space for a cook up and sharing meals. The site is very level for tents and vans. We got our 15ft off grid van in and out without issue, towed by a Chev Silverado on dry ground. AWD cars would be fine as long as you’ve got decent clearance. We saw the platypus in the early morning which was exciting, as well as a couple of lovely wombats, and lots of bird life. This is such an amazing space and we will definitely return for future gatherings! Big thanks to Sharon and Ross for their hospitality and beautiful property!

amazing stay away! Nature right on your doorstep and a beautiful maintained property with amazing history as told by the owner. Also local for all Blue Mountains activities which was great! We felt very at peace on this property & will be back.

Loved the hot outdoor shower in mid winter. Best drop toilet we have ever seen. Very private setting. Well equipped kitchen, living space, open fire places and great hosts. Would happily stay again and recommend to others. The access road is an easy drive but slippery when wet and we did need 4WD at times.

Awesome place for camping and getting away from it all.
Beautiful landscape, peaceful water flowing nearby. Didn’t spot a platypus but they’re there apparently.
Great open plan kitchen and fire. Hot shower. Comfortable place to get away with friends and/or family. Cold fridge was helpful. Great mid season, not too hot or cold.

Amazing location quite remote but habitation only over the hill. Lots of birds and a rakali in the creek ( unmistakeable white tipped tail) .

Platypus watering hole is a magical place. We camped here for my birthday celebration and enjoyed this peaceful spot bustling with nature. While we didn't spot a platypus there were wombats, a water rat and a menagerie of birds.
The facilities are excellent. The central hub has had burners, a bbq and cooking utensils. With indoor and outdoor fire pits we were spoilt for choice on where to congregate. The shower was hot and the beers stayed cool in the fridge.
A note on the drive down. It is only 4x4 accessible. I've thought about this long and hard and think you would either get stuck or damage a 2wd regular car. It's a farm track, unsurfaced, for 2km down into the valley, crossing drainage ditches and over a stream. While fun in a 4x4 in a saloon I would have bottomed out several times and probably not been able to climb the steep, gravel section after the stream crossing. In short, don't try it. I rented a 4x4 from Turo and recommend the same so you can enjoy this spot.
