Weekend Trip to Spruill Conservation Farm

I primarily camp at dispersed sites but this is the one exemption as it’s simply unbeatable. I have and will continue to go back here time and time again. Great location and hosts. Camp sites are far enough apart for privacy and also has good cell service.

What a gem of a campsite! All campsites were full this weekend and we would never know it, the campsites are spaces just far enough away from each other to feel very private. We rented 2 kayaks to leisurely paddle the sound around the Cyprus trees. We caught amazing sunsets and sunrises and the stars at nights were bright and abundant. The portable toilet between the campsites was immaculately clean and well maintained. We will definitely be back!

The Spruill Conservation Farm is a beautiful place along the Albemarle Sound with campsites close to the water. Campsite #1 had a huge fire pit with group seating, a picnic table and very clean portable toilet. Steps away from the site were several marked, well-maintained trails that skirted along the cypress swamp and adjacent farmland. I really loved this place and would definitely stay over again. I loved reading about the Spruill Conservation Farm history and mission on their website.

Fantastic spot for a weekend (or longer) getaway, or a stop-in while paddling the Roanoke River. The on-site portajohn was immaculate. The firepit and picnic table/benches at site one were quite handy as well. The on-site nature trails made for excellent wildlife viewing opportunities as well. Julia (host) was very kind and welcoming. I absolutely will book this site again in the future!

Loved staying here! I felt very safe and the farm is beautiful. Best eggs ever as well. I enjoyed meeting the owners and they gave great recommendations on where to go for local goods.

Incredibly beautiful and secluded campsites, and yet very easy to get to and even unload at the site. The sunset and stars there were amazing. Went to the site on a breezy day and a lot of wind blew in from the sound, but nothing I couldn’t manage. Julia was wonderful and very communicative about the campsites, and answered any questions I had. Had a lot of fun being here, and I can’t stress how beautiful the campsite was, how well set up the sites were and how clean the place was as well! Photos don’t do justice how cool this place was.

My husband and I had an amazing time car camping! This was our first time camping on the water and it was such a blast. Highly recommend renting the kayaks, especially for a lovely sunset view. The trails were also a nice addition and were very well maintained. Thanks so much, Julia!

Spruill Conservation Farm has amazing views with beautiful open fields and gorgeous skies. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature. The host is super friendly and makes you feel right at home. They go out of their way to make sure you have a great time. Definitely a place worth visiting.

We loved camping at Spruill Farm! The directions were clear to get to the campsite and the host was easy to reach. The fire pit was large and well kept with plenty of seating. Plenty of space to park and pitch a tent. The sound was beautiful, we loved falling asleep to the sound of waves

Weekend Trip to Gretchen’s Big Pine Carolina Estate

Stayed here in our Sprinter Van as we were travelling toward the Outer Banks. The site is set up to accommodate more than one camper, we were the only ones during our stay. Access was easy, the site was as described. Very quiet and peaceful. No cell service here so we used our Starlink.

We absolutely loved this spot. The campsite and the surrounding area was beautiful, well maintained. The hosts were wonderfully welcoming. We loved the campsite and the huge fire pit/camp sitting area.

We stayed at site 1. I had my Toyota Tundra and a Rustic Trail Polar Bear teardrop. My buddy was in his Dodge Sprinter campervan and we had plenty of room. All 3 sites looked amazing. The views are beautiful. The hiking trails definitely added to the site. We walked them daily and even did a night hike. Rode our e-bikes to the local marina(Mackeys Landing Restaurant)several times to eat. We also did some paddling. We will definitely be back.

This is the second time we've been to this site and it was even better than the first, in which we thought was perfect! You can't beat the view and serenity that this place offers. Very well maintained... just an overall fantastic experience. We met the farmers and one of the owners this time, everyone is as nice as they can be! Very accommodating! Can't wait to go back!

We found this place last year.. it is our go to spot now! Great view and quiet relaxation! Met the owner this last time as well as the farmers! Super accommodating and the spark of Southern hospitality! We've been 3 times and can't wait until we get to go again!

This was our second time camping here and although we didn’t have the best weather, the site definitely made up for it. This site is perfect for tents and has a beautiful waterfront view. We enjoyed watching lots of birds go over the water, including some juvenile and adult bald eagles. Despite the cold and rain, the conservation farm was once again a great place to stay!

The Spruill Farm belonged to the Spruill Family for over a hundred years and has just been set up as conservation easement protected land. It includes hardwood forest, swamp, a beautiful swimming beach* on the Albemarle Sound - one of the largest freshwater sounds in the world-, acres of farmland, vegetable garden and perhaps the largest fig orchard for hundreds of miles around. The purpose of the Spruill Farm is to further environmental research, promote ecological education and sustainable practices, and provide access for the public to the ever-diminishing shoreline experience. Please enjoy the incredible sunsets and woodland views, while respecting the serenity of this unique gem on the inner-banks. Wildlife on the property include Red Fox, River Otter, and 95 species of birds, including Bald Eagles (2 nests on the farm), nesting Osprey, Wood Ducks. Visit the 'Spruill Farm Conservation Project' on inaturalist(dot)org to see all 95 species, and upload any images from your observations. Because it is a nature preserve, please read the guidelines and rules closely if you choose to book with us. *Note: the shoreline changes with the wave action and the seasons. Our property is located in Deep Creek Chesapeake, VA on the intercoastal waterway/dismal swamp canal. We have 4+ acres of natural beauty at the end of a gravel road. Though we are not far from the city, nature definitely is the main character around here. The waterway is brackish (salt and fresh) so there is a wide array of wildlife to enjoy. Bald eagles and heron fly over daily and we often see otters, foxes and raccoons and birds galore. Guests have access to kayaks and dock (2 story) for fishing and/or relaxing. Water views from any spot on the property. We also have a friendly dog, Jack, that would love to meet you.

Gator Creek

Located near Alligator River on the Little Alligator Creek. Fishing all around, just a short walk thru the woods or down the road. There is no clear path cut to the creek. I try to keep as much outside interference away from the property as possible. Public boat ramp in walking distance. Game lands are nearby with hunting for deer, bear etc. in season of course. No hunting allowed at Gator Creek. Not much light pollution so great for sky watchers. Lots of wild plants. Fiddle Head Ferns, Hearts A Busting, Wild Blueberries, Elderberry and more. A porta john located at my personal cabin but guest are welcome to use it or even pitch your tent in my cabin yard. City water available. We are adding a cooking shack for your use and hope to have it ready in a couple weeks. We do ask that you dispose of your trash appropriately because of the wild animals at Gator Creek. I am not on the site when campers are there. I want each camper to have the use of the property by themselves, that is the reason for only one camper at the time. I will add, I cannot guarantee how many Dragon Flys, birds, squirrels, bears etc. you will see, if any. You are camping in the wild in wetlands surrounded by state hunting preserves. If you want the outdoor life and like the wild Gator Creek is the place for you. PS: I am open to allowing car campers and or small camper vans.
