Weekend Trip to The Mill Creek Spread

5/5 stars for Vader. If you dont like dogs then dont waste his time with this site because he deserves all the love for the good work he does. He guided us out to our site, kept us company as we set up, and guided us out the next day when we were leaving. Truly one of the sweetest dogs I have ever encountered. The site itself is really nice for those who like to just pitch a tent and go rustic for a day. We went during the tropical storm, but the trails and camping space were sturdy enough that nothing flooded or got muddy. Do NOT disregard the tiny car warning, some tree gaps only have a space of about 6 1/4 feet. My Jeep Patriot fit fine but it was mirror to mirror in some gaps. The Host was extremely kind and the property is easy to find! Only about 30 minutes from Wrightsville Beach and there are 24/7 gas stations 5 minutes down the road if you are seeking a full bathroom. Highly recommend this place!

Weekend Trip to Canter Lakes Farm

We enjoyed our camping - the space was private and large with a tree swing for the kids. I did not have to worry about being the "loud family" since there were no other campsites nearby. Kayaks were available for use and the kids loved meeting and petting the pony. The hosts, Julie and Scott were awesome and readily available.

2 nights at The Secret Sanctuary Farm

James and Sola were very nice and welcoming! We stayed at Lokis lookout and enjoyed the serenity! Feeding the animals was a nice welcome to the property, and a great way to start off a quiet camping weekend. We found it super convenient that there was lots of camping equipment for cooking that was made available!

I went with my two young boys and we all loved it! We got rained on while we were enjoying Wilmington but the property owners helped us tremendously by letting us use some bedding. They were amazing to communicate with and so helpful! The property was beautiful and we wished we had more time to explore it. We will definitely be back!

Krystl and Pete are great people. They treated this newbie with nothing but kindness and patience. The property is stunning and there are plenty of ways to book a stay (RV, cabin, yurt) at Laurel Oaks. Plus, can't beat fresh eggs!

I absolutely can’t give enough praise for Jane’s hospitality and for the space itself. This is a kayaker’s dream spot for accessing inner waterways & secluded beaches. Plus you’re 10 minutes’ drive from shops and a 5 minute walk from a delicious restaurant. It’s such a peaceful haven — I spent a lotta time in the hammock watching birds and reading.

Site 8 was perfect for our long weekend beach trip to OIB! Wanted to save money but still wanted to come on the family vacation, so instead of missing out we decided to camp at Connies! Weekend Trip to Wander Inn Campers, Backpackers, RV

Our party of 3 loved staying at Lucian's place! The bed and hammock were comfortable, fans were strong, and the outdoor shower was hot. Lucian was very friendly and was on the porch to meet us at check-in time. There were many amenities provided including cookware and dishes, towels and blankets, coffee, and a few basic toiletries. The location was also awesome being only 30 minutes from the beach and 15 minutes from the Blueberry Festival in Burgaw. We'd love to stay here again next time we're back in the area!

Jane was the warmest kindest host. The site was great and we enjoyed our time down by the water under the stars. Can’t wait to go back!

We were living the dream last week at Canter Lakes Farm! The sun shade and bath house were the key amenities and letting the dog off the leash was a great perk. It was kayaking on the pond that put this location over the top! The hosts are so welcoming, too. Highly recommend.

I loved RV camping at Laurel Oaks! We were meeting friends for the first time and it was the perfect spot. Secluded, calm, peaceful, with the added security of a gate that only we knew the code to. This location was close to everything that Myrtle Beach had to offer but far enough away to relax! We will definitely be staying here again!!!

We are a private horse farm with beautiful swimming lakes and river access on site via “Sand Hill Creek” At canter lakes farm you can explore over 10 acres of water without ever leaving our property, and hike almost 3 miles of manicured trails here! If you’re an early riser you can witness the magnificent steam rolling in over the lakes, creek and cypress swamp while you sip your coffee at sunrise. Bring your paddle boards and cruise, or warm up with sunny yoga on your private dock. Kayak or John boats can explore the river bends from our property, or even make it out to the big wide cape fear. We are very close to two public boat ramps suitable for larger boats and jet skis. Holly Shelter boat ramp is literally 2 minutes away, Shelter Creek boat ramp is 10 minutes away. Both ramps have a fishing area and allow kayaks/paddle boards. Fishing is good on our ponds and the river year round, (bass, catfish, crappie, bowfin, gar, etc) in June hundreds of wild blueberry plants you can pick and eat. We also have prickly pear cacti for harvesting which you can cook the fruit and paddles over the fire and enjoy. If our trails aren’t enough and you want more adventure, just two miles away is the Holly Shelter game lands entrance where you’ll find thousands of acres for hunting, biking, hiking or horseback riding. And if you’re craving a beach day, Wrightsville beach is just a 30 minute drive away as well as is downtown Wilmington where you can enjoy walking the riverfront for shopping or dining. Go walk the riverfront, take a riverboat ride, visit a brewery and definitely go to see the battleship! This site is also a short drive to Wrightsville Beach approximately 20 minutes. (Going In yet another direction) The land is a twenty minute drive to charming Southport with shops, restaurants and the chance to see dolphins! Several movies have been filmed in the area. Also nearby you can go to see the Oak Island lighthouse. You can take the ferry from Southport to Bald Head island, ride golf carts and see the Bald Head Island Lighthouse and learn about saving turtles. Visit Carolina Beach (also known as Pleasure Island) which has a boardwalk, arcades, Brit’s donuts and the marina which offers boat cruises. Kure beach is and Carolina beach are both within about a thirty minute drive. On down the road from Kure beach is Historic Fort Fisher and the NC Aquarium. Adventure awaits at whichever direction you choose. Please note that this camp site has no septic, no electric. You can camp with an RV and a generator. There’s no dumpster. Please keep site clean. There is a Community dock nearby (in walking distance from the site) that takes you through a trail in the woods and all the way to a beautiful view of the river! Lake Waccamaw State Park is one of those places you go to just to look around. That’s not to say there aren’t activities to do here, but the nature and wildlife are so stunning that little else is going to be more exciting than simply taking in your surroundings. Lake Waccamaw is one of the most ecologically unique places in the world. Many endemic species of plants and animals call this, and only this place, home. Talk about spreading your wings, these guys haven’t left home for millions of years!

No trip to Lake Waccamaw is complete without checking out the Green Swamp, which contains a few of the area’s rarest plants and animals. When you’ve finally explored to your heart’s content, you can try your hand at fishing or grab yourself a campsite. You may not be one of the endemic species, but you can pretend for a night.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Lake Waccamaw State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer brings warmth perfect for water activities, though it can be crowded. Winters are quieter but cooler, so pack accordingly.

Lake Waccamaw Campground

BUGS. Stayed on a June 2015 motorcycle camping trip. If camping down by the water during the summer, bring clothes that cover every square inch of your body including a hat and head net. I had to keep all gear on (including helmet) in order to set up camp.
