The recreation opportunities in the Alturas CA area are endless, fishing, hiking biking, hunting, boating and OHV. The camping site has nearly 3 acres with a view of the town of Alturas and is a great place to kick back and enjoy the atmosphere of fresh air and juniper trees. There are flat usable campsites around the property and one portion of the property is fenced for horses (bring your own water trough). The property is approximately 3 minutes from downtown Alturas with restaurants and stores. The sleepy town is a perfect place to hang out and relax at the big park in town behind the VFW Hall on Main Street, have refreshments at the two bars in town or try your luck at the Desert Rose Casino. The Wildlife Refuge has a self driving tour where you can see all kinds of birds and wildlife. Take a drive outside town to the "Ranches" to see deer, antelope, eagles and various waterfowl! Alturas is a high desert area with wonderful views of the Warner Mountains and has an enchanting feel to it. Temperatures in the summer rarely get over 100 degrees, mostly low 90's, and in the fall the cool nights make for great sleeping. Pop over Cedar Pass to Cedarville which is about 20 minutes away to check out the newly designated "Dark Sky" area. Come up and hang out in this very cool and special place, you will not want to leave!! The town of Alturas is also in the coveted X hunting zones, X3a, X3b and X2, for those of you who like to hunt. Two sites have full hook ups and the small trailer site on the above pad (see trailer picture) has electric only. During the winter, the pump house is turned off and drained due to freezing temperatures and the risk of blowing a pipe, so campers must bring their own water during November through March. Please ask if there are changes in these dates for the water hook ups.

Junipers Reservoir RV Resort was created approximately 30 years ago. The RV resort sits at the end of a one mile gravel driveway, on the edge of a juniper forest overlooking the 200 acre Junipers Reservoir and its surrounding meadows. A large lawn and cedar buildings sit at the center of the oval shaped RV park, with the generously sized camping sites angled along the outside edge to provide the best views. The resort boasts free fishing in the reservoir for trout, hiking and biking trails, rock-hounding, bird watching, wildlife viewing, horseshoes, and volleyball. You will stay on the grounds of the beautiful Historic Crane Ranch, originally established in 1869. There are 325 acres to explore, including wetlands, willow forests, hay fields, creek and peat bogs. Wildlife such as deer, bear, beaver, porcupine, skunk, raccoon, fox, coyote, cougar and squirrels have all been seen on the property. And a rattlesnake was seen 18 years ago. And there are many feathered friends; it’s a bird watchers paradise.
There will be a variety of primitive camp sites in addition to the existing two sites close to the headquarters that have 20 amp power via extension cord. Fresh clean water is available from several faucets around the headquarters. Most campsites are sized to allow for group camping which makes this a perfect stop for adventure bikers touring the Oregon Outback or Burners to and from Black Rock City. There is a rustic but clean open air bathroom with flush toilet and a hot shower that is available to all guests in addition to a blue portapotty. Also a community gazebo that encloses a room with netting to keep mosquitos at bay. No outside fires are permitted at the campsites, however there is a community fire ring for a warming fire, pending local fire restrictions.
Located just 6 miles south of Lakeview, Oregon, our slice of paradise is only 145 miles (2.5 hours) from Black Rock City and 8 miles from the California border. This is an active ranch environment so at times there could be haying operations going on during the summer. The ranch borders rural Highway 395 and even though it’s usually pretty quiet and the camping is away from the highway, you can still hear it at times.
The wetland environment supports so many species, but it also supports mosquitos during the spring and early summer. Be prepared for mosquitos at all sites especially when camping in the willow forest during spring and early summer.
One pet is welcome at all sites and are required to be on leash around the headquarters. However, there is ample space for your pet to run off leash. Not responsible for any interactions between your dog and the wildlife such as skunks, porcupines, coyotes or other animals,

The ranch was easy to find and easy to access. All utilities were in great condition with no troubles. The host, another camper, and related friends were warm, welcoming, generous, and so much fun! Clear sunny mornings, quiet starry nights, and an alpaca and a donkey for company, it’s the perfect launch pad from which to work or explore. We’ll be back and bring more apples for the donkey.

