We are in the rural area between Hesperus, Durango, and Mancos - An easy drive to Durango and its thrift shops, restaurants, galleries, cafes, Animas River and River Trail, and hiking and biking trails. Mancos is filled with art galleries, a wonderful bakery and cafe, beauty, and endless trails. Also within driving distance are Phil's World, Cortez, Sand Canyon, the beautiful La Plata Canyon, Mesa Verde National Park, Lake NIghthorse, and more! There are endless hiking and biking trails within driving distance of the property. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing abound and alpine skiing at Purgatory Ski Resort are popular winter activities. The views of the La Platas and Sleeping Ute are ever changing, awe inspiring, and constant from the deck of The Art Shack. On the property are cats, two dogs, two equines (you will hear our burro braying). Our neighbors have yaks, cattle, goats, sheep, dogs, horses, poultry, and other farm animals. You will also see the wild critters that inhabit our corner of La Plata County. You are welcome to wander our property beyond the Big Stick Ditch but do not go into the pasture with our burro or enter any of the out buildings. Park within steps of the Art Shack, cross the foot bridge over the bubbling irrigation ditch, and you have arrived! Please remove your shoes before entering! There is electricity, a queen bed, rustic chairs inside, an outdoor table and chairs, a composting toilet, a coffee machine, and purified drinking water for your use. An electric heater is supplied during winter months. There is no air conditioning. We are available if needed (unless we are out of town adventuring) but will not expect to interact with you as you relax. No dogs are allowed - 2 people max - No smoking of lit substances inside The Art Shack. Please remove your shoes before entering The Art Shack!

It's one tent on 13 private acres, about ten minutes north of Durango, and it's the only one out here. While you're here, the whole place is yours. You ride in on the side-by-side, so there's no parking lot and nothing to haul. We're in a valley, so you'll see a few homes off in the distance and hear a car go by now and then, but the acres and the riverbank are yours. Most people get out here, put the phone away, and don't pick it back up till they leave. We've got our own stretch of the river too. Good place to sit with a book or float around on a warm afternoon. My seven year old and I booked our stay at this lovely camp for two nights, extended for an third, and wish we were staying longer. This local family owned and operated camp has truly been an oasis of birds and deer, really close to town yet feels far away in the best way. We had dinner every night at delicious restaurants on Main Street, did laundry nearby at a clean, friendly laundromat, and filled up with gas, ice, and groceries in the stores. We took day trips to Mesa Verde, Bisti Badlands, and Chaco Canyon while here. Had we stayed one more day, we would have enjoyed fishing nearby. We would definitely stay here again!

I stayed in the basic cabin (ie, the fancy shed). It was perfect, one queen bed, two twin bunks, ac, heat, ceiling fan and a light. The sites are a little close together but I was not spending the summer so not a big deal, I was there to sleep after spending the day at mesa verde. The grounds and restroom/shower was very neat and clean. I would definitely stay again. There is definitely road noise but as you can see from the posting, they are next to a major road. It was not a big deal in the cabin as I had windows closed as the temps were pretty cool.

The art shack is a great spot. The view is gorgeous and even though the temperature got up to 87 it was nice a cool as the shack is in a small group of pine and popular trees. Even if it had been too hot Gretchen provided a cooler with a fan. There's a swing out front that was lovely to sway on while I watched the sunset. It was beautiful and peaceful. In distance you can hear some cows mooing and an occasional donkey song. Everything you want in a weekend away.

The Art Shack was delightful. The hosts Gretchen and Andre were wonderful hosts. Just large enough to fit a bed and a few chairs... Internet worked great... They had a 5 gallon jug artfully propped up for easy access to water... The composting toilet was the best, clean, creative and scented of cedar. The view from the cedar throne was of the vast expanse of Colorado ranch land with Mesa Verde looming. One warm night , I truly enjoyed sleeping in my bag on the porch... The Vast Silence, the cool air and the Stars were the Stuff of Dreams. We went swimming in nearby lakes, so a shower was not necessary. It was a pleasure taking the back roads to Durango and Mancos. Beauty everywhere in every direction. I know that The Art Shack is just going to get better with our every stay. :-) Greg and Roberta

Weekend Trip to The Cockhouse lodge.

We loved staying at the lodge. This is a beautiful area of New Mexico about 20-30 minutes east of Bloomington, and nothing is close. Be sure and fill up with gas and get your groceries before leaving town. Derek runs a guided hunt business and the lodge is normally used to host the hunters on his trips. Fortunately for us he had a vacant room available which was perfect for a very restful night as we were passing through the area on an off roading trip. The bed was super comfortable, and the room was so quiet we actually overslept the next morning. It rained all night, so we didn’t get an opportunity to enjoy the firepit in the courtyard but it is a great set up for relaxing at the end of the day. We would absolutely love to stay again!
