Goldie is open for the summer! Goldie is an original early 1900's wooden caboose that ran on the DMIR railroad. She was re-designed in 1912 to be safer on the tracks (and her length extended so she wouldn't fall over). She ran the tracks of the Iron Range until retirement in 1968. She's been fully renovated with a few modern conveniences. We've re-used as much of the original wood as possible, and repurposed many things into other things so that we could keep the history alive. My husband is the carpenter that brought her to life and I'm the one that gave her some paint and design. Now, she's ready for people again, and to keep telling her story to others. Please...be our guest...and let Goldie be your host. The caboose sits about 50 yards from the house, but it tucked into the trees and feels very private. There is a private trail that leads from the caboose to the lake. Goldie has a max occupancy of 2 people due to space constraints. Please no pets since there are wooden floors. If you have a service dog, of course it is welcome - please reach out to me about that detail. She also offers: ~ 1 very generous bundle of firewood included with stay (extra may be purchased for $5) ~ Hot and cold running water ~ A shower ~A/C and heat ~Hot water kettle for coffee, tea and cocoa (or oatmeal, etc) ~Paper dishes, plastic utensils and ceramic mugs ~Microwave ~Mini fridge ~One queen sized memory foam bed ~ Bath Towels, hand towels and wash towels ~Flush Toilet ~Fire ring, picnic table and lake access (kayaks available to use for free) ~Wifi access ** There is no cable TV, but we have a DVD player and some movies to choose from. They are super friendly, but they will come to visit you at the lake. Our lake is an "environmental lake" so while we keep a small beach area that you are welcome to use, it is not free of lily pads or weeds. It's simple, but fully swimm-able (the Golden Retriever keeps the first 8 feet of water weed free with her swimming!). You are welcome to use the dock and chairs we keep there for breezy evenings or to take a dip to cool off. We are only 2i-sh miles from town with gas, food, ice cream, coffee shop, resaturants, small town shopping and a donut shop. There is a paved rail trail just down our street that runs both directions for many miles. Bikes are welcome! (please leave ATVs at home).

Enjoy the resident bald eagle pair nesting in the neighbor's pine, as well as a nearby beaver lodge and loon's nest. Much of the property to the west is bordered by state land, perfect for privacy, nature hikes, and hunting. The cabin features neutral colors, pine ceilings, minimal décor, excellent use of space, and abundant windows, so you can enjoy plenty of natural light and views of the surrounding woods. The great room includes comfortable leather furniture, a dining table, a 75-inch Smart TV with a PS4, and a cozy wood stove. The thoughtfully designed galley kitchen has all the essentials and a large pantry. There's also a breakfast nook and work area with an additional dining table and chairs. The main-level bedroom has a queen bed and plenty of closet space. The loft features two queen beds and one single bed. The bathroom includes a shower and a heater/exhaust fan. A washer and dryer are also provided. Other things to note: The lakeshore is beautiful, but it requires a short walk along the gravel road followed by a short hike down to the water, where you'll find metal chairs and a dock. The dock is very basic but functional, and a boat can be tied to it. Aquatic plants become more abundant in the water later in the summer. The dock is available from Memorial Day through Labor Day. We are continuing to improve the lakeshore by finishing steps down the slope and hope to add a longer dock in the future. Please reach out with any questions.

The property is within the Cuyuna mountain bike area, between the Yawkey and the Cruser's Kettle trailheads. There is a fire ring as well as a great deck upon which you can camp or otherwise relax and enjoy the view of the forested valley. The container is heated and cooled, and the container has a luxurious warm tiled shower, sink, toilet (cassette style), power and of course, as pictured, a beautiful small bedroom and living room. Coffee machine and mini fridge included on the deck. Note to guests, if the cassette toilet develops a smell, pour 16 oz of water into the urine catch once at a time a few times and it will purge the system and eliminate it. Such a beautiful hideout in the woods. Paul was a wonderful host from his house nearby. Beyond that, we were surrounded by beautiful woods, the lake, and the quiet. Within an hour of Bemidji and even closer to Itasca State Park. Would recommend to anyone!

