Looking for a personal retreat or get away ?  Escape to our beautiful, RUSTIC 34 acre wild homestead / farm.

This is a working medicinal herb farm, a community of beautiful souls,  as well as our home. Please read all of our guidelines for camping here thoroughly, as well as Arrival Instructions, so that you can be well prepared ahead of time. We are happy to answer questions, however most of the answers to your questions will be listed  in the info we've given. *We do not provide firewood, but you can buy a bundle from 7/11 or Food lion just down the road,

Feel free to wander through the herb gardens, eat your meals in the garden pavilion (we have picnic tables), hang out in the hammocks, get your Zen on in the meditation hut (if no one is staying in there- please be respectful and check first to see if it is occupied), and stroll through the woodland medicine path where we grow endangered  and at at risk plants. You may see our dog, Tulsi and cats Suki and Una wandering about. They are all friendly, just please let Tulsi sniff you first. She is old and going blind, and that helps. We have 2 campsites and they are not numbered (even though Hicamp numbers them) pick whichever one is available.

Downtown Shepherdstown, the Potomac River and the C &O Trail is just 10 minutes away. Upon arrival, grab a handout from the box on the visitor parking sign. The map on the back has a layout of the land and should point you in the right direction of campsites, water, shower, outhouse, and whatever else you might be looking for, including recommendations of great places to eat in town and fun things to do.

Shepherdstown  Peddle and Paddle in town offers rentals for kayaking , canoeing tubing or biking. We are also within an hour drive to the Appalachian Trail and several state parks - Harper’s Ferry, Washington Monument State Park, Gathland State Park , Shenandoah  National Park and Catoctin Mountain State  Park  !!

We offer a variety of classes and events on the weekends as well. Small groups... not to worry. We have 34 acres, so there is plenty of space. If you would like to know what we are offering for the  weekend, you can visit our website sacredrootswv.com. Self guided audio tours where you can learn about the healing properties of all the medicinal plants in the herb gardens are available, for an extra $15 when you book your site. It will be emailed to you upon reservation confirmation.

- Campfires -  We do not provide firewood. Please bring your own firewood bundle. 7-Eleven and Food Lion  just 10 minutes away has some for sale, and you are welcome to forage from downed trees and branches . Woodpile in front of yurt (our home) and in Sacred Circle is not for public use. Please DO NOT burn fires in Sacred Circle fire ring (we use that for ceremony only), or fire ring by yurt . Thanks.

-Some cell service does not work out here. We have AT and T. Verizon is spotty if it all.

- Maps of land and local tips located in box under parking sign.

- Potable drinking water is available . Bring container for filling. Water pump location is on map.

- Camping  is permitted in designated areas only.

- There is a railroad track about 10 miles away. If you are a light sleeper, we recommend bringing ear plugs.

Hillary and crew have created a beautiful oasis just outside of DC that was a joy to discover. We camped in solitude, surrounded by nature, and enjoyed exploring both the farm and nearby Shepherdstown. We particularly appreciated the butterflies and gracious people we encountered on the farm.

My friend and I came here in late August and we had a great time! We didn't actually interact with our host face-to-face; I think they were busy but that was fine as we were looking for a private weekend. Hilary gave instructions about the site before we came and we had no trouble finding anything. The farm is really nice and we loved how private it was, just you and nature really. We saw a fair amount of deer which was great! We had a great time taking walks during the evening. We really loved our stay! We had brunch in Sheperdstown which is nearby and had a fun time exploring the town. We absolutely recommend this campsite to anyone who is looking for some peace away from it all. We are from DC so we really needed this peaceful weekend. Thanks so much Hilary; we really enjoyed our stay!

My friend and I loved camping at Sacred Roots Herbal Sanctuary! This was such a fun find and was the perfect weekend escape from DC. We had so much fun exploring the farm and especially loved lounging in the hammocks near the pavilion. Hillary was out of town during our stay, so we didn't get to meet face-to-face, but she made sure we had all the information we needed ahead of time to have a seamless visit. Would happily camp here again!

We had a great time camping with our 7-year-old daughter! The camp site was spacious and secluded without being complicated to reach. An outhouse was a short walk away, and there was a very clean shower available—both of which were a big help when camping with a kid! The herb gardens are beautiful, and the garden pavilion gave us tables and space to spread out to play board games. Everyone we met on site was friendly and welcoming, including Tulsi the farm dog and the cat we met. All three camp sites were occupied while we were there, but we never felt like we were too close to other people, or that our privacy was disturbed.

My only issue—not the fault of the farm!—was that a train frequently travels close by in the middle of the night. I was surprised it wasn’t mentioned in any other reviews, because the whistle definitely woke us up several times and made it tough to sleep! If you’re used to those sorts of sounds at night, I’m sure it’s possible to tune it out, but I would have liked a heads up so I knew to bring earplugs.

Near the garden pavilion. Our daughter loved exploring!View of the herb gardens in late July. There are two tent sites. This one (to the right of the parking field) had lots of open space for our large tent plus a hammock and table. The other was more charming and cozy, but better for a small/average sized tent.

Thanks for bringing that to our attention Jessica. We are so used to it that we don't even notice the train whistle. I've added a heads up for light sleepers in our posting regarding the earplugs.

What a wonderful and magical space! Hillary & her husband have created a true garden of Eden on their property. The space is rustic and private, but still, has the benefit of a hot shower + compost toilet. There are tons of things to explore on the property, the herb garden, medicine trails in the forest, and a lovely space for hanging in a hammock and enjoying the view (especially at night when the fireflies are dancing!). The town, Shepherdstown, is only a short 10 minute drive and offers plenty to explore, eat, and connect with the local community. Thursday & Sunday's farmers market are a MUST. There are plenty of other activities, including swimming, kayaking, hiking and more to enjoy in the area. I could not recommend this space more & will back again!

This rustic little farm is gorgeous. We had fun wandering around the property, hanging in the hammocks, and kicking it with the chickens. They’ve got an water pump, outdoor shower and an outhouse (immaculate as far as outhouses go). The sites are well kept. And a few hundred yards from one another, though we set up near the yurt. Even though it’s not completely private—-it pretty much felt like it. We had the good fortune of running into a resident carpenter on the farm who was nice enough to save our butts and loan us his stove after we got the wrong fuel for ours.

We came in on a rainy day, and the mosquitoes were minimal. It’s close to Shepardstown, and 30min to Harpers Ferry. Great little farm to spend time, near lots of things to go see and do. We didn’t get to meet the hosts but communication was easy and getting around on the farm is even easier. Can’t wait to go back!

Lovely peaceful night on an off the grid herb farm. We felt safe and comfortable. The mobile fire ring was great and the free fire wood much appreciated. I will also admit i really enjoyed the (super clean and comfy) outhouse, thank you Hillary and the whole team at Sacred Root!

I highly recommend staying At Sacred Root! It’s a beautiful, peaceful spot that is such a wonderful alternative to camping at loud campgrounds with tiny camping spots. It’s also a great alternative, if you are a single woman looking to do some solo camping in the area. I felt very safe. Hillary is wonderful and the work they are doing at Sacred Root is very inspiring (I was lucky to be camping on a day, when they were having a plant sale). It’s a short 10 minute drive to the fantastic town of Shepherdstown, so the location can’t be beat! Highly recommend!

Hillary was a wonderful and thoughtful host, although we didn’t see her much as we were given our privacy as well. She so kindly offered us free fresh strawberries from her garden when we woke up!

The campsite itself was beautiful, surrounded by trees. It was fun to explore the site as campers were welcome to use the meditation hut, herb garden, etc...

I would definitely come back again! :)
