In New Mexico, in 45 minutes or less you can be at one of the following: Navajo Lake State Park, Aztec Ruins, Glade Run Recreational area, Jackson Lake Wildlife Refuge, Farmington Lake Recreational area. San Juan Quality Waters in the San Juan River offers world class fishing. The Animas River offers fun river floats. Chaco Canyon National Park is only 2 hours away.
In Colorado, we are about an hour from these attractions: Mesa Verde National Park, McPhee Reservoir, Canyon of the Ancients, Lake Nighthorse Day Use Recreation area, Chimney Rock and Purgatory Ski Resort. La Plata Canyon has great mountain hiking and is only 30 minutes away.

Ten acres overlook the La Plata Mountains outside of Durango, CO. My small farm borders pinyon forest and rings with crickets, redwing blackbirds, and chorus frogs. You can find shady spots in the Forest, the orchard, or enjoy the view from the clearing. The irrigation ditch offers fun for dogs and ambient sounds. This is a working farm, and we are often in the greenhouse and garden. Leashed dogs only to protect wildlife and chickens! Nestled on seven acres of former ranch land, and enjoy a relatively level RV site (pull in or back in) with views of Mesa Verde, the La Plata Mountains, and the shade of mature juniper trees. Feel far from everything while only a few miles from town. Enjoy the starry skies, the company of wandering mule deer, and the sound of coyotes conversing with one another. At 7,000' above sea level, in the high desert of SW Colorado, we get over 250 sunny days a year, big beautiful snows in winter (and sometimes as late as June), and monsoon rains in late summer. Spring can be cool and windy, but you'll experience the reawakening of the plants, the lowing of mother cows and their calves on nearby ranches, and maybe even a blooming prickly pear or two!
In the heart of the Mancos River Valley, you'll find yourself at the perfect basecamp for all that the area has to offer! It's just 15 minutes to the entrance gate at Mesa Verde National Park, designated in April of 2021 as the 100th Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association.
Take a scenic two mile drive to historic Downtown Mancos, to find art, dining, and fun. Historic Mancos, known for its thriving creative district, is the home of the The Raven House Gallery, The Artisans of Mancos Co-op, The Painted Turtle Gallery, Bombdiggity, and Kilgore American Indian Art.
Downtown Mancos is also home to dining options from local food trucks to fine dining. Fenceline Cidery and their delightful riverside cider garden host a variety of local food trucks on a rotating basis Family friendly eats are always on the menu at the Columbine Bar & Grill. Deco Dessert, offers something for your sweet tooth with homemade ice cream, artisan chocolates, and cakes. Beyond downtown, you'll find easy access to Mancos State Park, mountain biking at Phil's World, Aqueduct, and the Boggy Draw trail systems, paddling at Summit Lake, paddling and boating at McPhee Reservoir, the 88 mile Canyon of the Ancients Scenic Drive, and miles of hiking and off-roading trails in the San Juan National Forest. Or head just 40 minutes into Durango for a ride on the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a run on the rapids of the Animas River, or a powder day at Purgatory (resort an hour from the site).
If you want to venture further afield, Telluride, Moab, Monument Valley, and Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are all within 2.5 hours. Or take a drive along the San Juan Skyway scenic byway to see the best of Colorado's Western Slope including Silverton and Ouray.

