We just retired from Active Duty Air Force! My ancestors have owned the land our NC cabins sit on since 1836. In fact, my mother grew up there after my Grandfather returned from WWII when there was no electricity and the outhouse was a bench over the creek. I grew up hiking the mountains with my brothers and our BB guns and my Uncle Frank at our family reunions. In 2005 he deeded us a parcel of land and we built our first cabin - Smawlie. We love to come to the cabin and Hike the trails on our own property, and of course, the world famous ones that join them, namely the Bartram and the Appalachian Trails. As you explore the lake, the trails, the rivers, and the mountain roads you'll see why our ancestors settled here. In 2018 - we bought the remainder of Uncle Frank's land - and in his honor built our second cabin - Frank's Landing. Also in that year I started managing my brother Bill's cabin.
When we were stationed in Alaska for 6 heavenly years - we purchased a remote parcel of property and have slowly begun to develop it. We just completed building our cabin there.

This site is gravel and level. It is in front of a babbling small creek. The site is private with robust wifi, water and 30 amp electric. The site is 40 feet in length but could probably work also for up to 50'. Slideouts are fine. There is a picnic table, gas grill, chairs and a firepit beside the site. We live on an 18 acre farm. We recently discovered the joy of traveling the US in an Airstream. When we came home after 6000+ miles, because some of our favorite sites were non-traditional ones, we decided to add a site on our farm. Enjoy the dark skies and quietness of the country. We are 10 minutes from downtown Murphy. There is only a small area of gravel which is the actual site. Everything else to get here is paved.

We just retired from Active Duty Air Force! My ancestors have owned the land our NC cabins sit on since 1836. In fact, my mother grew up there after my Grandfather returned from WWII when there was no electricity and the outhouse was a bench over the creek. I grew up hiking the mountains with my brothers and our BB guns and my Uncle Frank at our family reunions. In 2005 he deeded us a parcel of land and we built our first cabin - Smawlie. We love to come to the cabin and Hike the trails on our own property, and of course, the world famous ones that join them, namely the Bartram and the Appalachian Trails. As you explore the lake, the trails, the rivers, and the mountain roads you'll see why our ancestors settled here. In 2018 - we bought the remainder of Uncle Frank's land - and in his honor built our second cabin - Frank's Landing. Also in that year I started managing my brother Bill's cabin.
When we were stationed in Alaska for 6 heavenly years - we purchased a remote parcel of property and have slowly begun to develop it. We just completed building our cabin there.

The site is 40 feet in length but could probably work also for up to 50'. Slideouts are fine. There is a picnic table, gas grill, chairs and a firepit beside the site. We live on an 18 acre farm. We recently discovered the joy of traveling the US in an Airstream. When we came home after 6000+ miles, because some of our favorite sites were non-traditional ones, we decided to add a site on our farm. Enjoy the dark skies and quietness of the country. We are 10 minutes from downtown Murphy. There is only a small area of gravel which is the actual site. Everything else to get here is paved.

Scott was such a fantastic host! He was extremely communicative and thorough with his directions. When we arrived, he helped us get set up in our spot and even gave us a tour of his goat farm. He took his time to answer our questions and is just generally a super sweet guy. We bought some things from the shop they have (goat milk soap and lotion) that smell amazing!
The camp spot was peaceful and pretty even without anything blooming - we can only imagine how pretty it would be in the summer/fall!

Host was very accommodating to specific needs and good at communication. It came with downsides that were stated upfront and should expect based on descriptions as a very basic set up. Toilet and shower set up are indeed quite rustic though supplied as desribed, and road in and parking will result in some mud on shoes and tires for parking. If the ground is soft or damp, it could definitely be an issue without 4x4. For price and location, the budget minded will be satisfied as I was.

I had such a peaceful time at Kimber’s farm. I really enjoyed seeing the horse and donkey while it still felt relaxing and quiet. Close enough to some touristy stuff but also felt adequately tucked away.

I would definitely recommend Destination Outdoors! Matt is an awesome host, and he has created an amazing spot. The yurts are super comfy and the bathroom is great!