Weekend Trip to Goldie The Caboose - Nevis MN

What a cool and unique experience Goldie was! We spent our 16th anniversary weekend here and took spent time relaxing by the fire, sitting by the lake, kayaking and taking in the local flavors of Nevis and Park Rapids. Amy was a great host and made sure we had everything we needed to a relaxing weekend away. Thank you Amy and Goldie, what an awesome weekend!

4 nights at Paul’s Lakeside Cottage

We adored our stay! Our highlights were cooking over the fire, wildlife watching (we saw a few loons, some frogs, a painted turtle, lots of fish, some deer and a beaver!). We loved the canoe — the lake is beautiful and serene. We even did a little fishing and caught 3 bluegill and cooked them up for dinner. Our senior pup, Hank, was also absolutely in heaven. We found the stay private, deeply connected to nature, comfortable, and romantic. If you’re looking for a place to unplug & recharge — this is a beautiful spot to do so!

5 nights at Goldie The Caboose - Nevis MN

Staying at Goldie the Caboose, was an absolute gift. The location is perfectly located on a clean, quiet lake and just off the Heartland Trail Bike/Walking path! Everything you would need was supplied without any of the distracting extras. It was like camping but with a/c and running water—basically perfect! I loved my time connecting with nature and escaping the hustle of everyday life. Amy and Chris were so kind and their pups made missing my dog at home much easier! I can’t wait to come back next summer!

3 nights at Goldie The Caboose - Nevis MN

We loved our time at Amy and Chris’s property! Amy gave us great local recommendations for our adventure and we really enjoyed exploring the area. Goldie the caboose is beautiful- truly an incredible labor of love. Flipping through the photo book detailing her restoration/ renovation was super cool. We were incredibly cozy (the morning thunderstorm we experienced was amazing) and we really appreciated all of the amenities. The fire pit was great and listening to the loon calls was magical. We also loved meeting all of the pets! I will definitely be recommending this place to friends and family. 🙂

This is a wonderful rustic cottage on a beautiful little lake. It isn't fancy, but it has. everything you need to enjoy Northern Minnesota-style lake life. There are plenty of trails to explore on the property, and a canoe is included with the rental. Paul is a great host, and is eager to help with any issues and to keep you hip to the local music scene (Revel Brewing rocks, BTW). This location is in the middle of so much to do and to experience. I hope to return someday.

We had such a good time staying at Goldie on Shallow Lake! The caboose is a gem and staying here allowed us to enjoy quiet evenings around the fire and the opportunity to kayak on the lake and explore the many towns and parks around Nevis. Amy and her husband were the most courteous and accommodating hosts. If you’re looking for an outdoorsy feel in a glamping fashion with some historic charm, look no further than Goldie the Caboose!

Paul was an excellent host. The cabin is secluded in his private property, except for his place which is separated by 300+ yards of woods. It's a quaint cottage with the comforts of home, situated Less than 100 yards from a pristine lake (also private). Enjoy a fire ring, canoes, and an occasional loon. Paul's right there if you need him along with trusty dog, Piper. A phenomenal getaway.

Paul was an amazing host—great communication throughout our visit and so warmly welcoming. He’s found a beautiful piece of the world and takes genuine joy in sharing it with others. The cabin was comfy and well-appointed, with everything we needed to make our meals and then relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We enjoyed canoeing from the dock just steps from the cabin, and also explored nearby Itasca State Park and the cute town of Nevis. Will definitely be back again!

A beautiful and secluded place to stay! We watched and listened to the loons from the dock as often as possible, launched the kayaks from the dock a very short walk from the cabin. I definitely recommend having your morning coffee (or tea) on the edge of the dock while listening to all of the nature, absolute best way to start a morning in my opinion. The bugs weren't bad at all either until we got to the other side of the lake

Had a wonderful weekend at Harvest Loon Camp. All of the amenities far exceeded expectations! The beds were comfortable, the cabin was air conditioned and the bathroom was newly renovated. Bonus points for being dog friendly! Robert was very responsive to questions throughout our trip. Highly recommend staying here - one of the best Hipcamp experiences we've had!
