Weekend Trip to Thunder BRidge

Butterfly 1 was the perfect spot for our family! Our girls loved having easy walking access to the river. The firepit was perfect set up for s’mores. It was great to have the seating area by the firepit and inside the shelter. The spot was private and quiet with easy access to nearby gas station for essentials we forgot. We will definitely keep this spot in mind for future adventures!

Weekend Trip to Hawthorn Hollar

We loved our time there. So much space and secluded little cabin to ourselves. Very peaceful!! We had a blast fishing in the lake. Highly recommend!!

3 nights at Shenandoah Retreat by Hazard Mill

This spot really exceeded expectations! Thought it’d be musty and dark with lumpy beds and a smelly outhouse, which would have been fine. The hazard is bright and airy with a very pleasant fresh smell (not a covering gross perfume). The beds were comfy and the outhouse was for what it is great. Lots of flat soft ground for tents or games. River access was easy. We did 17 miles from here to front royal boat ramp in six hours first day. River was high. Gorgeous trip but no rapids to speak of. Did 10 miles second day from seekford. Great class two at mile one, lots of class 1s and ripples after. Shuttle is a bit of a bear for that at 45 minutes each way.

This camp is peacefully situated in a beautiful forest with a clean creek running through the back end of the campground. With lots of large, spread out camp sites you will have lots of privacy to relax. Nice park model screen cabins with cots to sleep on and a table. Large fire pits and our space also had a fire pit grill. We will definitely be returning!

This spot was lovely to say the least. It’s in a quiet tucked away spot, I felt like I had enough privacy but took comfort in knowing the hosts live close by on the property in case of emergency. They provided some water, firewood optional, a camping stove, lanterns and a few other small items that made a difference. My dog and I loved the pond that was just a short walk from the site. The dog who lives on the property was my dog’s little pal for the time we were there. Everything was clean by camping standards. I got to truly relax here and it felt safe. I would recommend this spot to anyone looking to unwind in a very aesthetically pleasing setting. I would love to visit again sometime!

This place was perfect. Just the two of us and the dog. It was exactly what we were looking for - secluded, river front. There’s a ton of room on the lot to spread out and enjoy nature, soak up some sun, hitting some catfish. Host was very responsive and helpful. We definitely plan to return!

Cabin camping at this little slice of heaven was everything I was looking for. Everyone working there and staying there were all kind and down to earth. They are pet friendly, reasonably priced, and just good people... What more could you ask for? The property is huge with lots of options for adventure (kayaking, tubing, and canoeing) as well as some hiking paths. The pups and I will most certainly be back!

Had a wonderful weekend with the family and dogs here. There were plenty of trails to walk (the gnome trail was a highlight) that are well-maintained. The pond on site was perfect for easy fishing with an option to take out the canoe. And Moon and Julie were both such friendly and generous hosts! The cabin is placed on a spacious plot of land away from the other two sites, with plenty of shade. The futon was surprisingly comfortable. Lots of open fields too. In short, it was the perfect getaway.

We loved staying at Butterfly 1 in the screened in cabins. We loved going to sleep to the sound of the creek near by and the place is just beautiful. The beds are really comfortable too. We have access to a composting toilet close by and if we needed there are toilets and hot showers at the pavilion. Our girls had the best time making friends with other kids around the camp ground and it was a very friendly vibe. Highly recommend this place especially if you want to hike Devil’s Marbleyard which we did 2 days in a row… :) Thanks Adam for being a great host ! We will be back .

The entire place is fantastic! The sites are all well maintained, wooded, and close to the creek. We stayed in Butterfly 1 (screened in cabin) and we absolutely loved it. Great swimming holes nearby (5-10 minute car ride) and the creek that runs through camp is refreshing. The pavilion has a ping pong table, horse shoes, and cornhole. The bathrooms are nice and clean. Spoke to one of the owners and he was very kind and took his time to tell us about the history of the land. We will 100% be back.

I had a lovely time staying here at the Woodpecker 1 site. The site is a very close walk to the Pavillion which has showers, toilets and electricity. It still felt very secluded with beautiful trails and scenery. I took my doggo and we had the best time. The beds were comfy, just bring your own linens and blankets. A couple of convenience stores nearby, one is on the road to the campground, maybe 5 mins (or less) away, that has just about anything you could need. Adam was a fantastic host, communicative, helpful and quick to respond. There are great hikes nearby, for experienced or beginners. I would 100% stay here again.

This is as an awesome little cabin that gave the feel of sleeping outdoors with the comfort of a comfortable bed! It was not as secluded as expected, but still a beautiful property!

2 nights at FoxDen by Heartwood Farm and Cabins

What a lovely retreat! A comfy & cozy stay tucked in the woods, surrounded by ferns and trees. Silas the canine camp host was a highlight…he played so respectfully with our old dog, we were shocked to see her running around with him and playing “tag!” The pond was great, and we look forward to coming back and exploring the trails! Our campsite was an easy walk to the pond and gathering areas, yet still felt completely private. FYI, the path down to the cabin is a little steep if you need to be mindful of how heavy your cooler is when you pack it. We highly recommend the fox den!

Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays.

