Many folks that have visited our place refer to it as 'country living in the city'.
We are so blessed to live in this little piece of serenity just inside the city limits of Duluth.
Our home was once an abandoned house that sat for years until a friend mentioned to us that it might be going up for sale. We loved the location and rolled up our sleeves. Twenty years later we still marvel at the beauty around us and can hardly believe that we LIVE here!
Just down the road is a trout stream and beyond that was a popular farm that attracted many folks to this neighborhood for hay rides and sleigh rides. The farm has since retired its horses and closed its doors to make room for new homes, but memories live on in the beauty of the open fields. I often imagine the sound of horses and sleigh bells and people singing carols and then warming up around a toasty fire sipping hot cocoa. Some of those memories live on right here at Balsam Ridge (minus the horses). Over the years many groups of folks have enjoyed a sense of community in these back woods no matter the season. Campfires, kids catching frogs, neighborhood campouts, snow picnics, hair-raising toboggan runs, family campouts, spiritual silent retreats, a take-your-breath-away giant swing, and some tales too daring to mention are all part of the fun.
This is why we do what we do. We've been given much, and love to give back. It just wouldn't seem right to keep all this good to ourselves.

Bear Tree Homestead is nestled among the cliffs and ravines which drains the south face of Hogback Mountain located in Marquette Township Michigan.
Hogback Mountain is one of the larger rock formations in the Huron Range, a surprisingly rugged, and diverse region of low mountains carved by glaciers.
Each cabin is hand-built of log and stone using traditional Scandinavian building tools and techniques. The cabins have access to the pond, use of the canoe, a private fire pit, picnic table, charcoal grill and privy. Inside the cabins is a functional kitchen with dishes, flatware, pots and pans, so you can prepare meals onsite. Cabins also have table and chairs as well soft chairs/sofa sitting area, bookshelves with a variety of books, board games and puzzles, and covered porch in case of rain.
Our buildings, gardens, and pastures are integrated into the forested landscape and are not your typical homestead. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings, collect fresh eggs (when they are laying), lay in the hammock, listen to the sounds of nature and the barnyard or take an adventure hike, bike ride, snowshoe, or ski right out the door.
One of the most wonderful things we have to offer is the accessibility to thousands of protected acres surrounding us and the trails that bisect them. The property is on the North Country Trail, just over a Noquemanon Trail Network Forestville trailhead where access to year round recreation awaits. Hogback Mountain is just up the trail from the cabin with spectacular views of forest, mountains and lake superior.
We are located 8 miles from downtown Marquette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where there are many great restaurants, shops, and brewpubs.
However, once you drive into Bear Tree Homestead and settle in you will not want to leave.

Agate campsite is very generously sized and is all yours. Surrounded by a mix of poplar and birch with a few white pine sprinkled in, the main camp area is set back from the lake atop a 70' bluff with peekaboo views of Lake Superior. A short walk down a private path from your campsite gives you access to a beautiful Lake Superior beach to swim, skip rocks, search for agates, or just enjoy the panoramic views of the lake and the town of Duluth on the opposite shore.
Agate campsite previously featured a "look out point" that has been altered by the natural erosion of the red clay banks that comprise much of Lake Superior's south shore. While you can still access this area, doing so will require more effort and care, and we no longer allow camping on the point.
Superior Beach Camp located is 2.5 hours north of the Twin Cities and perfectly positions you to discover all the wonders of the Twin Ports. Explore this amazing area or stay at camp, set up your chair in the sand and take in the many moods of Mother Superior. Watch the ships come and go to the sparkly backdrop of Duluth’s city lights. The crackle of a driftwood fire on the beach provides the perfect soundtrack as you watch for shooting stars and the aurora.
Stock up on supplies and explore the charming industrial town of Superior, WI – 15 minutes from your campsite. Spend a day mountain biking the Duluth Traverse and touring the the wonderful local dining and tap room scenes of Duluth and Superior. Canal Park, downtown Duluth, is a 25 minute drive.
If you’d like to venture further, you could meander up the North Shore. Or keep it local and check out Bayfield and the Apostle Islands – only 75 minutes East. Stop through the charming lakeside village of Cornucopia on your way.
Or perhaps you’d like to experience world class trout fishing on the Brule River a half hour from Superior Beach Camp.
Maybe Parks are your thing: Amnicon Falls, one of Wisconsin’s most beautiful State Parks, is reachable in 10 minutes by car. Drive a half hour further to Pattison State Park and take in Wisconsin’s tallest waterfall. On the Minnesota side, the magic of Jay Cooke State Park is 30 minutes west (and puts you on the doorstep of legit white water rafting).