We truly enjoyed our stay here! This was our second time camping at Brian’s land, and we finally got to meet him in person , he is so kind, caring, and genuinely checks in to make sure we were comfortable. He even helped guide us with some great hiking routes nearby, which made the trip even better.
The campsite itself is beautiful, peaceful, and the perfect getaway if you love nature. We highly recommend this spot, and future Hipcampers should know that the host is very approachable and the land is amazing. We will definitely come back again! 🌲🏕️

Weekend Trip to The Heart Center
My wife and I stayed in the yurt to get away from the noise and celebrate my birthday and the Heart Center truly delivered. The land and energy this place holds is incredible. Liz was a fantastic host and both my wife and I were able to have a reiki session with her while staying here. To stay it was transformational for both of us would be an understatement. Both of us learned so much from our sessions and left the Heart Center feeling lighter both physically & emotionally. We will definitely visit again in the future and Liz - thank you for what you do and putting together such an amazing place of healing and warmth admist the natural beauty of the area. Much love and until next time 🙏🏼❤️

Brian was an amazing host! With the bad weather during our week long trip he moved us into the cabin for an amazing deal! He also took us in for coffee and hot chocolate one morning and turned up the furnace since it got colder! If you are up for an adventure search “Cherohala Skyway” when you get into town.

We've been waiting for so long for our trip to Waterfall Heaven, and when our time to pack was getting closer, the weather was showing rain for the whole week we were supposed to be there... That was a little discouraging because we camp with 8 dogs and 2 crazy boys in a tent and I was worried everything will be way too wet and dirty and cold but I was not going to let this gem of a place go 😂 and what an amazing beautiful and serene place this spot is! The weather didn't matter, we had fun and the boys were in the water every day (even in 48°f), the dogs had so much space to run and sniff and explore and we even got a chance to do some activities in nearby towns (Stumphouse Tunnel in nearby city of Wallhala, SC and Foxfire Museum near the campsite was amazing)!
What saved us was the fact we were able to put our 10x18 tent under the huge wooden gazebo right by the waterfall (you need to remove the tables first and they are heavy!) and that kept our tent dry inside and out. The cooking area under the smaller gazebo was perfect for us preparing meals in the rain (we've put one of the tables there and were able to stay dry while eating).
The hike up the hill to see the bigger waterfall is worth the view and not having cellphone reception or internet at the campsite was the best break I secretly wished for 😂
We have another trip booked in March 2026 and I'm hoping I'll be able to also score a week in summer 2027! Thank you DeeDee for having us!

Where to go
Lake Santeetlah
Lake Santeetlah boasts 76 miles of shoreline and tons of freshwater fish. Motorized boats are allowed, with several companies offering boat and jet ski rentals. Head to the Charikus Branch and Ground Squirrel Branch for calm waters. Then, conquer the 3.3-mile North Loop hiking trail—a well-maintained pebble pathway makes it accessible for young kids and strollers. There are pet-friendly tent campsites nearby offering wooden tent pads and picnic tables. Or opt for a glamping experience on a farm featuring wooden cabins equipped with fire rings, outdoor showers, and pit toilets.
Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest
The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is a 3,800-acre section of Nantahala National Forest. Some of the old-growth trees found here are more than 400 years old and more than 6 feet in diameter. Drive 30-minutes northwest from Robbinsville and leave early because parking is limited. View the towering ancient giants by walking the 2.1-mile Joyce Kilmer Memorial Loop Trail before breaking for lunch at the picnic tables near the entrance. While there are no campsites within the forest itself, there are plenty of tent and RV campgrounds close by.
Asheville
Head 1.5-hours east from Robbinsville to see the hustle and bustle of Asheville. Teeming with art galleries, live music venues, and views of the Appalachian Mountains, there’s plenty to do. Visit the Asheville Pinball Museum, The North Carolina Arboretum, or Asheville Treetop Adventure Park for an exhilarating zipline tour and a forest canopy obstacle course. Settle the campervan into a nearby riverside RV campsite outfitted with full hookups for water and electricity, in addition to dump stations. Or set up a home base at Blue Ridge Recreation Park with tent and RV campgrounds close to waterfalls and lakes.
When to go
The summer season lasts from early June until late September, and it generally doesn’t get hotter than 86°F (but it’s very humid). Rainfall is also common throughout the summer months with July getting the most precipitation. Star gazers should consider visiting in September and October as they typically have the clearest skies. Winter rolls around in early November, and snow is seen from December until March, with the majority of it occurring in January. Spring and fall are usually the best seasons for fishing, just keep in mind that regulations vary depending on the month, so plan accordingly.
