Past trips
Melrose Cavern
in Traveler's Meadow, VirginiaThis is a cool little campground close to both Shenandoah and GW National Forest. Nathan was a wonderful host. The composting toilet was a nice amenity, and the fire rings, grates, and wagon wheel picnic tables were also a big plus! The sites were a little close together, so it was a little on the noisy side. We unfortunately had to cut our stay short because one of our dogs could not deal with the sound of the door to the toilet slamming and wouldnât stop barking. Sorry to our neighbors for his behavior!
Site 4
in Bears Den Campground, VirginiaBabbling Brook
in Bo and Jen's Mountain Retreat, VirginiaThis place really is a gem. The campsites on Johnâs property are more secluded than NPS sites, and the other reviews are right, that is the cleanest looking (and smelling) privy Iâve ever seen. There was potable water, a tripod for campfire cooking, tons of firewood, and a little sink for hand washing. John was also extremely welcoming and friendly. Canât wait to come back!
Bark Peelers (Site 2)
in Austin Dam Memorial Park, PennsylvaniaHuge site, great weekend
My boyfriend, dog and I stayed at site #2 and it was wonderful. The site was massive and right next to a creek, with multiple fire rings and a charcoal grill. We brought a cast iron skillet and cooked over the grate provided on one of the fire rings. Checking in at the visitors center was a breeze and the eggs were such a treat! There is potable water at a well at the visitors center, but we mostly used backpacking filters from the creek because the site was a little ways away from the visitors center. The only downside was the siteâs proximity to the road. Otherwise, hearing the creek and owls all night was just the relaxing getaway we needed :)
