Lake Taghkanic is a great place for both summer and winter stays, with plenty of tent campsites as well as cabins and cottages, and a variety of activities to do year round. For winter folks, there's cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails, as well as ice skating and ice fishing areas, and plenty of fire pits to warm those chilly bones. For summer lovin', there are two beaches, so if someone kicks sand in your potato salad (accidentally, of course), you can just go to another beach and pretend like it never happened. The only sleeping quarters that are on the water are some of the cottages in the West End Cottage Area, so if you're planning on playing Beach Party Bingo, plan accordingly or be willing to walk a bit from your tent or cabin.

With three private sites deep in the Catskills, this special land has a variety of mature trees, open meadows with ferns and dogwood stands, remnants of an old apple orchard, trails across old rock walls and mountain streams through gently sloping topography, and abundant birds, frogs, newts, and other wildlife. Plus one of the best swimming ponds in all of the Catskills!
There are three sites: one tucked into a meadow in a forest clearing, another under a hemlock grove deeper in the woods, and a third reserved for Long Path thru-hikers who come down from the mountains for a break, which can also be overflow. All are off-grid and rustic but close enough to the house and parking area to have convenience, and far enough—and hidden out of view—to offer real privacy. (About a 4-minute walk from your shared toilet/supply/storage shed by driveway.) Tent area has cleared flat pads for two small tents. Location is far enough from things that you can walk a minute into the woods and feel lost to civilization, yet only two miles of paved road from downtown Windham and all that the cozy resort town has to offer.
Makes a great basecamp for exploring the rest of the Northern Catskills, or a hideaway to stay and get lost in. Hike miles of trails and old logging roads in the Elm Ridge Wild Forest, starting literally steps from your campsite. Swim in the large spring-fed pond, or just watch the colorful koi swim. Sit around the fire and reflect on the day’s adventures. Or just take in the wide-open views of distant mountains and starry skies.
Note: the only "Kitchen available" (Hipcamp's wording) is a grill over firepit. Also, toilet is a bucket-style dry composting toilet with urine diversion inside a protected shed. Camp site is a short hike along private trails from parking/shed area. Depending on weather/season, it's sometimes muddy.

The camp site is as close to pure wilderness as it gets. No vehicles allowed. From an easily accessible parking space, it's a mildly uphill ten minute hike through magical meadows deep into a hidden mountain valley in the midst of 250,000 acres. Utter privacy. The only sounds being the wind, the birds, yourself, and Herdman Brook rushing along a few yards east of your site. The beauty of the site is that it's so pristine. This is not glamping. No cabin. No platform. Need tent, tarp, or hammock, and you will sleep under more stars than you can possibly imagine.
Fire ring, cooking grate, chairs, commode, water bucket on site. We may not sell wood this year but will provide cart.

Campers ought to be aware that black bears live in these mountains., although you're not likely to see one unless it's running away from you. If you're really nervous bring bear spray, but you're not likely to need it. I literally chased one off our porch not a month ago. Also, the nation is experiencing a tick explosion. We've done what we can but do come prepared.
I would appreciate your purchasing human waste bags from me when you arrive. I'll have them here for $3.00/bag. Feel free to bring your own. You should also bring FIRE STARTER to make your life easier.
Wonderful hikes - one to a waterfall - trail head at end of Spruceton Rd. Hunter Brook, Devil's Notch, Fire Tower atop Hunter Mountain, Ridge of West Kill Mountain.
Fishing holes abound.
West Kill Brewery and Spruceton Inn Bed and Bar each half mile up the road. Civilized respites.

One more thing: DOGS. We have two: a 13 year old female whatever and a shepherd-husky mix, 4 years old, also female. They are quite friendly, although the shepherd looks intimidating, and both roam the property at will 2-3 times/day. We would prefer you not bring your dog, however, if you must, please be certain it is well behaved.

