Once owned by Boise Cascade who used it both for growing seedlings to replant logged mountain sides and as a vacation getaway for their executives, the story of Katydid Ranch goes back to the early 1900's when it's owner named "Katy" used it as the "half-way" overnight lodging for horse & buggy guests traveling to Crater Lake from the Rogue Valley. Leaving the valley at the crack of dawn, they could arrive at "Katy's" by nightfall, in time for a meal and sound mountain sleep. They'd hitch up at dawn and make it to Crater Lake by nightfall. Historically, the first residents were the Rogue River Takelma and Latgawa native Americans. Latgawa lived in the Rogue Valley of interior southwest Oregon. In their own language "Latgawa" means "those living in the “uplands," though they were also known as the Walumskni by the neighboring Klamath tribes. Specifically, Ha-ne-sakh. The Latgawa were one of two peoples who spoke the Takelma language. They were hunters, gatherers, weavers and fished the Rogue River. They were known to have a stationary settlement and trading post at the Katydid Ranch location. Their tribes lived in the upper Rogue River area extending beyond Prospect and Union up to Crater Lake. Since we've owned the Ranch, we've maintained the custom of welcoming overnight guests and at the same time, we continue to honor the protected wildlife designation given to it back in the 50's. Wildlife viewing is one the delights we share with our guests. Please be mindful of native wildlife keeping dogs on leash so as to avoid chasing and barking at wildlife. Thank you. The animals here include, but are not limited to black tail deer, elk, fox, coyote, ringtailed cat, raccoon, skunk, and also typically farther up the mountain are the elusive mountain lions and black bear which we have never spotted on our property. Our pond bird watcher friends spotted Common Mergansers, Ring Necked Ducks, Canada Geese…and a Loon. The bull frogs orchestrate the evening and can be heard at times throughout the day. If you book a month out don't be surprised if we have added an outdoor kitchen. Our real toilet outhouses have been added to 3 of our sites. So much cool stuff to do on a really magical property. We want to share so come enjoy. Not one of our campsites are in view or proximity to the others. Very private and lots of solitude. We (as hosts) can be as present or invisible as you like. Access to miles of trails and roads on BLM/Forest Service land for hiking, ATV's, motorcycles and off-roading. Please know to explore responsibly and at your own risk to preserve the land and keep yourself safe. You are also welcome to explore the property with the exception of one space on the upper portion where the owners reside. Views are beyond and nothing man made that is not on the property is visible from the property with the exception of one little red light on a US Cellular tower across the valley. We currently do not provide electricity at the sites but it is in the works. We have both available a short walk from the camp site in a common area. The power is limited to charging tech, some laptop time and the like, It wont run a hairdryer, etc. The WiFi is common use and has the ability to download and make WiFi calls. No guarantee of its suitability for any particular purpose, it will depend on usage in the moment. There is little to no reception up here so please plan ahead. US cellular has property and valley wide reception but that is the only one. Verizon can send texts and messages but is painfully slow or non-existent on internet. Also has voice calls occasionally but don't count on it. All the other cell services we do not know about. If you would like to spend a week or more here and would like a better power/internet solution then let us know. We can set it up for specific needs. Good if you wish to be in an amazing space to work remote or write. We are adding decks for lounging and views, a solar and wood heated community Jacuzzi for our guests and an outdoor shower tub as we speak and will add pictures as the projects are completed. We welcome ATV's, side by sides, 4x4's, snowmobiles and other such fun rec stuff but will require you to ride/drive on the bazillion acres of BLM land. It is on two sides of the property and a short distance. Riding on and off the property is limited to 10 mph to limit dust and noise and safety for everyone on the property. Please let us know if you plan on bringing any toys so we can notify the others on the property and send additional info, rules and such. There are several wineries on the road between us and Ashland. If you get drunk please arrange a ride or contact us for help. We support not driving while under the influence and will support you. we also have several responsible persons that live on the property and can be hired to drive/guide you on tours. We are in the process of creating wine tours of the valley which will include a driver. We have several lakes within 10-30 minutes for boating, and other water sports. Rock climbing is also available with the local sport crag within 25 minutes, castle crags is about 2 hrs away and several other small crags and bouldering around the valley 30 min.-1.5 hrs. Instruction and guiding are available if you or your group would like to learn. Equipment provided. Inquire. We can provide certain camping amenities if you need them. Weekend Trip to Wild Hare Farms

Brad and Jen met us as we arrived and guided us to our spot, which is the middle of a grassy area just behind their home. Sitting between their lovely animals, we spent two nights recovering from a 5 week cross country and through Oregon (twice) and Washington state. It was quiet enough and they have a great picnic area to use. We are a 33’ fifth wheel and we brought some limbs down as we came into the property. If you are at or larger than 13’3” height, I would speak to either Brad or Jen first to ensure those have been cut back so you can get in and out with damaging your roof or destroying their lovely trees and shrubs. Thanks, guys! We had a great stay with you.

The sites are great. The amenities mostly okay. The showers are not private, however. They do not feel safe, as anyone can walk in. Some of the shower stalls have curtains, but there are no lockable doors. Another issue is that they don’t have what they advertise as EV charging. It is an outlet that you can plug a trickle charger into, and you would have to park your car next to the communal kitchen in the middle of a walkway for days to charge. This is impractical and a lie at worst, a lack of knowledge and false advertisement at best.. They do NOT have what they emailed me saying they do, which is a standalone EV charging station. Charge your car before you get there, because otherwise you could be stranded. When I approached the camp host about this issue during normal business hours, they appeared inebriated on something and had no idea what I was asking. There was no understanding whatsoever. I walked away having no solution. This to me is careless and unprofessional.

The space was gorgeous arriving after dark, (though make sure you bring enough lighting, the stairs can be a trip hazzard if youre not careful) and absolutely beautiful to explore in the morning. My pup loved the close creek access, the beautiful bridge, and the fun little nature trail. The facilities were clean and though I didnt have time to use the shower it was nice to have available! Private, safe, beautiful, and exactly the stop we needed on our drive north this year! We will be back! Thanks Marcus for being so responsive and helpful answering questions, the descriptions were thorough and helpful! My last piece of advice is just check for gravel in your tires as you leave, I had a little trouble with some extra sharp ones getting stuck on my way out.