It was so surprisingly quiet and we were the only ones there so it was awesome having the place to ourselves. We were having trouble with the sewer hookup but Hans came right over and fixed it. There was a block party going on near our spot so we checked that out and we had great burgers and it was awesome!

I found this place to be perfectly delightful! Rob has done an outstanding job to make it welcoming and convenient. This shower house is wonderful, the place is clean and orderly and it has a nice cat. This is a fine tent or camper van park. It is close to highway, but the traffic was infrequent so the noise did not bother me. Rob was responsive and attentive: overall an outstanding Hipcamp experience.

The property is easy to get to, a nice view up on the hillside, and a good level spot to camp on.

Excellent host and beautiful, private campsite. Flat with a picnic table, power, and water. Clean functional bathroom. Working wifi. About 8 miles into town if you forgot anything. Felt safe as a solo female camper. Will absolutely be back.

I absolutely loved camping on Robert's ranch. Hands down the best hip camp experience I've had! Robert is a very warm, welcoming, fun, kind, deep and all around awesome hospitable guy. The accommodations are great, ranch is very peaceful even has wifi and Robert hosts nightly happy hours. I highly recommend!

About
With 1,654,392 acres to explore, this national forest has something fun to do no matter how you define fun. Known for its distinctive landscape contrasts, this park spans mountains, meadows, lakes, soaring canyons, and mystical wetlands. It's the perfect place to go if you are looking to wander in some of California's most rural and striking wilderness.
Try to strike it lucky! You can pan for gold in the streams. Throughout the park, you'll find fire lookouts and ranger stations in remote areas. While hiking, you may come across wild horses. With a fishing license, you can cast your line in the many ponds and lakes.
Sleep at one of the primitive campsites available throughout the park. If you prefer a campground with varying amenities, this park has 22 different sites available.
The campgrounds are in four different ranger districts and don't require a reservation. You can bring your RV to many of these campgrounds but there aren't hookups available.

A.H. Hogue Campground
Scenery was absolutely STUNNING. The night sky was the most visible and beautiful I’ve ever seen. Check in was smooth and the general store was super useful for ice and the last minute things we forgot. The site itself was plenty big and set up nicely. Shaded structure and table was super thoughtful and enjoyed by all. Now to the negatives.. while the bathrooms in the front by the store were fine, the second set of bathrooms near our site were practically unusable. They were clogged the entire time and there was no toilet paper, so we had to walk up to the front each time, which can be hard with kids. Also, the place is INFESTED with mosquitos. We all have no less than 10-20 bites and they were literally flying all over us and our stuff the entire time, setting up, cooking, tearing down. It felt like we were breathing them. They covered the car to the point it looked polka dotted. We even killed a couple that made it into our car. Also, the quiet hours were not respected nor enforced, so while this may be a great spot for young fun party people, it was hard with kids and a baby who kept being woken up by people being loud, playing music, or shining light into our tent. Overall, if it was just my husband and I and I knew about the mosquito’s and could come prepared with a couple citronella candles, I’d probably stay again because it was just that beautiful, but it’s not really a proper spot to camp with kids or infants.

What a great Campground. We arrived in the middle of Labor Day Weekend and there were plenty of open spots. Almost all of the 47 spots are shaded. All have sturdy picnic tables and grills. There are spigots with potable water through out the campground. Deer ambled through the Campground at all hours of the day. Owls hooted all through the quiet and very dark nights. Great stargazing as light pollution is non existent here. The lake is beautiful with a nice walking path around the circumference. Fees were a very reasonable $14.00 per night. Loved it, we will be back

This place is amazing! It is a birding area with lovely forest and stone formations. We were the only ones at the site. We found a wild turkey's skeleton, hunted dragon flies and hiked around a bit. The only negatives were the highway- it is well traveled by big rigs- and gnarly bathrooms. However, it was a beautiful spot for a one night stay on our way up to Crescent Lake.

This dispersed campground is near an outcropping of obsidian called Rainbow Mine. Get yourself some dragon glass!

Modoc is home to Petroglyph Point , which is one of the coolest (and largest) pieces of Native American rock imagery in the US.

The temperature range is pretty intense here, 100 degrees in the summer and 35 below in the winter, so be prepared and definitely pack the right clothing.