Please note while our cabin is a premium experience on a working farm, it is still an outdoor experience that takes place deep in the woods, off the grid and in a cabin built from earthy or recycled materials. It is a far cry from a typical hotel or traditional glamping.
Experience a private campsite equipped with a Casper Full Mattress, fire pit and charcoal grill. Please note there is 1 bed at the property but room next to the cabin to bring and put up additional tents. There is no power at the campsite.
THERE IS NO LONGER THE WOOD BURNING STOVE IN THE CABIN - THE TOWN MADE US TAKE IT OUT. There is also no shower. If you would like to bathe in the streams please use all natural soap as the animals drink from it. The Thermal Spring (hot tub) is no longer available. It was a $195 extra but the material and labor cost were too expensive to keep running it.

Spring, Summer and Fall are the best times to come for a visit. NOW is the time to book your experience with us. Enjoy rustic camping on our 115 acres of upstate NY forest. We are just a short drive to Cooperstown, the Baseball Hall of Fame and the summer baseball camps as well as the other museums that it has to offer. Howe Caverns in Cobleskill is also about 30 minutes away as well.
The property consists of a mixture of upland hardwoods (mainly Oak, Maple and Cherry) with scattered stands of Red Pine, White Spruce, Hemlock and two open fields/pastures. There are also the occasional conifers scattered about just to keep things interesting. The majority of the property is gently sloping from the South up towards the North. The is also a nice ridge on the NE corner of the property to aid in topographic diversity. One of the fields is a seven acre hay field and the other is a five acre food plot planted in clover, chicory and other grasses. This field has also been recently planted with Apples, Pear, American Plum, Red Osier Dogwood, Persimmon, Red Mulberry, Chinese Chestnut, and Hazelnuts. These are all young at this time but will start to provide diversity and wildlife interest in the coming years.
Wildlife abounds here at the homestead. Whitetail Deer and Eastern Wild Turkey are very common to see. We also have a variety of small animals as well such as Red and Grey Squirrels, Raccoons, Porcupine, Opossum, Fisher etc. For the birders, we have Barred and Great Horned Owls and Red Tailed Hawks. It is also not uncommon to see Bald Eagles soaring over the fields looking for their next meal.
All of the property is easily accessible via our extensive trail system. There is also another 187 acres that borders our land that also has trails that would allow hiking. We have detailed maps so that getting lost would be the least of your worries.

We rent the lodgings (Chalet, Cabin & Glampsite)
to support and fund the maintenance and expansion of native and pollinating species of plants, expanding the area that we steward, providing habitat and refuge for animals, insects, birds and more.
We wish to share our sacred land with people that love and respect the Earth, who wish to contribute to a conservation project through their own presence and mindfulness.
Once a RV camping park called "Thunder Hill Campground" in the late 1960's early 1970's, the land sat mostly unused for 15 years before Rachel came to steward it 20 years ago.
We are 107 acres of forest, a 9
acre lake, ponds, creeks, labyrinth, a Holistic Retreat Center & Organic Permaculture Farm at a
2000 foot elevation in the Heldeberg Mountains.
500 million years ago during the Devonian Period this was a sea, so we live in shale based mountains with lots of fossils! The Heldebergs are one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth, these mountains have been worn down to 2000 feet over time.
Native Americans lived in the area many years ago and we are quite sure this was Native American sacred ceremony land.
Hiking, canoeing, swimming and fishing (catch & release only) are available on site.
There are many places to hike in the area, an Eagle Trail
and in winter, 2 miles away, is a Nature Preserve that rents snowshoes and has
trails for snowshoeing and cross country skiing,
Very rural and private, even though we are only 25 miles SW of Albany, NY the capital of NYS, here it is quiet and peaceful.
We do have 3 very friendly dogs that will want to be your best friends. Also farm animals that you can meet.
There will be farm noises, roosters greeting the morning and various grunts and snorts... far less noise than any modern city.
Albany, along with the surrounding areas, have many events etc going on. There's hiking, biking, nature parks, horse racing, concerts, festivals and events and so much more. Links and information can be provided to campers that stay with us that are looking for entertainment & excursions.
We are near Albany, Berne, Catskill, Cairo, Cobleskill, East Durham, Greenville, Hunter, Knox, Medusa, Oak Hill, Middleburgh, Schoharie, Westerlo, Windham.

