🐐 Goat Crossing Campground – Rustic Camping, Goats & Prairie Charm Welcome to Goat Crossing Campground, where you can pitch a tent, pet a goat, and fall asleep under wide open South Dakota skies. We’re a small, family-run homestead tucked just off the Bad River, and less than a mile from Pierre/Fort Pierre — quiet, quirky, and full of charm. This is primitive camping with a few perks: • Flat spots for tents (choose your own!) • 120V outlet available for phone charging or lights • Water hydrants throughout property. • Fire pit access (firewood available for purchase) • Goats nearby that might say hi (or try to eat your shoelaces) • Fresh eggs often available from our happy hens There are no bathrooms or showers, so this is a “pack in, pack out” stay best suited for self-contained campers who enjoy a back-to-basics experience. (Yes, it’s rustic. No, it’s not weird. Okay, maybe just a little weird in the best way.) You’re welcome to walk the property, visit the animals, and enjoy a little slice of slow country life. We’re close to fishing, kayaking, and peaceful prairie hiking. It’s a great spot to unwind, disconnect from busy life, and reconnect with the land (and some very curious goats). Friendly pets are welcome—just please keep them leashed and respectful of our critters. We’re a real, homestead with a laid-back vibe, homegrown goodness, and a few surprises. If you like starry skies, farm sounds, and fresh air with a side of goat mischief—you’ll fit right in here at Goat Crossing.

Overview

About

Located along the Lewis and Clark Trail, West Bend Recreation Area is kind of a big deal for its walleye and small mouth bass fishing, enhanced by stable lake levels and cool water temps. Much of the fishing around here is done from boats, and a protected marina makes it easy no matter which direction the wind is a-blowin’. In the autumn, hunters use the area as a base camp to seek out pheasants and Canadian geese. The park is also just 35 miles from the state capital of Pierre, where you can check out the Cultural Heritage Center and Discovery Center and Aquarium. If you’re lucky you can also attend a powwow, or wacipi, held annually at local Native American reservations.

When to go

The ideal time to visit West Bend Recreation Area is during the spring and fall months, when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer brings warmth and a full bloom of park life, but also larger crowds. Winters can be harsh, with some amenities and areas possibly closed due to snow or ice.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast and prepare for sudden changes in conditions when planning your visit.
  • Ensure you have a valid park pass and are aware of any park-specific regulations or closures.
  • Wear appropriate footwear and clothing for hiking and other activities amid the park's diverse terrain.
  • Be mindful of wildlife and maintain a safe distance; this is their habitat.
  • Facilities may vary by season, so verify the availability of restrooms and picnic areas ahead of time.