What more do you need than a private camping site and your 125' of your own pristine Lake Superior beachfront access? Well, there is the need of a fire ring so we added that, too! Everything else you will to bring to enjoy the million dollar views. Oh, and on the opposite side of the camping site is quiet slough which is great for smooth water paddling and exploring.
Down the gravel road about 1/3 miles are logging roads to hike, bike and explore. OHV trails are a couple miles away but check local maps for detailed information.
Intentionally being minimalists beyond a fire ring and picnic table, there is a port-a-john (of humble means) to make your stay comfortable. You will need to bring your own firewood if you desire a campfire.

Your host property is 13 acres between the Yellow Dog River, and Bear Lake, with frontage on both. The Yellow Dog River is a legendary trout stream, and many artists have found that the river satisfies their need for the wild. There are two cabin sites available, One overlooking Bear Lake with sunset views, and the other a cabin that was moved to the property in 1999 to preserve it.
Both sites share amenities such as the outhouse, communal fire pit and water, but the cabins are not in close proximity so everyone has their privacy. They are both rustic cabins having no running water, or electricity. A futon with mattress cover is provided in each cabin along with a table and chairs. See the individual site descriptions for more details.
We are 20 miles (app) north of Marquette, which is my home town. It is a destination for bikers, skiiers, and outdoor rec folk! There are so many things to see and do in Marquette, so make sure to plan enough time to check out the town! Also, just six miles to our north is historic Big Bay. A lumber town back in the day, it is full of history. Check out the Thunder Bay Inn, where parts of Anatomy of a Murder, starring Jimmy Stewart and Lee Remick were filmed. Don't miss going to the Lumberjack to see where the actual murder took place, either! You will find good eats and perhaps even some live music at either establishment. You'll also find everything you need in the way of groceries, and gas at Cram's General Store, where there's also a laundromat. Burns landing just north of the marina has the historic Burns family home renovated in a park setting, and a public beach access to mighty Lake Superior. This park has picnic tables and grills, and even a handicap accessible outhouse and trail to the lake.
Yellow Dog falls is a short drive on Co. Road 510, and on the way be sure to climb Thomas Rock overlook. There are new bike trails if you're into that as well! Stay awhile. You'll be glad you did!
We strive to offer peace and serenity to our guests, and love to share these woods with those needing tranquility and respite from a busy world. In this sensitive environmental area, we have only two sites to keep traffic down, enhance our visitors experience, and to protect the wildlife here.

Experience upscale camping–Glamping in the Forested Hills of Lake Superior. Sailor Springs is a small three-site campground located just two miles outside of the picturesque tourist town of Bayfield, WI. 2023 will be our first year of operation and we’re excited to host campers on the property and provide a unique camping experience.
The campground is spread out over 5 acres of forest that you’ll hike into from Bresette Hill Road. After parking at the trailhead, you’ll gather your bags and hike into your glamping site. The trail winds through the woods, leading you first to a valley where the seasonal Clark Creek runs through in the spring. The first two campsites are on the other side of this valley. The trail can be steep in spots and requires a moderate level of fitness and mobility to reach the secluded campsites. The third site is a bit farther into the forest, the little A-frame cabin, Anchor sits on the edge of the spring-fed Brickyard Creek that flows year-round.
We have many plans for the property and depending on when you stay, the campground will be in various stages of development. The campsites, trailhead / parking area, and trails are scheduled to be completed in early spring. We hope to add amenities such as a camp sauna and screened-in gazebo later in the 2024 summer / fall. Located in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the small town of Engadine. We are a few miles from Lake Michigan with the camp nesting beside the tranquil waters of Doe Creek. There is wildlife traveling through the property and at times make this their home.
This is a birding paradise for those birds migrating through and others building their nests and raising their babies here. Every spring is different those birds migrating, we see Indigo Bunting, Baltimore Oriole, Grosbeak and Bobolink. Occasionally we see just a flicker of color and wing and they are gone to another home. Actually nesting here are Hummingbirds, Cedar Waxwing and Sandhill Cranes, Every kind of Woodpecker is a daily sighting with the Pileated announcing his arrival that vibrates across the field and through the trees.
We are a hobby farm, we hay in July, garden during the summer and at times have a variety of farm animals. There is recreation galore including swimming, fishing, boating, skiing, hiking, and biking to name a few very familiar activities to this area.

