Weekend Trip to Gossman Goat Ranch
Cathy and her family are amazing hosts and have a beautiful property. They were so welcoming to my family and made us feel at home. The cabin itself is so cozy, the loft bed was great, my daughter loved looking out over the woods from bed in the evening and morning. The wood stove kept the room warm throughout the night. Will definitely be staying again next time we need to get away for a quick weekend trip!

1 night at Serenity Valley
Serenity Valley was like heaven on Earth! Every thing was perfect, clean, relaxing and majestic! We were able to see so many plant sprout, birds and wildlife! Being set in the valley is like being on the set of fairy tale movie! I will be telling all of my friends about this hidden gem! Plus our dogs got to run free, which never happens in the city! Thank you for the amazing stay!

Weekend Trip to Gossman Goat Ranch
We enjoyed our stay at the cabin. It’s tucked back in the woods behind there main place far enough that you can’t see or hear anything from their farm… really makes you feel like you are alone in the woods! It was about 30 degrees overnight but the wood stove kept the cabin comfortable. We also like the extra touch of already set up hammocks, and a hand built bench by the fire pit. Great option for “camping” during the fall or spring if you don’t want to face the cooler temps in a tent. Hiked 20 miles between Forestville state park and lake Louise state park which are both close to the cabin site.

2 nights at Gossman Goat Ranch
My family and I (2 adults, 3 and 8 year old) loved staying at the cabin on Cathy’s goat farm. We arrived on an unexpectedly cold and snowy spring weekend, and I was afraid we were in for a cold and wet weekend. Not the case! The cabin was toasty warm (Cathy was thoughtful to warm it up for us in advance) from both an indoor propane heater and an enclosed fireplace. With that and the duvets we brought, it was a cozy retreat. Bonus points for the games provided and helpful supply boxes in case we forgot any essentials! Cathy is a friendly and thoughtful host. Definitely get the eggs from the farm chickens and special handmade goat milk soap (the scents are SO good). She let us have our space, but was right there anytime we had a question or needed help. Our bonus hosts - Cathy’s three kids - were also so kind and friendly to my daughters, and they had a bunch of fun playing on the trampoline, playground and around the property. The definite highlight of the trip for all of us were the goats and other farm animals! My daughter got to hold a goat kid that had just been born hours before, which was truely magical. Being able to hang out in the field with a huge herd of goats, a few calves, chickens, friendly barn cats and dogs really made the trip special. All the animals were so friendly! We’ll definitely be returning!

Shady Rest Acres

Once the site of the historic V.J. Fetzner Brewery from the late 19th Century. The land is now used as a hobby farm, honey bee sanctuary and nursery to a unique tree species normally not found in Southeastern Minnesota. Remnants of the brewery are still visible. Foundation walls outline the massive structure of the brewery. Nestled in the center of the foundation is the entrance to the sixty-seven foot deep cave that once held barrels of beer and can be accessed by canoe only. Hops have been located on the property and are believed to be ancestors of those raised to make the beer once stored in the cave. The pond that provides access to the cave was dug out in the early 1990's to create a fish out for the Spring Falls Trout Farm that used to exist across the highway. Some of the original brood stock still exist and continue to naturally stock the pond. It is not uncommon to see fish that are five to ten pounds in size. We do not allow fishing from our pond. The residents house is built to scale to the original brew master's house. While the house is only twenty-four years old it looks as though you have taken a step back in time. The name Shady Rest was given to the house by the Brew Master's wife. We thought it was appropriate to keep the name alive. Shady Rest Acres is comprised of twenty-three acres of beautiful woodlands and pasture that are protected forever in the Minnesota Land Trust. The pasture is home to Scottish Highlander cows, two miniature donkeys, five sheep, four goats, honey bees and a flock of chickens. Scottish Highlanders were selected for both their grazing and browsing abilities. They are very docile and make excellent pasture mates to the smaller species sharing the pasture. The cows are excellent forest managers. They clear out invasive species such as Honey Suckle, Buckthorn, and Barberry which can often be difficult to manage. A guided tour with the host can be taken to meet the pasture animals. The forest is comprised of many tree species. Some are unique in that they normally do not grow in this region of Minnesota. The yellow birch is a species normally found in Northern Minnesota. It's bark is golden in color and glistens when the sun hits it just right. We have a cluster of several yellow birch including one that is so big that the bark no longer looks golden but instead is grey and very rough. Years ago the largest of these trees made excellent wood for turning bowls. Blue Beech (musclewood) can also be found on the property. As the name indicates the bark is shaped like muscles. Songbirds and some other species will use different parts of the tree as a food source. Towering white pines also speckle the landscape. Mother pine requires at least two humans arm lengths to encircle the whole tree. She is a favorite resting spot for the barred owl. There is oak, elm, maple, ceders, poplars and numerous other species. Honey bees are an integral part of the landscape. We partnered with a friend and started raising honey bees two years ago in order to do our part to keep pollinators thriving. Their hives are located in the pasture where it has the perfect amount of early morning sun to get them moving and afternoon shade to balance out the summer heat. It is not uncommon to see them pollinating garden plants, trees and wild flowers around the property. One of their favorite feeding spots is the acre and a half prairie which offers a range of plants including big blue stem, wild indigo and baby blue stem, to name a few. Not only are honey bees essential to the food chain but they also provide a very enriching experience when they are observed moving about their hives. There is nothing more relaxing and fascinating than watching these amazing creatures.

Hiking access into Duck Egg county park with over 10 miles of trails to explore on 900 acres. Drive and park directly at our cabin nestled in the driftless. It is totally private on 140 acres. Watch the wildlife from the porch while enjoying a campfire. The cabin offers 2 queen beds on the loft, a futon and fully stocked kitchen. Outdoor bathroom with plumbing. We offer 2 campsites directly on the Bad Axe River with hike in or utv assist access only. Park at designated parking area. The campsite has fire ring and table and chairs at the site, firewood available for 10/night. 5 gallons potable water provided. Hike in or purchase utv assist to get gear to the site $20 both ways We also have a 'glampsite' which already has a 10x12 wall tent on a 12x20 platform, with a queen bed and all bedding included. 10 gallons potable water provided. An outdoor kitchen contains everything you need to lessen your packing for a total relaxed and spoiled camping experience, all paper products and cookware in stocked kitchen. Charcoal and grill, 24" gas griddle, 2 burner coleman stove with propane included. Glamp directly on the river. There is a separate picnic area with fire ring, picnic table and swing set for the kids! Pets are welcome! We have a lovely piece of property to come enjoy a getaway at. We enjoy all of the peace and quiet around here. The night sky is unbeatable in my eyes. We have a small hobby farm with lots of very tame animals. We have 42 acres to roams with lots of trails within the woods that are filled with aged oak trees and many young maple trees. Our property is filled with lots of wild flowers and wildlife. We are locate 3 miles from the root river if you enjoy fishing or going for a float down the river. There are two caves in our area that are a must see while you are visiting. I you like to hike there is a state park 14 minutes from us that have many miles of hiking trails and horse trails. If you are more the small town strolling type of person we have lots of small towns around us that are filled with shops and lots of great food! There is a large system of bike trails in our area that make a very fun way to check out some of the small towns. If you have a family with kids we have a lot of fun activities you can do with your kids, like spending time with the goats, chickens and ducks, playing on our playground, or taking a nice walk through the woods looking for fossils!

We are planning to plant a garden in the spring to share with our guests. Inside, there is a loft with 2 double beds and downstairs there is a double bed, wood burning stove and sitting area.