Lightwood Forest

Lightwood Forest is an ancient forest of mixed beech, oak, poplar, and other hardwoods in rural Surry County, Virginia, and is some of the earliest settled land in English North America. The stream that runs through Lightwood Forest was the original southern border of the land given by Chief Powhatan to his daughter Pocahontas, and her husband John Rolfe, as a wedding gift. Their son Thomas's house was somewhere on the property or in a neighboring field. The forest is magnificent, and is an example of a rapidly dwindling ecosystem in Tidewater Virginia. There are many possible camping sites on the 110 acres. On the property stands Lightwood House, the 18th-century home of a Revolutionary War soldier and his family. The house is available for overnight stays, or as a central meeting place for campers and guests. The property is only rented to one party at a time, with exclusive use of the entire estate. The house can be viewed as a sort of time machine, but with all modern comforts and necessities. Lightwood provides lovers of history and nature the opportunity to enjoy both--either as campers or house guests. This unique house and property offers visitors a rare opportunity to escape the twenty-first century and venture into a haven of peace, quiet and solitude. Learn more about this land: Within the expansive and protected boundaries of Lightwood Forest, many delightful and secluded camping sites can be found. Ginkgo Ridge

With views over the ocean of trees and town below, we offer three private and very comfy Glamping Cabins. Each of them provides a terrific place to experience the outdoors in comfort. We make it easy and fun to experience nature. Here, you can enjoy the breathtaking vistas, watch the spectacular sunsets, chase fireflies, make a campfire, search for the Milky Way, and then sleep easy in your own queen-sized bed on this historic property. The two original, off-grid, Jefferson Sea Cabins are perched on the eastern side of Ginkgo Ridge, And the newest, the Boxwood Overlook, sits on top of the ridge and includes electricity, AC, heat and lights. Ginkgo Ridge sits on the eastern side of the Southwest Mountains, which is the first mountain range west of the Atlantic. The views are big and far. Some say you can even see Portugal! Wildlife, including eagles, hawks, turkey, fox, rabbit, deer, fireflies and more are abundant on the 66-acre property. If you are interested in history, ask John. He will tell you about the Civil War battle fought here and the tobacco baron who once owned the estate. Two of our cabins are off grid — no electric and no plumbing but with alternative water and light. The third and newest enjoys electric. While there is no "running" water, we bring you fresh spring water. And while there is no electric in 2 cabins we make up for it with solar and battery lights and fans. We also offer a propane heater in all 3 to keep you toasty in cooler weather. Both off-grid cabins are equipped with a comfy, luxury queen-sized bed and box spring with fresh linens and plenty of pillows, a chair, and tables. The cabins are approximately 12x14 of interior living space plus a semi covered 16’ x 8’ deck with chairs and table. The original cabin is slightly smaller interior than the lower cabin. The newest third cabin is called the Boxwood Overlook Cabin, because it is surrounded by huge boxwoods and overlooks the entire property. It sits where the original main house was located, but burned down in the 1920's. It is more luxurious that the other 2. It's 12x20, includes an organic queen bed, refrigerator, reclining chairs, interior and exterior lights. And you can drive right to the front door. Each cabin gets a propane heater which keeps you toasty even on the coldest winter nights. In warmer months, the 2 off-grid cabins have battery-powered fans with plenty of industrial batteries. They also enjoys plenty of solar powered torch lamps which offer a terrific ambiance. We do recommend you bring flashlights and or headlamps. If you forget, no worries, we got you covered. The Boxwood Overlook cabin has electricity with interior and exterior lights, refrigerator and AC in the summer. All the cabins enjoy 5-gallon containers of fresh spring water and their own private Loo House/bathroom. The Loo Houses or bathrooms are semi open air. They have roofs, a solar bag shower, and bedside commodes with large, disposable, biodegradable bag inside with special sand that solidifies your waste. You dispose of the bag at a nearby trash box off property, just like a diaper. Extra bags are available. Each cabin has its own fire pit and grill with everything you need to make a fire, including split wood, kindling, newspaper and lighter. Firewood is $7.50 per crate. And if you need help starting your fire, no worries, John will help you. The "Jefferson Sea" is a description many attribute to the nation's 4th President, Thomas Jefferson, who enjoyed the same ocean-like view (but better) of fields and trees below his home at Monticello, that is located 15 miles down the road. Enjoy giant Ginkgo trees (especially in the Fall), boxwood gardens, colossal Tulip Poplars, and Osage Orange trees, and wild organic raspberries in July. We support BIPOC and all are welcome to enjoy our property :) There is a 2-night minimum on weekends. Just down the hill is the historic town of Gordonsville with perhaps the best BBQ on the east coast, wine tasting room, two breweries, several cafes and restaurants, grocery store and liquor store. Within minutes are Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, James Madison’s Montpelier and some of the nation’s finest vineyards, including Barboursville Vineyard and many others. The Blue Ridge Mountains, Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, the University of Virginia and downtown Charlottesville are within 30 minutes. It’s just an hour to Richmond or Harrisonburg and less than two to Washington, DC, or 3 to We are very COVID-conscious! Sorry folks, due to damage and recent zoning laws, our cabin is closed indefinitely. Our dream was to own a log cabin on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. Sixteen years ago we accomplished that dream, giving us access to a Shenandoah Valley treasure, and yes, we are on the first of the Seven Bends. Although we live in the main log cabin, we are happy to share our tiny living screened cabin over looking the river with many activities available to you. Although we are only minutes from I81, the setting is very private, in the woods behind our home. Park at the main cabin and hike 200 feet down the hill to the secluded River Cabin overlooking the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. You'll have river access for fishing, swimming and paddling (kayaks and canoes provided), or you can just sit on the dock and watch the sunset. Retreat back into the screened cottage for a quiet restful evening or relax on the deck by a fire. We are a Glamping site... like a hotel stay in the woods. Close by are 100's of miles of hiking trails and the charming town of Woodstock,
