Weekend Trip to Ranch Retreat Camping

We had fun! It was a nice little sight, not as private as I would have thought but the less public area is so rural and in the valley that it didn’t matter. I love being on the creek and the kids loved meeting the cows. The little twinkle lights around the property were so sweet, a couple had fallen off their branch so our kids were walking around with them in the evening. It was so quiet and peaceful I felt like we were transferred into a little fairy land.

Beautiful views and a joyous soundtrack await at this destination. Located in the bluffs with AMA access points just down the road to fish Pickwick Creek. A very quiet destination with clear instructions and all of the amenities listed. Buy firewood in advance and it’ll be ready and waiting for your arrival. Keep in mind this is in a valley alongside a creek, so the low temps at night will feel lower. I’d highly recommend staying here if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway.

If you're looking for a peaceful, authentic farm stay, Valley Angus Farms is a fantastic choice! The views are absolutely beautiful — rolling hills, a small creek running through the property, and if you're up early, you might even catch sight of eagles fishing in the morning. Truly a special, serene place. It's important to remember this is a working cattle farm, so you should expect the sights and smells that come with that — but it just adds to the charm and authenticity of the experience. We stayed in the bunkhouse, which was perfect! It had everything we needed: a comfortable bed, a couch, stove, sinks, a handicap-accessible bathroom (which was incredibly helpful), plus a washer and dryer. Since we were traveling in just a van, it was wonderful to have access to all these amenities. Our original plan was to stay in the RV, but after Jamie fell asleep on the couch, we happily ended up staying inside. Dan was out of town during our visit and had missed the part where we had ordered burgers for the evening. He kindly offered a refund or some hamburger meat instead — we gladly took the fresh beef! Gingie, who met us on arrival, was so sweet and accommodating. Since our setup was small, she let us park the van under a covering, which was an extra kindness we truly appreciated. There are three large farm dogs who are very friendly — and they even got along great with our little Chihuahua, Biscuit. Overall, we had a wonderful, peaceful experience and will definitely stay again.

My experience at the Double J campsite #5 was nothing short of serene and rejuvenating. The river that flows through the site is incredibly peaceful, creating a beautiful backdrop for relaxation. Surrounded by lush nature and abundant wildlife, the setting felt like a true escape into the outdoors. The campsites themselves are well-spaced, providing just the right amount of privacy without feeling isolated. I appreciated the convenience of being able to purchase bundles of wood right on-site and easily pay through Venmo, making the logistics of camping seamless. Jeff, the host, was exceptionally friendly and attentive. He promptly answered all my questions before my arrival, ensuring a smooth check-in process and a warm welcome. The porta-potty was surprisingly clean and well-maintained, adding to the overall comfort of the experience. One of the highlights was gathering around the campfire in the evenings. It provided a perfect opportunity to unwind and connect with nature, exactly what I needed to recharge. Overall, my stay at Double J's campsite exceeded expectations. It's a fantastic retreat for anyone looking to immerse themselves in nature's tranquility while enjoying modern conveniences and hospitality. I can't wait to return!

Very nice location. Met a very nice couple from Alaska! Conveniently located off the Highway. Loved the ability to buy farm raised meats! Can't wait to eat the tomahawk steak! When you don't want the normal rv park and small atmosphere. This is your location! We didn't realize State Parks don't open until May!

Host was fantastic. A quiet little spot, very peaceful. Barred owl, loons and I’m pretty sure I heard a bobcat. Great for a short stay or longer one.

Weekend Trip to Gossman Goat Ranch

Cathy and her family are amazing hosts and have a beautiful property. They were so welcoming to my family and made us feel at home. The cabin itself is so cozy, the loft bed was great, my daughter loved looking out over the woods from bed in the evening and morning. The wood stove kept the room warm throughout the night. Will definitely be staying again next time we need to get away for a quick weekend trip!

Weekend Trip to Gossman Goat Ranch

We enjoyed our stay at the cabin. It’s tucked back in the woods behind there main place far enough that you can’t see or hear anything from their farm… really makes you feel like you are alone in the woods! It was about 30 degrees overnight but the wood stove kept the cabin comfortable. We also like the extra touch of already set up hammocks, and a hand built bench by the fire pit. Great option for “camping” during the fall or spring if you don’t want to face the cooler temps in a tent. Hiked 20 miles between Forestville state park and lake Louise state park which are both close to the cabin site.

