13. Wheelers point resort

39mi from Big Bog State Recreation Area · 1 site
Nestled in the heart of Northern Minnesota, this campground offers a unique blend of rich history and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The Lake of the Woods region boasts a fascinating past that dates back to 1688 when Jacques De Noyon became the first European to witness its stunning waters. Archaeological evidence suggests that ancient peoples inhabited this area over 5,000 years ago, possibly even 10,000 years ago, following the retreat of glacial ice. After De Noyon's arrival, the next significant exploration of the Lake of the Woods occurred in 1732 when Pierre La Verendrye led a group of over 50 men into the region. At that time, northern Minnesota was home to various Indigenous tribes, including the Cree, Monsonis, Assiniboine, and Sioux. The Ojibwe had not yet ventured westward to Lake of the Woods. Unfortunately, La Verendrye's expedition faced tragedy when Father Aulneau and 19 others were killed by a Sioux war party on an island in the lake, an event that has led to the identification of two islands as Massacre Island, each claiming to be the site of this historical event. Overview

About

Often called Minnesota’s last true wilderness, Big Bog State Recreation Area is about as far north as you can get before you start saying “aboot.” The largest peat bog in the lower 48, it’s got sandy beaches, winterized cabins, and a mile long boardwalk perfect for taking in the native orchids and medicinal plants that sustained the Ojibwe Indians there for years. You’ll want to pack those bear bags, because Big Bog is known for its vibrant community of wildlife—frogs, turtles, bobcats, moose, and deer, to name a few. The upside to that? Nearby Upper Red Lake is chock-full of fish, making this spot perfect for amateur anglers to get in some reel time.

When to go

The best time to visit Big Bog State Recreation Area is during the warmer months, from late spring to early fall, when the trails are accessible and the wildlife is most active. Winter can be harsh, with heavy snowfall limiting access to certain areas, making it less ideal for visitors.

Know before you go

  • Check road conditions before your visit, as Highway 67 is permanently closed, affecting access to certain areas of the park.
  • Use updated GPS coordinates to navigate around the park, as some maps may still show the closed highway.
  • Prepare for remote conditions; cell service may be limited, so plan accordingly.
  • Respect the natural habitat by following Leave No Trace principles during your visit.
