In the early 1970’s Mr James, the owner of 'Biara', subdivided three 25 acre blocks across the road from the original homestead. The first block was sold to his nephew, the middle block was to be purchased by the Preston family and ‘The Gateway’ was purchased by a Mr Carveth. Unfortunately, the sale of the middle block fell through then, due to family illness, 'Biara' was sold and the family moved to Blackheath. After this move, and as thank you to his son, Mr James transferred the title of the middle of the three subdivided blocks to his only son, William. Back in the late 1960’s, early 1970’s, the area was vastly different than it is today. Travelling to school entailed a car trip to Hargraves then bus to Mudgee which would have been a 2 hour round trip! The area was far more isolated as there was no power and entailed an overland phone line, which had to be regularly repaired if residents wanted to be able to communicate with the outside world. The site allows mainly for camping and relaxing although there are numerous dirt roads to explore, Mudgee wineries close by and Burrendong Dam not far away (accessible via Hill End Road near Erudgere). Hargraves is also known for it's alluvial gold deposits and fossickers still go there regularly to check out Louisa Creek. There is 15km's of dirt road which needs to be traveled to reach the property. Dependent on weather, and if it has been graded recently, this road can be in varying states of repair. In heavy rain it may be difficult to get 2WD access via the public road due to the clay content in the road . Kangaroo, wallaby, owl species, kookaburra, echidna, snakes, various lizards, including shinglebacks, are often seen on these roads and the property.

Really beautiful property with both wildlife and farm animals. The caretakers were lovely and very helpful and lots of options for activities. We did the canoeing which was on a small but very beautiful area of the river. The camping area is neat but not super private. Would be great for big groups of families as the sites are unmarked. Facilities were also really clean and well maintained.

I had the most incredible stay! From the moment we arrived, everything exceeded expectations. The view alone was worth the trip – the kind that makes you stop in your tracks and just breathe it all in. Sunrise, sunset, even the quiet moments in between… every angle felt like a postcard. Our host was absolutely outstanding. Warm, thoughtful, and genuinely passionate about making our stay perfect. Every little detail was considered, and their recommendations made the experience even better. And the activities were unforgettable. Whether we were exploring, relaxing, or trying something new, there was always something exciting to do. It felt like the perfect balance of adventure and ease. Very private. Only two sites which are approx 200m apart. Right on the Fish river on a lovely location. Horses came down to the river and were very friendly. Safe swimming and some lovely cascades. Beautiful starry skies.

Awesome spot to camp!! Beautiful ground, toilet and shower facilities were wonderful. The kids loved the roaming horses that would stroll by in the morning and arvo, and the river is nice and shallow so they could play in it all day long. Was a perfect stay for myself and two kids under 5. Thanks for having us!

Beautiful spot on the river. Beach site has the nicest river access but also to the left just down you also have some rapids. Horses visited in the afternoon for a lovely swim. Yes on a farm and have to expect not to have manicured grass area for camping, but probably the length where it needed to be cut. Also take arrogated for flies (it was hot and a farm so everywhere). Was a gorgeous location and the singing birds everyday and the cattle and sheep across the river made it feel like you were worlds away. Loved our stay

Beautiful location, peaceful during the week, very good facilities, and a very friendly owner; we would recommend it. Keep in mind that a lot of the river walks require crossing the river many times over slippery rocks. We set up a bit too far from the toilets but we didn’t want to get too close to the geese, I would recommend setting up closer if you can. Everything you need to know is communicated very well before arrival. The drive in is definitely doable in my all wheel drive but be prepared for lots of steep crests and blind corners. Would recommend and would come here again, preferably when it’s warmer.
