Escape to a private forest tucked behind two peaceful lakes and a dam. Camp beneath towering trees, fish or kayak on the water, and enjoy wildlife by day and stargazing by night. Guests are welcome to cut and use forest wood for campfires or projects (please avoid large trees), adding to the adventure.
There’s even a blossoming pile of firewood right in front of the property. When you arrive, look for a post marked with the number 6—this is the property. You’ll also see a surveyor’s stake in the ground with pink string and blue yarn.
This natural retreat offers plenty of space for tents, hammocks, or small RVs, giving you both freedom and privacy. Please don’t disturb the small shed, but if you see it, you’re in the right place! Whether you’re here to relax, recharge, or explore, this forest hideaway is the perfect off-grid escape.

Delightful, funky, funny-farm with camping spots on a pond. Horses, chickens, goats, turkeys and a wise old dog are all part of the adventure. We thoroughly enjoyed our stopover on Allyssa’s property.

The natural wetlands of the Snow White Sanctuary were absolutely beautiful! We arrived late (well after dark) but the hosts came out and showed us where we could set up our tent. The dogs were so friendly and came out to greet us. We heard the horses too, but we only saw them in the morning. (Callie, the mare, wasn't too fond of being pet, but she didn't mind being admired from afar :) The only downside to this location is that there aren't really any hiking trails (only one that goes around their property, definitely less than a mile). There was a slight mishap as we were leaving (there are a lot of dogs, mostly rescued, at this location and their neighbors) and some of them got in a dogfight near the gate. But Alyssa came out and it was resolved. The animals are all very tolerant towards people, and I would recommend Snow White Sanctuary to anyone wanting to experience Louisiana's natural wetlands in a peaceful, animal-filled environment!

The host was extremely friendly. Loved all of the animals. We unfortunately were only passing through on our cross-country road trip showed up at night and then had to leave pretty early in the morning. But it was a really cool experience. All of the animals were friendly. While we were cooking dinner a sweet dog came up to us and then a horse walked past our tent site that was really cool. Shared bathroom which was really nice, and we didn't take showers, but you could take shower if you needed. The host has some cool projects going on the property. Which we kindly invited us to check out.

About
Set at the edge of Big Thicket, the park is home to Village Creek, one of the few free-flowing creeks in Texas and a popular spot for flat-water canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. Hike or mountain bike eight miles of trails, including some suitable for young kids and others that cut through a diverse terrain of swamps, wetlands, forests, and savannahs. Overnight options include primitive walk-in campsites, campsites with electric and water hookups, a group campsite, and a cabin. Don’t miss the excellent nature center and its ranger-led programs that include night hikes and stargazing.
Notable campgrounds
- Best for tent campers and water access: Closest to the creek, the Creekside Walk-in Campground offers 15 sites with tent pads, picnic tables, and fire rings.
- Best for RVs: The Hilltop Campground has 25 sites with electric and water hookups.
- Best for groups: The Village Creek Sponsored Youth Group Campground offers space for up to 50.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- For peak season stays, plan to make a reservation as soon as you know your dates. The cabin and campsites can be reserved up to five months in advance and the group camp up to 12 months in advance.
- If your plans are flexible, try to visit the year-round park during the week, during non-holiday periods, or in winter to escape the crowds.
- If you don’t have a reservation, arrive at the park first thing in the morning to grab any potential unreserved site.
When to go
The park is busiest from February to September—spring and fall are the best times to see migratory birds. Heavy rains can cause the Village Creek to severely flood, something that regularly occurs every few years.
Know before you go
- The park is part of the Village Creek Paddling Trail. Bring your own canoe or kayak, or rent from local outfitters and guide services.
- Fishing licenses are not required to fish from shore.
- Neither glass nor pets are permitted in the canoe launch and fishing area, where kids must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
- The cabin, group picnic pavilion, and several campsites, showers, and restrooms at the Hilltop Campground are wheelchair-accessible.
- Bring your binoculars. The park is home to more than 200 bird species—and alligators.
- Fires are only permitted in provided fire rings. Bring your firewood or purchase from the park.
