The best camping near McCroskey State Park guide

Overview

About

McCroskey Park, known in the longhand as Mary Minerva McCroskey State Park, was dedicated in the 1950's to the hard-scrabble women of the pioneer days. Don your bonnet and live out your Little House on the Prairie fantasies here, where horseback riding and wildflower viewing are complimented by reading a hardback by the crackling fire. The 18-mile long Skyline Drive gives a window into some of the prairie's beautiful vistas and is the perfect spot to bring your mountain bike for a spin. Whether you're there to catch sight of some wild moose and black bear, or just to smell the sweet, fresh air, you'll feel like a pioneer after your stay, guaranteed.

Notable campgrounds

  • Fireplace Campground: Cozy up by the fire rings at this campground surrounded by dense cedar forests.
  • Mission Mountain Campground: Wake up to breathtaking views and easy access to potable water and scenic trails.
  • Redtail Campground: Ideal for nature lovers, this site offers a serene setting and vault toilets for a comfortable stay.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early to secure your spot, as campgrounds fill up quickly during peak seasons.
  • Consider visiting during the weekdays for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Check for cancellations regularly, as plans change and spots may open up.
  • Explore nearby camping options if McCroskey State Park is fully booked.

When to go

The best time to visit McCroskey State Park is from late spring to early fall when the weather is mild and all facilities are operational. Winter months can be challenging due to snowed-in roads and limited access.

Know before you go

  • Remember to pack out your trash, as there is no garbage service in the park.
  • Running water is only available seasonally, so plan accordingly.
  • Some roads are gravel and may not be suitable for very wide or long vehicles.
  • Trail etiquette is important; share the space with bikers, hikers, and horseback riders.
  • For current conditions and park updates, contact the park office from 8:30am to 5pm.
