Pleasant Valley Farm was originally a working farm with a two-story farmhouse and traditional bank barn, built in the late 1800s. The massive timbers and joinery are constant reminders of the meticulous craftsmanship of the era. Jim and Kathy Grogg purchased Pleasant Valley Farm in 1994 and not only updated the house and barn, but also expanded the lake to its current 13 acres. The large 144-year-old, 2736-square-foot barn is now available for special occasions such as weddings, receptions, birthdays, and reunions.

Come stay at our little sustainable farmstead amid the beautiful rolling hills of southern Ohio!
Our peaceful 20 acres has a good mix of woods, wild meadows and maintained cleared areas as well as a small pond, all of which can be explored via our nature trail. Enjoy the sounds of nature and an incredible night sky.
FIREWOOD and seasonal farm goods are available for purchase at a self-serve stand (several payment options available). There is also a wonderful sauna on the property that can be reserved (go to sauna to reserve a time).
Great hiking, kayaking, biking, birding, fishing, swimming, and disc-golfing opportunities just a few miles away at Paint Creek State Park and the Highland Nature Sanctuary. Amish country is also just 15 minutes away with a great bakery, markets and greenhouses. This area is home to an impressive network of ancient earthworks including the world famous Serpent Mound.
Our accommodations range from primitive tent-camping to "glamping" in one of our tiny off-grid cabins. The sites are spaced out for privacy and each site offers a private picnic table and fire pit. There are two shared privies/outhouses which have basic composting toilets (not flushing). A grassy parking area is provided near the road, however, ALL SITES ARE WALK-IN (with the exception of site #1).
***Please take note that this is private property and the host lives on site. If you are looking for a place to be loud and party into the night, this is not the place for you. If you are looking to spend some quality time in nature, welcome. There are rules.
*** The gazebo kitchen is NOT COMMUNAL as it is connected to the Fern Cabin (Fern cabin guests have exclusive access to the kitchen). The kitchen IS included for those who book "The Whole Darn Place".

We bought this 125+ year old farm in 2010 with the hope of bringing it back to life. Overgrown and neglected, we have worked hard to make it a nice place for hiking, kayaking, fishing or any number of other activities. Peaceful and remote, the property has a beautiful brook that leads you to the South branch of the Portage river. Deer, turkey, geese, herons, mink and fox are just a few of our natural animal friends. Rusty the steer and his pony friends Lexi and Little Bits can be visited while they graze in the pasture. There are chickens and Brindle the barn kitty. We have the perfect place for dogs as well. We have four dogs that get along great with others and our fenced pond keeps them safe. We allow kayaking in the pond when our dogs are inside. But fishing has been restricted due to unfortunate incidents.

The road that this camp was on had to be raised when they put the dam in, they even had to move the one room school house! Black Hand Gorge preserve isn't far from the camp, lots of hiking and bicycle trails. Dillon State Park is 10-15 miles away with trails for horses, walking and biking. I recommend Fruitdale Farm in bainbridge for a really wonderful easy getaway.
The highlight of the trip was escaping the heat with our feet in the water getting our toes nibbled at the dock. The boys wanted a dip before we headed out… their favorite spot. we headed to the pond this morning with handmade soap from the farm. Going back this fall when it’s not the hottest day of the year. Thank you for creating this wonderful oasis. We’ve been singing your praises.

The campsite has all of the amenities you could want and more! Flat, cleared grass area for a tent, a covered shelter with grilling tools, an awesome tripod with grill grate. The creek was a great entertainment for my daughter and me. The only downside was some road traffic but that dissipated at night. We did enjoy hearing the horse and buggies clop by though. Be prepared for mosquitoes but to be expected when camping. We would return.

Chad & Elizabeth were so accommodating and easy to book with. I was there on a particularly hot day and Chad & Elizabeth checked in on me (via message) to make sure I had plenty of water. So thoughtful. I was there for some solitude to get some work done and Chad & Elizabeth respected my request. Beyond that, the site is phenomenal. So peaceful, excellent views, and great hosts! My stay in the Sugar Shack at Fruitdale was magical and transformative. I loved everything about it. Aimee has created a beautiful, idyllic farm, gardens, and sanctuary, everything was just as described, and I couldn’t have had a better time. I especially loved being visited by Tangy, the cat, sitting by the pond, and exploring local hiking trails. The Farm Stand is great, too, and next time, I’ll get my produce there! Thank you for your hard work, hospitality, and careful stewardship of the land. Will definitely return and recommend to others.

This was my second time camping at this HipCamp. Last was for one day last September, and this time was for two days. That should be a good indicator that it was worth a repeat visit! The little picnic bench shelter (maybe 12x12?) was super handy for the 45 minutes of rain I had on the 2nd day. I timed the walk from my car to the camp, annd the trail only takes 90 seconds. And the utility cart for hauling equipment? Such a smart idea. I don’t camp lightly, and it only took two trips with the cart. I could see it taking a good 8-9 trips without the cart. Only negative is there is some road noise, but it dies down significantly overnight. My Apple Watch gave me a 93 sleep score, which is pretty good for sleeping on the ground. :)

Cant say enough good things about the host, location and site. These spots are well spaced adjacent to the creek and about as private as you can get. I was fortunate to receive my own "firework shows" every night when the lightening bugs came out to mate. The host was super responsive and friendly without being intrusive. His "bundle" of firewood was twice as big as expected, and a great value. Overall I would rate Rusty's Retreat as an 11 out of 10, it was that good.

Nice setting in the country and just a short drive off I-71, close to Malabar Farm and the Mohican area. Large camp site with a fire ring and a picnic table. Bathrooms and potable water in the nearby barn which was convenient and appreciated! Firewood also available on-site. 7 of the 11 sites were occupied when we were there, but noise was minimal and the overall environment was peaceful. There is a good sized lake for fishing, swimming, and canoeing too. Jim is pleasant and helpful and was available if we needed anything. This was our second trip and we would definitely return!

Beautiful property with a wonderful creek! The kids played all day in the creek and enjoyed seeing all the tiny fish and crawdads! The site is shaded and cool even on a hot day. Very private, no other campers. Some normal traffic noise in the distance you can hear at night but nothing crazy, slept like a baby! Chad & Elizabeth were amazing hosts and able to help us when we needed more firewood while we were there! It was a lovely get away into the woods to relax in nature!

We rented both the primitive campsites and every cabin on the property for our women's retreat, and it exceeded every expectation. The layout gave us the perfect balance of togetherness and privacy, allowing our group to fully immerse ourselves in the experience without feeling crowded or exposed.
The host was phenomenal—responsive, accommodating, and genuinely invested in making sure everything went smoothly from start to finish.
The swimming area was a huge hit, the grounds were peaceful and beautifully maintained, and the large gazebo became the heart of our weekend. It was the perfect space to prepare and serve meals for a large group while still allowing everyone to gather together.

Beautiful Property and Super Quiet. I ended up staying on site 1. My grand caravan fit perfectly in the space and I was able to have the back opened up to the river. It was extremely relaxing to be able to listen to the sound of the water and the birds. Loved visiting Rusty, Little Bits and Lexi. Will definitely visit again.
