Nice spot with a concrete pad not too far from 31. A bit of road noise, but it quieted down at night. I was there for a quick stay, so, unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to enjoy the trails.

The main road in (12 Mile Road) was way more rugged than I had expected. That being said, the site was very remote and extremely peaceful. You can probably make it in (as others suggested, come in from the west off Hemlock) with 2WD, but I was glad I had 4WD for peace of mind.
Also, the site it beautiful! The electric hookup was super convenient. The shower appeared to be hooked directly to the well water line. However, there was a heater there ready to be installed. We used my solar shower which was decently warm.
There are plenty of trails on site and my dog had a blast being off leash the entire week. We did venture into Hungerford for a much longer hike. There was a super nice couple there our first night, but we had the place to ourselves the rest of the week. What a gem of a site. Would love to have a group camp there in the future.

We loved camping at Sandy Fern. It was very private at quiet. We loved it because it was like boondocking, but with full hookups! The site is huge and is a pull through, so no issue getting into it. They also have a wonderful fire pit and horse shoes. We had a great time and highly recommend if you like piece and quiet.

I stayed one night in my camper van, a 2wd Ram ProMaster 3500. Definitely approach from the west (from Hemlock), not from the east as there's a long, sandy ascent that really requires 4wd this way; my van didn't have a prayer of making it, and it's a long way to back out but there's no choice 'cause there's no way to turn around. Come from the west and you're fine!
The site is really great. I was the only inhabitant, but there are multiple electric hookups all around the big fire ring. Pretty cool to have electric way out in the woods...that had to be a major project getting wires run. There's a very clean porta john on site too. For my night here, I had total privacy, excellent stars, and quiet - definitely will return.

Camp Sandyfern completely exceeded our expectations. From firewood to WiFi, everything we needed was right there—and honestly, we weren’t expecting that level of comfort! The hosts were incredibly thoughtful, checking in occasionally via text just to make sure we were doing great. They also provided clear, easy-to-follow instructions that made getting there and settling in a breeze. We stayed for 3 nights and genuinely wish we had booked 5—it was that good. A perfect blend of nature and convenience. We’ll definitely be coming back

AWESOME base camp for trail riding at Hungerford. The campsite was huge, flat, and private, with water and electricity. What more could you ask?? Very quiet. Perfect balance of sun and shade. Plenty of room for the horse trailer, travel trailer, and portable corral.
My dogs were in heaven exploring the property and we felt completely safe letting them do so. No place for them to get in trouble.
We really appreciate that Steven was so quick to respond when our other reservation fell through. He saved our vacation!

Where to go
Muskegon State Park
Here, you’ll find a mix of sandy shoreline, tree-covered dunes, and sports adventure tracks. Climb to the highest point in Muskegon county to enjoy a panoramic scene at the blockhouse, a viewing station built in the 1930s. Designated campsites start at $33 per night, with 247 sites across two campgrounds. There’s also archery, zip lining, rock climbing, and a wheel luge.
Dune Harbor Park
Located within Muskegon County, Dune Harbor Park was once a sand mine and the area has been recovering ever since. Now, the former mine site is covered in hilly forests, grass-covered dunes, and a man-made lake—an ecosystem that attracts bald eagles and monarch butterflies. The main activity here is hiking, and leashed pets are welcome, so be sure to bring a camera to capture wildlife as you stroll around the lake.
Ludington State Park
About an hour’s drive north of Muskegon is Ludington State Park Beach, which is nestled between Hamlin Lake and Lake Michigan. This park has over 20 miles of walking paths, three campgrounds, and many sand dunes for climbing. There’s also a historic beach house with interpretive visits and the Big Sable Point Lighthouse, which is open from 10am to 5pm daily for tours at a fee of $8 for adults and $5 for kids.
When to go
The best time to visit the Great Lakes is May, June, September, and October, which avoids both the hot summers and the cold winters. But winter can also be a good time to visit. For example, Muskegon State Park is great for water adventures in the summer. But in the winter, you can enjoy the Luge Adventure Sports park—which has one of only four luge ice tracks in the country and options for adaptive sports year-round.
Know before you go
- Mosquitoes can be particularly annoying during the month of June, so keep this in mind when booking a camping trip.
- In Michigan, a day fee applies to visit state parks, so it might be a better bet to purchase a Recreation Passport.