My wife and I booked it to recoup from a long road trip with our two dogs. We loved it. Great vibe, very private, super comfortable, great sunrise. Great amenities and amazing vibe they thought of everything. Sauna, cold plunge hot tub all amazing and easy. The dogs loved it. Great walking trails nearby. Super comfortable cabin, hot shower, accessible and private toilet. Grill, smokeless fire pit on their sweet deck. Can’t recommend enough.

My girlfriend and I had an excellent stay at the HH— was exactly what we were looking for and as advertised. We extended our stay an extra day— we thought we might want to have our last day off for some extra adventure elsewhere but, once we settled in, we loved having HH as a nest. We would have stayed longer. Loved the sky gazing day and night and stereo indoor and out set up. Very well stocked with a great local coffee and herbal tea made by Kendra, plus cool swag and plenty of pots and pans etc to cook with. I set up my Coleman two burner stove to compliment the grill. Def recommend the sauna. It’s a little bit of a walk to the hot tub and sauna so recommend some slip on shoes/sandals and a bathrobe for ease. Thanks to Shaggy and Kendra!

Very fun site. Be prepared because the animals are out and about all day. The shower and composte toilet are convenient and clean. There are several fire pits and available campsites. The ones in the open field are closer to the animals and the ones further back are more removed if you prefer to cook without goat harassment.lol.

I had such a wonderful experience solo camping at Beaverwood Farm! Paul and Marilyn were incredibly kind, welcoming, and accommodating. They made me feel comfortable from the moment I arrived.
What made the stay really special was being surrounded by the farm animals roaming freely around the property. It was such a peaceful and unique experience to wake up, relax, and enjoy nature while having the animals nearby. 🐐🐓🌿
The farm has a beautiful, peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy to slow down and disconnect from the busy world. As a solo camper, it was exactly the kind of relaxing getaway I was looking for.

Shaggy and Kendra have truly curated something special and wonderful. The cabin is pristine and cozy, and the bathroom and shower amenities make the experience glamorous. Our favorite part is sitting by the solo stove and listening to the records Shaggy provides! This is our second stay at Hippie Haven and we can’t wait to come back again. We utilized the sauna and the hot tub, as well as the fire wood bonus package. Everything is so user friendly and makes for a worry-free and relaxing stay. The land is quiet and utterly peaceful, and the only critters we encountered were frogs at the pond and a few grazing deer in the morning. Nothing but good things to say! 5/5 stars! P.S. We had another wonderful time at Paul and Marilyn's farm. It's so nice seeing our favorite animals each year and watching them get so big. Peaches the pig, Marge the donkey, and Ginger the cow are always such a treat to see. We also got to meet baby cow Heidi who loved eating lettuce and carrots.
The facilities are great as there is an outdoor shower with hot water and a two sinks on the property. There is a compostable outhouse at the halfway point of the property as well. There is lots of space to camp and each camping spot is unique.
We prefer camping on the plateau, but we camped near the outhouse this time and enjoyed it a lot. We had a view of the lake and spent a few hours taking photos of water birds and reading on our picnic blanket. There are grates to grill over the fire pit and there is firewood for sale at $20 per shelf, which makes it convenient to make a campfire. There is also a flushable toilet (if that should interest you) near the main house area as well.
Paul set up a bonfire during Labor Day weekend, which was nice to watch and chat with other campers. We had a few cows come by to join us too!
There is a Shoprite close by too for food (about a 10 min drive). Paul and Marilyn also provided us with their map of the property and highlighted some points of interest in the nearby area. We did a few trails at Walnut Mountain and enjoyed it a lot!
You can't find a more peaceful and relaxing place like this. We look forward to returning again!

Just spent a fabulous weekend at Mark’s campsite! The site was on the edge of a gorgeous lake, and we enjoyed swimming, exploring in the canoe, and walking around the woods. The site was secluded and well-maintained. Mark was a lovely host and took good care of us with water, firewood, and transportation for our supplies. Meeting Dottie the dog was an added bonus!
