As the largest National Forest in the state (571,000+ acres!), Apalachicola is Florida’s one-stop-shop for outdoors activities. Since the forest takes up so much space it also encompasses a multitude of ecosystems, allowing you to explore old pine forests, cypress-encircled lakes, marshlands, pitcher plant fields, gentle rivers, brackish waters, and karst sinks. You’re able to do most anything here, so long as it doesn’t requiring a roof or electricity: hiking, bivouacking, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, birding, mountain biking, off-roading, and horseback riding are all great here. During the winter, hunting deer is big here if you’re an avid hunter (or if you have an irrational hatred of deer that you feel the need to act on).
