The creeks have waterfalls, swimming holes, pure and clean, though are a rugged unmarked hike. The sites are site only. You’ll need to take care of your waste, water, rubbish and power. Generator is ok, we’re out of earshot, so is everyone else. Each site has a picnic table and a fire pit and an abundance of ‘cut your own’ firewood upon the ground. Remember, fires this time of year are for ‘cooking only’, so be sure to bring those marshmallows… Pet Friendly, 4WD friendly with a bunch of serious challenges too… Horse friendly too, yep, there’s a yard to keep them too, up by the house. Accessible by 2WD with sites with enough space for any size caravan or motor home. While exploring, if you find a spot you’d rather camp, simply ask. We live on the property so help is nearby for any issues and the access road is shared. Peace, quiet and nature abounds.

Horse-shoe bordered by 2km of Goolmangar Creek - known platypus habitat. Secluded - but only 5-min drive to Nimbin village, the alternative capital (pop 1,600) of Australia. Sites are out of eye-shot from 'the others'. Limit of five dispersed sites across 30 acres. You'll need to Arrive Before Dark to be directed. Really, you do. Creek-sites suit experienced, self-contained campers (with 4wd) that like a bit of space. & know how to deal with their own shit. Literally. (Update: we're now in a dry spell meaning all sites are currently accessible with 2wd.) Cons: MUST check-in before dark. Camping (especially creek sites) is weather-dependent - not accessible in extended periods of rain (by 4wd, or otherwise) - but who wants to camp in the rain anyway? In 'dry-windows' (which we have now!) , even 2wd is fine, but do check the forecast/correspond with me before booking. If it's looking grim, it's cool to cancel with 24-hrs notice. It's a farm. Not a centralized campground offering full-amenities or caravan access. As free-range campers 'on-that-farm, there are some free-range cows' (& chooks) . So you'll need to partially share the land with them. They're somewhat curious, but not aggressive.

Our property is an easy walking distance to the local village where you will find the shop/ general store and the pub is dog friendly. It's around 1km to The Channon Craft Market grounds, and the markets are on the second Sunday of each month. Lots of crafts, clothes, jewellery, gifts, food stalls and entertainers to see and enjoy. This campsite is located right on the banks of the flowing creek. It's a private site with access to two good swimming holes. Enjoy warming your feet around the campfire in the evenings, subject to fireban conditions. We welcome only self-contained campers who bring their own camping shower and drinking water. There is access to rubbish facilities. For those wanting to explore a bit further we are 15kms from Nightcap National Park and the beautiful Protesters Falls. You will not hear traffic, you will not see headlights. Pure peace and tranquility for you to relax, chill and enjoy. The sites are surrounded by rugged mountainous bush land with views, trails, cliffs, 3 creeks to explore and includes a private lake ‘Lake Arid’ with its own island, ‘Dead Dog Island’. Swim, paddle, fish, play. Metres away is another private swimming hole ‘Pants Off Pond’ stocked with Silver Perch and Bass. So whether you indulge in pants off, or leave them on and just fish it’s up to you. Explore a little further and you’ll find ‘The Abyss’ a former micro quarry, 9m deep waterhole. The creeks have waterfalls, swimming holes, pure and clean, though are a rugged unmarked hike. The sites are site only. You’ll need to take care of your waste, water, rubbish and power. Generator is ok, we’re out of earshot, so is everyone else. Each site has a picnic table and a fire pit and an abundance of ‘cut your own’ firewood upon the ground. Remember, fires this time of year are for ‘cooking only’, so be sure to bring those marshmallows… Pet Friendly, 4WD friendly with a bunch of serious challenges too… Horse friendly too, yep, there’s a yard to keep them too, up by the house. Accessible by 2WD with sites with enough space for any size caravan or motor home. While exploring, if you find a spot you’d rather camp, simply ask. We live on the property so help is nearby for any issues and the access road is shared. Peace, quiet and nature abounds.

Gob-smacking views of Nimbin Rocks. Photos can't convey the mystical presence you get in real life - it's like camping inside a poem. Horse-shoe bordered by 2km of Goolmangar Creek - known platypus habitat. Secluded - but only 5-min drive to Nimbin village, the alternative capital (pop 1,600) of Australia. Sites are out of eye-shot from 'the others'. Limit of five dispersed sites across 30 acres. You'll need to Arrive Before Dark to be directed. Really, you do. Creek-sites suit experienced, self-contained campers (with 4wd) that like a bit of space. & know how to deal with their own shit. Literally. (Update: we're now in a dry spell meaning all sites are currently accessible with 2wd.) Cons: MUST check-in before dark. Camping (especially creek sites) is weather-dependent - not accessible in extended periods of rain (by 4wd, or otherwise) - but who wants to camp in the rain anyway? In 'dry-windows' (which we have now!) , even 2wd is fine, but do check the forecast/correspond with me before booking. If it's looking grim, it's cool to cancel with 24-hrs notice. It's a farm. Not a centralized campground offering full-amenities or caravan access. As free-range campers 'on-that-farm, there are some free-range cows' (& chooks) . So you'll need to partially share the land with them. They're somewhat curious, but not aggressive.

Sugar beach ranch is a really special place. Right on the beach with gorgeous forest and horse paddocks surrounding. The campsite is lovely with nice shady trees, toilet and water. I took my horse for a horse stay which was awesome for sunrise and sunset rides. It’s a nice spot with a horse or without. The pool is lovely too. Hosts were lovely and helpful. Highly recommend!

Great, hassle free and private location. Very close to Uki. Has a nice small flowing waterway wrapping around campsite and host had mowed site prior to our arrival. Was also grateful to be able to have shower on our way out. Highly recommended if you are fairly self sufficient. Great spot for an over nighter.

We stayed for two nights at the Big Dam Camp Site and it was absolutely beautiful. Anna’s hospitality was incredible — she went above and beyond during our stay, and I would 100% recommend this place. We’ll definitely be back! 🥰 We forgot our gas bottles and all the firewood was wet, but Anna helped us out and even lent us her own gas bottle. We’re so thankful for such an amazing host! The campsite we chose had a little dam with a kayak, was extremely private, and was exactly what we were looking for. Perfect spot for a peaceful getaway!

We stayed at the Family Tree camp. It was a beautiful spot next to a running creek. Host was wonderful, greeted us at the front, Anna and her two gorgeous dogs escorted us to our camp. The camp itself was quiet, secluded and felt like there was no body around! Level ground with an amazing view of the mountain. Cattle in the distance and overall just an incredible property. Not much else you can ask for. Definitely recommend to anyone thinking of staying here!!

We had an incredible stay at Big Dam Camp, Tweed Valley (Doon Doon Farm). The views were absolutely stunning, and the sense of isolation made it feel like our own private piece of paradise. When to go

Like the rest of the NSW North Coast and Northern Rivers region, Ballina gets very busy during summer and Easter school holidays. The best time to go is late spring or early autumn when you’ll find the beaches practically deserted, along with warm weather. June through to November is the best time to see whales.

Know before you go

The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is just 5 kilometres from the centre of Ballina, and is well serviced by domestic flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle, and Canberra.
The Ballina Visitor Information Centre is at 6 River St, and has easy parking for large motorhomes and caravans.
There is no free camping in the Ballina Shire.
Don’t leave Ballina without snapping a selfie at the Big Prawn—it’s nine metres high and weighs 35 tonnes. You’ll find it in the carpark of Bunnings hardware store on River Street.