Welcome to the Hemlock Ridge Homestead! This custom log home built in the early 2000's was a dream of mine since I was 8 years old. Our family lives here year round and absolutely love it. These sites are on a seasonal road so travel in and out can be impeded at times due to weather or external forces, such as tree falls, wash outs, etc. This is a self sufficient homestead in the making. Our garden has progressed greatly, and our fruit tree orchards are starting to produce. The free range chickens are fun and quirky, offering farm fresh eggs. We just opened our second site, the Prairieview Chalet 2024 summer. Both sites offer great amenities. The Acorn Retreat cabin includes a hot tub, gas weber grill and other amenities. The boujee outhouse is shared by both sites and is cleaned regularly.
The new Prairieview Chalet is an exceptional adventurers haven! It has all the things you want after a day(s) out in the wilderness, with amenities like a hot shower, fully stocked kitchen, linens and more.
Our property reflects our love of the land and space. We are always making improvements, such as the timber framed chicken coop. We now have a ping pong table for our guests, and still offer farm fresh eggs.
Our motto is to make every place better than we found it and hope our guests will do the same.
This is a zen, quiet place to heal, reflect and refill your cup of life:)

On the Minnesota side, the magic of Jay Cooke State Park is 30 minutes west (and puts you on the doorstep of legit white water rafting).

What more do you need than a private camping site and your 125' of your own pristine Lake Superior beachfront access? Well, there is the need of a fire ring so we added that, too! Everything else you will to bring to enjoy the million dollar views. Oh, and on the opposite side of the camping site is quiet slough which is great for smooth water paddling and exploring.
Down the gravel road about 1/3 miles are logging roads to hike, bike and explore. OHV trails are a couple miles away but check local maps for detailed information.
Intentionally being minimalists beyond a fire ring and picnic table, there is a port-a-john (of humble means) to make your stay comfortable. You will need to bring your own firewood if you desire a campfire.

Your host property is 13 acres between the Yellow Dog River, and Bear Lake, with frontage on both. The Yellow Dog River is a legendary trout stream, and many artists have found that the river satisfies their need for the wild. There are two cabin sites available, One overlooking Bear Lake with sunset views, and the other a cabin that was moved to the property in 1999 to preserve it.
Both sites share amenities such as the outhouse, communal fire pit and water, but the cabins are not in close proximity so everyone has their privacy. They are both rustic cabins having no running water, or electricity. A futon with mattress cover is provided in each cabin along with a table and chairs. See the individual site descriptions for more details.
We are 20 miles (app) north of Marquette, which is my home town. It is a destination for bikers, skiiers, and outdoor rec folk! There are so many things to see and do in Marquette, so make sure to plan enough time to check out the town! Also, just six miles to our north is historic Big Bay. A lumber town back in the day, it is full of history. Check out the Thunder Bay Inn, where parts of Anatomy of a Murder, starring Jimmy Stewart and Lee Remick were filmed. Don't miss going to the Lumberjack to see where the actual murder took place, either! You will find good eats and perhaps even some live music at either establishment. You'll also find everything you need in the way of groceries, and gas at Cram's General Store, where there's also a laundromat. Burns landing just north of the marina has the historic Burns family home renovated in a park setting, and a public beach access to mighty Lake Superior. This park has picnic tables and grills, and even a handicap accessible outhouse and trail to the lake.
Yellow Dog falls is a short drive on Co. Road 510, and on the way be sure to climb Thomas Rock overlook. There are new bike trails if you're into that as well! Stay awhile. You'll be glad you did!
We strive to offer peace and serenity to our guests, and love to share these woods with those needing tranquility and respite from a busy world. In this sensitive environmental area, we have only two sites to keep traffic down, enhance our visitors experience, and to protect the wildlife here.

