Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers. Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 150+ foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Freckled throughout the hillsides are thousands of humongous granite boulders, offering a prehistoric feel to the landscape. Above all, Splitrock offers unrivaled views. Over 40 miles of coastline includes views to Point Loma, the Carlsbad power station, and the Pendleton Hospital. To the northeast are views of near 11K foot snowy peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, with rolling hills of De Luz and Fallbrook in the foreground.

The Oak Grove Communal Camping

Oak Grove had plenty of trees to help with decreasing heat. There were many hiking trails. The goats roamed freely which was really great. The bathrooms were clean. Beautiful views. We enjoyed our stay very much. The showers were cold and despite notifying the staff, they never got that repaired.

The Oak Grove Communal Camping

I rented the small vintage trailer and it's great! Water is by a hand pump, the stovetop is handy and the bed is very comfortable. The area is beautiful and my pup is loving it. Keep an eye out for coyotes if you have pets.

Loved this spot. Very small but private and perfect for a solo camper, felt very safe. There's a spot for your car or even another tent across from the spot. Goats wandered around each day super friendly and I got visited by their dog as well. Ants were so bad in this area so beware😭 but comes with nature. Absolutely recommend

Fun and Unique Camping Spot

Redtail Rock

Fun spot to camp! Our group had a mix of tents and trailers and our spot (Redtail Rock) was great for both. Lots of fun rocks for the kids to climb on, a picnic table and potable water on site, and a short 1 minute walk to the closest bathroom. About 15 minutes away is the Santa Margarita County Preserve with some freshwater spots to swim in. (don't go to the river trail preserve if you want to go in the water; no swimming allowed there). The host was also super responsive and helpful. The only complaint was the ants! They got into everything (including our tent) and that was a pain. Not sure if that was just our site or if other sites have the same problem. It didn't ruin the trip for us, but it was enough of a problem that I don't know if we would come back to this spot.

This is our second time to Splitrock, and really enjoyed it. The Airstream was well stocked with cookware, helping to make it a worry-free trip.

This campsite exceeded expectations — it looked exactly like the photos, no surprises or letdowns. The animal encounter was a highlight of the whole trip, such a special experience to have so close to nature. And the views? Honestly some of the best I’ve ever seen from a campsite. Would absolutely come back!

This site was absolutely fantastic! I brought my son and three of his friends for his 14th birthday, and they had a blast! They got to explore while I cooked dinner and did things around camp and we were far enough away from everyone that I didn’t have to worry about them driving people mad with boys being boys things. Being down in the trees was amazing because it kept camp so much cooler and offered places to hang lights and such. We will definitely be back and I have already recommended the spot to several friends. Thank you so much for the amazing space!

The Oak Grove Communal Camping

The location of Splitrock is beautiful. We enjoyed the Oak Grove camping area and appreciated that tent sites were spread out. However, we were dissatisfied with the maintenance of the property. A big reason we chose to camp here is because of the hot showers, but we tried three shower locations at different camping areas, and none were working: the water heaters were broken at 2, and the third shower was out of order. We ended up taking a cold shower. We notified the maintenance personnel, and they replaced the batteries at one of the shower locations, but the showers at Oak Grove were still cold the next day. While we enjoyed the location, solitude, and nature, we feel the upkeep of this campground needs improvement to meet the standards that are advertised.

The Oak Grove Communal Camping

We had an amazing stay at this campground! The site was incredibly clean and well maintained. The bathrooms and showers were spotless, which made our stay even more comfortable. We loved having access to water and the beautiful views throughout the campground. One of the highlights was seeing the friendly farm animals, which was a big hit for both kids and adults. There were plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained, making it easy to stay busy or simply relax and enjoy the surroundings. Overall, this is one of the nicest campgrounds we’ve visited, and we can’t wait to come back!

The Oak Grove Communal Camping

My husband, dog and I had a peaceful weekend camping here! The land is absolutely beautiful and well taken care of. We picked a site last minute so we stayed in the communal area. There was still a generous space between sites and other campers were respectful of everyone’s peace. The nights were noisy due to wild life and guardian dogs working (which makes sense but would bring ear plugs next time). Definitely will be back with our son next time and try one of the more private sites!