2 nights at Gossman Goat Ranch

My family and I (2 adults, 3 and 8 year old) loved staying at the cabin on Cathy’s goat farm. We arrived on an unexpectedly cold and snowy spring weekend, and I was afraid we were in for a cold and wet weekend. Not the case! The cabin was toasty warm (Cathy was thoughtful to warm it up for us in advance) from both an indoor propane heater and an enclosed fireplace. With that and the duvets we brought, it was a cozy retreat. Bonus points for the games provided and helpful supply boxes in case we forgot any essentials! Cathy is a friendly and thoughtful host. Definitely get the eggs from the farm chickens and special handmade goat milk soap (the scents are SO good). She let us have our space, but was right there anytime we had a question or needed help. Our bonus hosts - Cathy’s three kids - were also so kind and friendly to my daughters, and they had a bunch of fun playing on the trampoline, playground and around the property. The definite highlight of the trip for all of us were the goats and other farm animals! My daughter got to hold a goat kid that had just been born hours before, which was truely magical. Being able to hang out in the field with a huge herd of goats, a few calves, chickens, friendly barn cats and dogs really made the trip special. All the animals were so friendly! We’ll definitely be returning!

I would recommend the Farm to anyone. Ashley is great to deal with and is very accommodating. The property sits on beautiful acreage with trees and a river! Weekend Trip to Frickson Family Farms, LLC.

We loved our stay at Frickson Farm, the cabin was perfect! We loved stocking up on meat and goods from the farm store. It’s near the highway but very quite and peaceful and the stars were beautiful.

I enjoyed a number of beautiful sunsets on the patio!

The property is beautiful, the directions were clear and Ashley is a great host! The Wrangler room is very comfortable and adorned with great decor! I felt so comfortable there, I would definitely recommend it to anyone. The property has a number of different areas to explore. There is a nice fire pit down by the river and it is so peaceful! We absolutely loved the setup of the tiny home! Wood stove kept us warm and cozy while the snow fell outside. Awesome patio area so we cooked all of our food over the fire pit which included a handy movable grate. Having firewood included was so nice. The 3 miles of hiking were enjoyed greatly by us and our dog!

2 nights at The Double J

We loved our experience at double J!! As more private campers, we were definitely lucky to have our pick of the lots since there were no other campers this time around. This space has 5 lots, within view of each other, along the river with a lot of field space and hamocking trees!! This space would be amazing for a family reunion or group camping! This time of year allowed for a pleasantly low river for walking along, fly fishing, and we caught a number of small cubs! The stars were glorious and we were visited by many deer and other woodland creatures in the evenings! It was great to have the ability to get fresh water, use an outhouse and have access to cut wood for a small fee! It was a neat perk to get to visit with the host's horse who was very friendly! What a lovely time it was, we couldn't be more happy with our experience!

Great site! Site 1 and 5 are the best two I’d say, 1 for having the burbling creek sounds, 5 is better for more privacy. All of the sites are quite wide open, if there are other people there you will all see each other, but the sites are well kept and the stream they all overlook is quite beautiful. I will absolutely return. The hosts are nice and very communicative. Jeff seems like a great guy. Also the available wood is really nice to have, and when I purchased it was all VERY dry and easy to light and burn.

Nice camp set up with water and electricity. Smooth entrance and exit for our 28' travel trailer. Andy responded quickly and ensured we were all set up even though we arrived after dark. Only downside is I-90 is just across the field and highway noise was a part of the stay. Thanks much Frickson's.

