This 1.62-acre property is located about an hour south of the Oregon border and about 5 miles north of Alturas, California, in Modoc County. Located in the Modoc Recreational Estates, you will find a mix of open undeveloped land and scattered homes. This subdivision is surrounded by the Modoc National Forest and its millions of acres of undeveloped forest land for you to hike, fish, hunt, and explore. The terrain is partially flat with a slope on the back of the property, offering scattered trees and nice valley views. The property has a pleasant array of scattered pine trees mixed with natural open clearings. Proximity to town makes it very accessible and only a short trip from all your shopping, gas, and necessities. The surrounding area that makes up Modoc County is composed of plenty of open nature, beautiful pine forests, rivers, lakes, and streams. Located on a quiet dead-end street, you’ll enjoy total privacy with no through-traffic to interrupt your stargazing. Whether you’re watching the sunrise over the Modoc Plateau or tracking eagles soaring above, this is the perfect basecamp for high-desert adventure. • The Space: A spacious, secluded lot with natural sagebrush and juniper landscape. • The Location: Just a short drive from the fishing and birdwatching at Dorris Reservoir and the rugged trails of the Modoc National Forest. • Access: Easy access via CA-299 and US-395, making it a convenient stop for those traveling through the scenic northeast corner of the state. Guests will be welcome to enjoy a private campfire under the stars, though they will need to create their own fire area as no pre-built pit is provided. We will ask that fires be built only on bare mineral soil, positioned at least 15 feet away from tall grass or overhanging branches for safety. While guests are encouraged to use loose stones found on-site to ring their fire, we will require that all stone rings be dismantled and all ashes be cold to the touch before departure. Finally, it will be the responsibility of the guest to verify and adhere to any local county burn bans that may be in effect during their stay. *Bring all your own materials (picnic table, campfire material, etc)

Camp High Desert Vista

I’ve stayed at a lot of Hipcamps, and this one is special. Total silence except for the wind and the birds. The host has done a great job of keeping the site feeling wild and 'off-grid' while still making it easy to find. I brought my dog and he loved having the space to explore. If you’re looking to actually get away from people and just sit by a fire in peace, this is the spot. I'm honestly hesitant to leave a review because I want to keep this place a secret for my next solo trip!

We usually stay at the big state parks, but we were tired of being 10 feet away from our neighbors. This site was a breath of fresh air. It was spotless when we arrived. No trash, no leftover ash in the pit, just pristine woods. For the price, you get way more privacy and a much better view than any crowded campground.

The ideal spot for a weekend escape

You'll notice immediately that the light pollution is minimal, so the stargazing will be absolutely top-tier from your tent door. The ground is level enough in several spots that finding a flat pitch for a tent or a small rig won't be a struggle at all. You're going to love the way the morning mist sits over the land before the sun burns it off. It’s the kind of place where you’ll actually hear the wind in the trees instead of highway traffic. If you're looking for a spot that feels 'deep' in nature but is still manageable to get to, this is going to be your go-to weekend escape