Peace Rock

Had a good time. We had a private animal encounter for an hour. Got to feed goats, alpaca, and pig. Also got the 20ft tent with 4 cots with plenty of extra space. Everything was set up beforehand. Shower is onsite with faucet. Bathroom is a 2-3 minute walk. Sometimes the restrooms/sink don't work. They're pretty clean for the most part. Other campsites are close to you, but you don't really hear them. Observation deck is less than a 10 minute walk. 5k hike was mainly uphill/downhill and views were alright. Went during June 2026, and the weather was amazing.

nice location with great views however, the grill on site was not functional, rusty, and not safe to cook on. host provided a small griddle as a replacement but severely impacted meal plans for the trip. hope this issue is resolved for future guests so they are not disappointed as my group was. i would encourage guests to verify with host if grill is clean and functional prior to arrival.

Cool spot but not for stargazing

Granite Tabernacle Private Views

It was a really cool spot. I love the fire pit inside the Tabernacle. However I chose this spot to specifically see the Stars and the terrain blocks good portion of what I was trying to see in the Western sky. My bad, should have picked horizons for that. Also I chose it for seclusion but it was within sight and hearing distance of car camper which had bright lights. Finally. My little dog got stung by a scorpion so we had to rush off to an ER that was 45 minutes away ( she's ok). Nobody's fault but def put a damper on the evening and made me worried about the dogs the whole rest of the trip.

Rock Bottom w/ a View from the Top

Overall, we had a pleasant stay at Split Rock Farm and Retreat. The campsite was peaceful and the surroundings were beautiful. However, I’m giving 4 stars because none of the water spigots around the campground were working during our visit. We had to walk to the water source near the camp shop every time we needed water, which was quite inconvenient, especially for cooking and cleaning at camp.

Hilltop Hideout

Beautiful and well laid out campground. There is signage throughout and we had no trouble finding camp. Views were great especially in the morning when the marine layer is rolling out. We came in June and the weather was perfect with no biting insects. The animal encounter was charming and fun and well worth the price. Will definitely come back.

Great site. Room for improvement

Sunset Oaks VW Bus

Property is extremely pretty. Can’t stress that enough. Also felt secluded despite the amount of sites in the area. The downsides were unfortunately a little blaring. The bus had a mouse and ant problem. Which we could get past. What we couldn’t get past was an incident with a rattlesnake in our site. I understand wildlife is everywhere. So we ended up moving it ourselves with a few sticks. But we were scared it would either come back or go to other neighboring sites. We texted our camp host to get help moving it further. We didn’t get a reply for hours and when we finally did, they promised to send help that just never came. Communication really needs improvement.

The Oak Grove Communal Camping

We loved this campsite! I truly wish we had planned for more than 2 nights here during our trip. My 7 year old fully agreed, saying it was the one spot on our trip (that included Disney) that he would have liked more time. The views were breathtaking, and the wandering goat herd was so much fun. The outdoor shower was great, but be sure to bring a towel to stand on or some sort of shower shoes. The base is a rock thats a bit rough to bare feet (but great for being non-slip).

Another relaxing stay

Airstream Luna at Cloudcrest

The Cloudcrest site and vintage airstream stay was fabulous. The site has lovely views and lots of space. The trailer itself had everything we needed. My 6'2" partner had no trouble sleeping in the full size bed so that was great. The front porch was such a relaxing spot to hang out with a book and a glass of wine. The only real issue we had was ants. It was got and those guys were looking for water. VERY common! The camp host placed an ant trap in a cabinet and that eventually helped, but seeing dead ants one the shelf was not fun. We just closed the cabinet door and kept going. We were fine with it as we prefer that over spraying chemicals in the air. I have stayed at Splitrock 3 or 4 times in the past and just love it. GREAT outdoor(ish) showers, bathrooms and lots of water. There are goats roaming the property and a fabulous viewing deck above the clouds. Nice hiking trails and GLORIOUS sunrises and sunsets!!