The Double J

Welcome to the Double J! Of the 71 acres we own, about half is tillable and the other half is woods and pastures for our horses. Within that, there is a beautiful secluded 3-acre meadow nestled down along along a beautiful 1,200 foot stretch of the Zumbro River where we have 5 spacious tent/RV campsites. While the campsites are all adjacent to each other along the river, they are each very spacious (the smallest being 100' wide and 75' deep), with some mature trees scattered around. Each sites (except Site #1) is able to accommodate up to 8 people and more than one tent or RV. There is a small meadow above all the sites where campers can play catch or other games. We provide and maintain a centrally located outhouse and keep the entire area mowed throughout the year. All sites offer great shade trees (perfectly spaced for hanging up a hammock) and access to the river - great for those hot summer days! Water activities to be enjoyed include fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and tubing (equipment not included). Some campers will drop in upstream at the Covered Bridge Park and float down to their campsite. The Zumbro River, especially in the fishing hole, offers great fishing including Trout, Small-mouth, Red-horse, and an occasional Northern or Sauger. Campers are welcome to to meander out into our pastures to pet our two horses, Shiloh and Champ. Also, we are just over a mile from town where you can visit Covered Bridge Park which has a Frisbee golf course and a nice play area for younger kids. Reserving adjacent sites, or all of the sites, makes for the ideal setting for a large family or group camp-out. In order to prevent overcrowding, we do reserve the right to limit number of sites, or campers per site based on overall parties/campers in the camping area. We will notify you if there are any limits at the time of your booking. We enjoy being able to share our property with others, and it is our desire to promote a safe, peaceful, family-friendly environment, therefore, be sure to note, we do have a NO ALCOHOL policy. PLEASE NOTE: Be sure to read the "RV Details" on the site information page as the road to the camping area may limit the type or size of RV due to a couple dips, a sharper curve, and it's steeper slope. Also, keep in mind, we reserve the right to cancel any reservations due to heavy rains or floods that may require our sites some additional time to dry out sufficiently. Dry firewood can be purchased for $5.00/bundle. Jolene (me, - owner) and my two sons, Riley and Logan, put a lot of time and dedication into our ranch. Our ranch is located on 40 acres where anyone can find their little piece of “peace.” We pride ourselves on taking excellent care of our guests and making them feel at home when they step onto our land. We will do our best to accommodate your needs in any way possible. Our WIFI is not always 100% reliable. If you need WIFI during your stay, please bring another option with you, such as a hotspot on your cell phone, in case ours is not dependable. Shady Rest Acres

Once the site of the historic V.J. Fetzner Brewery from the late 19th Century. The land is now used as a hobby farm, honey bee sanctuary and nursery to a unique tree species normally not found in Southeastern Minnesota. Remnants of the brewery are still visible. Foundation walls outline the massive structure of the brewery. Nestled in the center of the foundation is the entrance to the sixty-seven foot deep cave that once held barrels of beer and can be accessed by canoe only. Hops have been located on the property and are believed to be ancestors of those raised to make the beer once stored in the cave. The pond that provides access to the cave was dug out in the early 1990's to create a fish out for the Spring Falls Trout Farm that used to exist across the highway. Some of the original brood stock still exist and continue to naturally stock the pond. It is not uncommon to see fish that are five to ten pounds in size. We do not allow fishing from our pond. The residents house is built to scale to the original brew master's house. While the house is only twenty-four years old it looks as though you have taken a step back in time. The name Shady Rest was given to the house by the Brew Master's wife. We thought it was appropriate to keep the name alive. Shady Rest Acres is comprised of twenty-three acres of beautiful woodlands and pasture that are protected forever in the Minnesota Land Trust. The pasture is home to Scottish Highlander cows, two miniature donkeys, five sheep, four goats, honey bees and a flock of chickens. Scottish Highlanders were selected for both their grazing and browsing abilities. They are very docile and make excellent pasture mates to the smaller species sharing the pasture. The cows are excellent forest managers. They clear out invasive species such as Honey Suckle, Buckthorn, and Barberry which can often be difficult to manage. A guided tour with the host can be taken to meet the pasture animals. The forest is comprised of many tree species. Some are unique in that they normally do not grow in this region of Minnesota. The yellow birch is a species normally found in Northern Minnesota. It's bark is golden in color and glistens when the sun hits it just right. We have a cluster of several yellow birch including one that is so big that the bark no longer looks golden but instead is grey and very rough. Years ago the largest of these trees made excellent wood for turning bowls. Blue Beech (musclewood) can also be found on the property. As the name indicates the bark is shaped like muscles. Songbirds and some other species will use different parts of the tree as a food source. Towering white pines also speckle the landscape. Mother pine requires at least two humans arm lengths to encircle the whole tree. She is a favorite resting spot for the barred owl. There is oak, elm, maple, ceders, poplars and numerous other species. Honey bees are an integral part of the landscape. We partnered with a friend and started raising honey bees two years ago in order to do our part to keep pollinators thriving. Their hives are located in the pasture where it has the perfect amount of early morning sun to get them moving and afternoon shade to balance out the summer heat. It is not uncommon to see them pollinating garden plants, trees and wild flowers around the property. One of their favorite feeding spots is the acre and a half prairie which offers a range of plants including big blue stem, wild indigo and baby blue stem, to name a few. Not only are honey bees essential to the food chain but they also provide a very enriching experience when they are observed moving about their hives. There is nothing more relaxing and fascinating than watching these amazing creatures.
