Our property is 85 very private acres with an open field surrounded by forest and open wooded area with many trails. The forest is very diverse including some old growth maples and birches, as well as hemlock and pine trees. The campsites are at the edge of the field set back into the woods. I have recently added sand and gravel to improve drainage since the heavy rain we have had last year. We have a portable composting toilet outhouse and a hot outdoor shower. Feel free to explore all of the trails on foot or mountain bike. You may see some turkeys or deer out there. There is a small pond with lots of frogs and salamanders near the camping area, and a few seasonal streams on the property. You can hike a one mile loop on our newest trail. It is medium difficulty because of the hillside it is built on so hiking boots are recommended unless you are on a mountain bike. Rock walls built in the mid 1800s circle the property almost entirely so the borders are easy to see. The Deerfield river is a few miles away where you can fish for trout or go for a swim or kayak. The Connecticut river and the green river are about 15 minutes away as well. We have tubes, a canoe, and a kayak that are available to rent for some floating! Historic Deerfield village and Yankee Candle store and factory are about 10 minutes away. We are about 20 minutes from Northampton and Amherst.Choose between camping in one of the wooded nooks at the edge of our grassy field. A stone fire pit is located at each site. We have plenty of firewood for campers so no need to bring any. Our composting toilet is available as well as our outdoor hot shower. Listen to owls and frogs serenade you to sleep! You might see a family of deer at dawn or dusk and you will definitely hear lots of birds. Bring your mountain bike or hiking boots and you can explore over a mile of trails on our property and easily get to the Deerfield river using the two mile long Mahican-Mohawk trail which leads to Conway Station where two rivers meet and you can see the ruins of a trolley bridge. The street we are on was recently designated part of the Franklin County scenic bikeway which takes you along the Connecticut river valley and many points of interest. We are a 10 minute to Treehouse brewery, Berkshire brewing company, historic Deerfield, yankee candle and mount sugarloaf reservation. We are 15 minutes from the Franklin county fairgrounds and Camp Keewanee.

  • Review summary

    Generated from real Hipcamper reviews

Camping at Willis's site offers a serene experience surrounded by nature, with many appreciating the quiet, private setting and the convenience of amenities like a fire pit and outdoor shower. It's a great spot for those looking to explore nearby attractions like Treehouse Brewery. However, the composting toilet has received significant negative feedback, with some finding it uncomfortable and in need of improvement. Despite this, many guests highlight Willis's friendliness and the overall peaceful atmosphere as strong positives.

Great place. This was my second trip there, and I would definitely go again.

    It was okay

We definitely had mixed feelings about this site after our group of 8 stayed for 3 nights. Willis and his sons were very friendly and communicative and their property was beautiful. Despite the proximity to the house the site felt private. The location is great (Treehouse brewery!) But... the composting toilet situation was very bad. Other reviews touched on this a bit, but we didn't heed the warning, so I am going to describe it in greater detail. For a site that can accommodate 24 adults, we expected a permanent setup with a remote chamber for the composting. Instead there was a claustrophobic homemade structure sitting on top of a trailer. To sit on the toilet you need to awkwardly turn yourself sideways in the corner with your feet propped up uncomfortably on a weird platform. The toilet seat was connected to a sideways 55 gallon poly drum with a hole ripped in the side. Urine is collected separately using a cut-in-half plastic milk jug positioned toward the front of the seat, connected to a smaller drum with a piece of pipe that is easy to detach by accident with your foot when getting into position. The biggest problem was that we arrived to find waste just a few inches below the seat which was a real shock. Willis punched the waste down to make a little more space, and we survived, but it was definitely not pleasant and many in our group refused to use it. I have used all manner of pit toilet and latrine in my life, this was by far the worst.