My home is full of charm and history in the heart of Aztec, NM. I have a spot for an RV, an outdoor bedroom on the patio or the occasional bedroom inside available. There can be water and electricity for a higher rate. I have a hammock, fire pit, inflatable hot tub that stays at 104, and an outdoor movie screen. There's a brew pub, VFW, Pizza place, Thai restaurant and others all in walking distance. I'm 20 minutes from Tico Time Resort, 40 minutes to Durango and 15 minutes to Farmington City proper. We are in the rural area between Hesperus, Durango, and Mancos - An easy drive to Durango and its thrift shops, restaurants, galleries, cafes, Animas River and River Trail, and hiking and biking trails. Mancos is filled with art galleries, a wonderful bakery and cafe, beauty, and endless trails. Also within driving distance are Phil's World, Cortez, Sand Canyon, the beautiful La Plata Canyon, Mesa Verde National Park, Lake NIghthorse, and more! There are endless hiking and biking trails within driving distance of the property. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing abound and alpine skiing at Purgatory Ski Resort are popular winter activities. The views of the La Platas and Sleeping Ute are ever changing, awe inspiring, and constant from the deck of The Art Shack.
On the property are cats, two dogs, two equines (you will hear our burro braying). Our neighbors have yaks, cattle, goats, sheep, dogs, horses, poultry, and other farm animals. You will also see the wild critters that inhabit our corner of La Plata County. You are welcome to wander our property beyond the Big Stick Ditch but do not go into the pasture with our burro or enter any of the out buildings.
Park within steps of the Art Shack, cross the foot bridge over the bubbling irrigation ditch, and you have arrived!
Please remove your shoes before entering!
There is electricity, a queen bed, rustic chairs inside, an outdoor table and chairs, a composting toilet, a coffee machine, and purified drinking water for your use. An electric heater is supplied during winter months. There is no air conditioning.
We are available if needed (unless we are out of town adventuring) but will not expect to interact with you as you relax.
No dogs are allowed - 2 people max - No smoking of lit substances inside The Art Shack. Please remove your shoes before entering The Art Shack!

Dry camp outside the north entrance to Chaco Canyon. The grounds were clean and level. There was a clean porta-potty there also. The campground is located about 16 miles from the park on a bumpy dirt and gravel road. Host stopped by to introduce himself. We were so glad we could stay here and not pull the trailer into the park. There was plenty of room or tents and RVs. Good countryside views from campground and VERY quiet.

Though we didn’t meet our hosts, this spot is perfect for a stay before heading to Chaco Canyon National Historical Park. Excellent directions led us easily to this dry camp. It is barebones with a portapotty and a fire pit, but we were grateful for the night’s rest in that beautiful Mesa setting. Many thanks to Wayne and Yolanda!

It was the perfect place for us, and the closest place to Chaco Historical Park that we could find. There are some washboard roads to contend with but we had the place to ourselves for the most part, couple more campers pulled in at night. It will be hard to find clearer night skies. Wow! What stars!

I didn't actually stay at Horse Thief Campground... I lucked out and got a first come space in the park and I grabbed it because I didn't want to do the road out and back to the park. Horse Thief is 13 miles from the park just where the blacktop ends. It isn't the prettiest campground and it is a dry camp, but other than the park, there is nothing for 40 miles. If you can't get a place in the park, it is a basic no frills alternative. Gallo campground in the park is prettier, but not many more amenities than Horse Thief.

Loved that we could see both sunrise and sunset from our spot. We didn’t need to use the porta-potty but it was handy. Dry camp is easy
to access. Less than 1/4 mile on gravel to reach their driveway. Our 2nd best option for proximity to Chaco Canyon as we were too late to reserve in the campground there. Friendly host.

I loved camping on Wayne and Yolanda's land! The secluded desert surroundings were beautiful, clean and we had all the land to ourselves. The spot we chose had a fire ring and made our experience just perfect. The starry night sky was truly an unforgettable experience! The location was easy to get to and just 25 min away to Chaco National Park entrance. Will definitely come again!!!

Chaco Canyon had been on my bucket list for a long time and this was a great location to stay and tent camp when Gallo Campground was full. It was private, clean, flat and no hassle. It was honestly the quietest campground I have ever stayed in. The roads getting in were easy, the property was well maintained and it was 35 minutes from Chaco Canyon. I read some of the other reviews for this spot and frankly the negative ones are inaccurate. If you have a complaint about this campsite you should just get a hotel.

Terrific! The spot is 10 minutes from Durango and far enough from the owners home that it felt private. And there are endless acres of forest for the dogs to explore. We had no problem accessing the site in our rwd Ford Transit. Verizon signal was adequate. Tree coverage made starlink useless.