Experience upscale camping–Glamping in the Forested Hills of Lake Superior. Sailor Springs is a small three-site campground located just two miles outside of the picturesque tourist town of Bayfield, WI. 2023 will be our first year of operation and we’re excited to host campers on the property and provide a unique camping experience.
The campground is spread out over 5 acres of forest that you’ll hike into from Bresette Hill Road. After parking at the trailhead, you’ll gather your bags and hike into your glamping site. The trail winds through the woods, leading you first to a valley where the seasonal Clark Creek runs through in the spring. The first two campsites are on the other side of this valley. The trail can be steep in spots and requires a moderate level of fitness and mobility to reach the secluded campsites. The third site is a bit farther into the forest, the little A-frame cabin, Anchor sits on the edge of the spring-fed Brickyard Creek that flows year-round.
We have many plans for the property and depending on when you stay, the campground will be in various stages of development. The campsites, trailhead / parking area, and trails are scheduled to be completed in early spring. We hope to add amenities such as a camp sauna and screened-in gazebo later in the 2024 summer / fall. Located in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the small town of Engadine. We are a few miles from Lake Michigan with the camp nesting beside the tranquil waters of Doe Creek. There is wildlife traveling through the property and at times make this their home.
This is a birding paradise for those birds migrating through and others building their nests and raising their babies here. Every spring is different those birds migrating, we see Indigo Bunting, Baltimore Oriole, Grosbeak and Bobolink. Occasionally we see just a flicker of color and wing and they are gone to another home. Actually nesting here are Hummingbirds, Cedar Waxwing and Sandhill Cranes, Every kind of Woodpecker is a daily sighting with the Pileated announcing his arrival that vibrates across the field and through the trees.
We are a hobby farm, we hay in July, garden during the summer and at times have a variety of farm animals. There is recreation galore including swimming, fishing, boating, skiing, hiking, and biking to name a few very familiar activities to this area.

Welcome to the Hemlock Ridge Homestead! This custom log home built in the early 2000's was a dream of mine since I was 8 years old. Our family lives here year round and absolutely love it. These sites are on a seasonal road so travel in and out can be impeded at times due to weather or external forces, such as tree falls, wash outs, etc. This is a self sufficient homestead in the making. Our garden has progressed greatly, and our fruit tree orchards are starting to produce. The free range chickens are fun and quirky, offering farm fresh eggs. We just opened our second site, the Prairieview Chalet 2024 summer. Both sites offer great amenities. The Acorn Retreat cabin includes a hot tub, gas weber grill and other amenities. The boujee outhouse is shared by both sites and is cleaned regularly.
The new Prairieview Chalet is an exceptional adventurers haven! It has all the things you want after a day(s) out in the wilderness, with amenities like a hot shower, fully stocked kitchen, linens and more.
Our property reflects our love of the land and space. We are always making improvements, such as the timber framed chicken coop. We now have a ping pong table for our guests, and still offer farm fresh eggs.
Our motto is to make every place better than we found it and hope our guests will do the same.
This is a zen, quiet place to heal, reflect and refill your cup of life:)

GORGEOUS PROPERTY!!
There was some firewood at the property, but it was far too windy to justify a fire.
Clear expectations for winter camping. Campsite was not accessible - road not plowed all the way to site. If road was plowed to the site, the site would’ve been accessible - there was very little snow actually at the site. Didn’t bother us to park at the adjacent property. Access to property is only available when coming from the north - road coming from south is not plowed.
Neighbors are close by on one side, but we did not encounter anyone.
We were also traveling with two pups - they loved having the beach to themselves!

