Our property contains the first road in and out of Colo - the original road is supported by hand built dry rock walls some of which are over 3 m high. Often referred to as convict built, but more likely built by freemen who were former convicts. The property housed the load master's residence who controlled the cargo boats that docked to collect the valley’s produce. This was then transported back down the Colo River which flows into the Hawkesbury river and leads to Broken Bay following the coastline down to Old Sydney Town. The beach diagonally across the river was landed upon by members of the First Fleet’s exploratory scouting party on the lookout for quality farm land - some of which is still in production today. Our property is on the uppermost reach of freshwater but with tidal influence. This deep water allows swimming and canoeing all year round. Some of our campsites/ Van sites DO NOT come with facilities. Please read your site description carefully. We have 1 powered site that is power ONLY on our Dam site. Cranky Rock was the perfect quick weekend get away. Far enough away from the city but close enough that you can duck back to Cessnock if needed. We snagged the ideal spot in camp with dappled shade throughout the day. Although the toilets are non flushing they are clean and accessible. Pam came to check on us when we arrived and other than that we were left to enjoy the peace and quiet.

We loved camping at Cranky Rock. The view was absolutely breathtaking. Plenty of space between us and other happy campers. The toilet facilities were the cleanest drop pits I've ever seen. We both needed a peaceful place to unwind and rejuvenate and this place is exactly that! We will return again. Thank you Pam and Lindsay

Beautiful campsite with plenty of shaded areas. A lovely forest at the back of the property to wander around in. Also the location of the Bunyip gives easy access to the national parks in the area. Lisa is easy going and very helpful. The amenities are in my view to rustic. Definitely worth staying a few nights.

Weekend Trip to Whispering Gums Colo River Camping

We had a fantastic time at Whispering Gums. There’s lots of space between camping spots and most of them have some cover under trees. It’s right next to the beautiful Colo River which had varied levels of water depth that has good areas for small dogs and kids. Toilets are nice and clean. The firepits were a good size and we got value purchasing the firewood and kindling. Make sure you follow their provided directions on getting there. There’s a big difference in road quality between the two possible routes!

Weekend Trip to C Colo - just beautiful

We had a great time with just two of us at C Colo but can see it would also work really well for groups too. There is variety between the campsites and we found a perfect little one to suit just us. Steve and Danielle were great hosts and we enjoyed a good chat. It rained on arrival but the land dried quickly and it wasn't an issue at all. We will absolutely come back to explore more on a longer stay soon!

Weekend Trip to Jila Camp Grounds

Camping at Jila Campgrounds was an experience. The mountain-perched site with river frontage is perfect, lovely for kayaking or just unwinding by the water. They provide toilets and showers, which makes things comfortable. The campground feels very safe, even for solo campers, and it’s pet-friendly so Kyoto was happy exploring. One great thing: there’s no reception or mobile signal, which is ideal if you want to disconnect. Just make sure you save all your important notes offline before you arrive. The owner was super helpful. When our car broke down, he helped us get it working again. That kind of support made a big difference. A word of caution: during a short but heavy rain with strong wind, a nearby car was struck by a falling tree. It’s wise to camp a little distance from large trees if the weather turns. Overall, I really like this place: mountain views, riverside calm, and a helpful owner. It’s about an hour from us, and we’d definitely go back.

Fabulous place. So much space that no matter how many people are camping you still have plenty of room. A couple of toilets and a shower were an added bonus. Alana was looking after the property while the owners were away and did an exceptional job. She visited everyone to check if we needed anything a few times a day. She was particularly happy to visit us because we had our Newfoundland Gracie with us 😊We will definitely visit again. Also love that it is only 25 minutes from home 😀

Loved the location, the river was beautiful and really enjoyed the facilities. I personally think the drive in with a trailer on the back is a 4wd road, not just because it's steep and bumpy but my 2wd was too low. Once in we had a fantastic time and appreciated being allowed to use the neighbours drive to leave from. Thanks for having us!