I had a wonderful time at Linda and Darryl’s cabin. The trek to the cabin was a lovely snowshoe through the woods, and the cabin itself is gorgeous and so thoughtfully equipped. Directions are clear for both navigating and operating equipment inside the cabin, and the hosts were responsive and helped with a smooth check in. A perfect balance of adventure and creature comforts.

We are usually people who avoid campgrounds but this place was perfect for our snow camp trip!
We travel in a van so we didn’t camp at the campground, we stayed in the parking lot. However, It was still an awesome place to explore! There were people here and there but we mostly got the place to ourselves.
We got lucky to adventure the beach before a gnarly snow storm came in. It looked like we were visiting another planet! Quite an incredible experience. Only people out there and a memory locked in forever.
Once the snow came in it was absolutely stunning in a new way.
We don’t usually have a bathroom so the lodge was a nice change of pace for us. We were a little skeptical at first with the crosses but after reading their website and seeing their inclusivity we were grateful for their approach to religion. We respect religion that loves and respects all humans.
We will highly recommend this place to travel friends!

Second time here with a mixed experience
We are winter camping in our van and owner said he wouldn’t be able to get up there to see the snow conditions but we could park on road, cool, sounds good.
We get there and the plow stops before the property. 3ft wall we couldn’t pass. We wound up talking to the neighbors and some random man was in their home when they got there. Crazy! So naturally it felt super uncomfortable to ask if we could camp for the night right up to their driveway.
Turns out the owner of the camp spot was already there that day, knew about the plow issue and just didn’t tell us 🤷🏻♀️
That unusual experience did not take away from the stunning beauty this plot has to offer. The lake was frozen, dead silent and as the sun came up the lake came to life and you could hear all the water rushing underneath. Easily a locked in memory that I will never forget. Stars were amazing as always.

Beartree Homestead is a slice of heaven on earth. No better place to retreat in winter than Orchard Cabin :) The sauna & cold plunge setup exceeded every expectation. From the sauna’s master wood craftsmanship, to the availability of sauna accessories like towels and essential oils, to the pristine swimming hole carved in the frozen pond, we could not have asked for anything more. Weekend Trip to Bear Tree Homestead
Me and my boyfriend had an incredible time staying at Jill & Nick’s homestead. We stayed at the Pond Cabin in February, and it was magical! The cabin stays very very warm with the wood fired stove. Jill & Nick go above and beyond with ensuring things in the cabin are stocked, well taken care of, and clean. They are also very communicative and helpful. The location of the cabin was perfect, and the sound of the birds singing and roosters crowing in the morning is something I am missing after our stay. Will be back for sure!

Weekend Trip to Bear Tree Homestead
While I’m sure the experience is different in the summer vs the winter, it was a perfect snow globe getaway for us. From the narrow plowed roads to the cozy fire warmed rustic cabin to the picture perfect pond and property, it was a great experience for us.
We used it as basecamp and while it felt like you were in the middle of nowhere, the endless options within 15 minutes is a hard find and is perfect if you don’t want to travel far to enjoy your time.
We spent the evenings hunkered down in the dimly lit cabin and enjoyed just sitting and staring at the pond, ducks and immediate surrounding area.
A true winter wonderland for this stay and would love to return in the summer and experience what I would guess, a much different adventure next time. Thank you for having us.

The Orchard Cabin was like living in a fantastic dream - life slowed down and we had a chance to reconnect. The cabin is super clean, had comfortable beds, a warm masonry fireplace and electricity. Not difficult to find if you pay careful attention to directions. Kitchen was fully stocked with cooking equipment. Take advantage of the sauna!! We arrived during a blizzard (we have a 4x4) and Jill was a great communicator. The dogs were friendly and we were so glad to meet Jill and her husband. Also so grateful to be able to bring our pup.

Out time at the bear tree homestead was incredible. The cabin was well stocked with anything we could need, as well as books and board games for the quiet evenings. Jill and her family were absolutely wonderful and welcoming and they're dogs wondering the property were wonderful hosts.
