The land around Bear Lake was divided into 10-acre parcels in the 1970s using an original logging trail. Logging artifacts have been found on the property. The Yellow Dog River is a legendary trout stream, and many artists have found that the river satisfies their need for the wild. We are 20 miles (app) north of Marquette, which is my home town.  It is a destination for bikers, skiiers, and outdoor rec folk!  There are so many things to see and do in Marquette, so make sure to plan enough time to check out the town!  Also, just six miles to our north is historic Big Bay.  A lumber town back in the day, it is full of history.  Check out the Thunder Bay Inn, where parts of Anatomy of a Murder, starring Jimmy Stewart and Lee Remick were filmed.  Don't miss going to the Lumberjack to see where the actual murder took place, either!  You will find good eats and perhaps even some live music at either establishment. You'll also find everything you need in the way of groceries, and gas at Cram's General Store, where there's also a laundromat.  Burns landing has the historic Burns family home renovated in a park setting, and a public beach access to mighty Lake Superior.  Yellow Dog falls is a short drive on Co. Road 510, and on the way be sure to climb Thomas Rock overlook.  There are new bike trails if you're into that as well!   Stay awhile.  You'll be glad you did! We strive to offer peace and serenity to our guests, and love to share these woods with those needing tranquility and respite from a busy world. Unplug with us, eh!

Cozy UP Sunset Cabin
The cabin is away from the rest of the property and has a picnic table by it. She has a buddy heater in the cabin and carbon dioxide detector for safety. The walk up the hill is a little rough and needs some rocks or stairs put up as it get steep and slippery. The cabin is away from the fire pit and outhouse which means going up and down the hill. She offered to let us use the kayaks and canoe which was really nice. Overall a nice stay just be wary when it rains.

Comfortable cabin
Susan’s cabin is in a beautiful area north of Marquette- wooded and secluded. Her cabin is very clean and well built- we had good weather and the screened windows allowed fresh air. Solid picnic table to have morning coffee and evening cocktails at. Amenities included a lantern, small telescope, propane room heater and comfortable camp chairs. A place to charge phones and potable water. The privy was clean-a small walk from the cabin down a hill. We hiked yellow dog falls and enjoyed Marquette’s breweries. I would recommend- Susan was friendly and helpful.

We loved the cabin in the woods
Sue was an exceptional host and overall kind human being. She was welcoming off the get and it felt as if we had met many times before with how comfortable she made us feel. It was truly a magical escape for us and was exactly what my partner and I needed to be away from our busy lives for the first time in a while. This place is transcending and we are excited to come back and make more memories here.

A Wonderful escape!!
A very great experience for myself and the fam on our first trip to the U-P!! Sue is an awesome host; really wish we would have planned better to do an edible plant adventure - gonna have to make it up here again 😊 The cabin was a nice blend for differing levels of campers within our family, and having a couple kids it provided a nice shelter for the cooler moments.

Stunning location
Stunning location! Perched up on a hill overlooking the forest and small inland lake. We enjoyed hanging around camp taking in all of it's beauty and hiking nearby trails. The cabin is cozy and well-kept - perfect amount of space for two. Would recommend brining camping pads or mattress topper as the futon is quite hard. Will absolutely be hack!

Cold nights and warm memories.
One of the most beautiful campsites I’ve been able to stay at. Everything was perfect, no bad taste to the well water, listening to the river from our tent, hiking down to hidden beach, beautiful night skies and northern lights, kayaks on the property, I could name a hundred things that made this trip memorable. sue was the nicest host. people like her are few and far, She had power that we could use for air mattress cell phones etc. we had good cell service on the property. Between the host, the beautiful land that surrounds the Marquette area it would be impossible to say anything other then you need to check it out. I hope to come back again and again year after year. Thanks so much for having us out!!

Sue's place is exactly what we were looking for, an off grid recharge in beautiful nature (and dog friendly)! The cabin had everything we needed and we enjoyed having our privacy. The fire place was great for cooking food and hanging out and the river in the property was magical! We enjoyed the connivence location of the cabin to the hiking and climbing in the UP, as well as the beautiful beaches minutes away. 10/10 would recommend this cabin and will defiantly be coming back!

Marquette family staycation!
We had such a good time. So many memories were made! My husband got a huge fish! We met the neighbors on the lake who we’re so nice. The kayaks & the canoe were definitely a treat and we loved being able to use them. The kids swam in the river and found the coolest rocks! We really appreciated the communal area. We love this place so much and the host is the kindest, very wonderful!!

Private Hilltop Cabin.
The cabin is private and away from the host home and the tent camping spot. It is on top of a hill with an excellent view of the lake. The walk way up to the cabin is a bit steep but worth the effort. You also have to walk down the hill to get to Bear Lake. I was able to find a spot to put my kayak so I didn't have to go to the landing when I wanted to use it. Sue was accommodating and even gave me a weather report when a storm was coming.

Yellow Dog Perfection
This was our first HipCamp experience, and it was incredible! Sue’s directions to the site were very clear. She met us and showed us the amenities around her beautiful property. She went out of her way to ensure our experience was delightful. We were tent camping in a private spot on the bank of the Yellow Dog. When our mattress took on a slow leak she lent us two of her own. When the weather threatened severe, she encouraged us to stay in her home to make sure we were safe. We could have spent hours learning about her property, taking an edible wild-plant tour, and learning the history of the river. There are kayaks and a canoe available for use. Sue was always available if needed but never intrusive. We will come again! Thank you Sues! ❤️

Perfect spot in the woods
The camp was amazing. The amenities were perfect - campfire pit, darts, kayaks! It had everything we needed. Our site was located for the perfect amount of privacy from the owners' home, but close enough for convenient access to the amenities. Sounds of the creek we're calming at night, and Sue was such a great guide to the area and a gracious host!

6 out of 5 stars
This place is beautiful and peaceful and very close to nice hikes and the town of Marquette. We stayed two nights and wish we could've stayed longer. I also recommend talking to the host Susan. She has a wealth of knowledge about the history and ecology of the area, and definitely ask her about StopTheRocket – this is an issue we all need to be aware of.

Rustic Glamping& Kind Spirited Host
Sue is not only a fantastic host, but also a fascinating woman! We made a friend for life, and truly can’t wait to be back. The cabin was described as “Rustic Glamping” which hits it right on the nail. This site is close to everything, but far enough away that you still get lost in the wilderness. We really enjoyed making use of The Sue’s canoe and close proximity to Bear Lake and Yellow Dog River. We highly recommend visiting the Yellow Dog River Falls (if you can find it).

Best campsite!
We had the BEST time and will be recommending Sue’s campsite to all of our friends. It was the perfect spot for everything we wanted to do: camp, hike, swim, and kayak. Their home is beautiful in every way and Sue has been so thoughtful in the way she set everything up, from the lovely outhouse to the picnic table near the communal fire pit to the compost pile to the separate entrances to the river to the piles of wood for the fire to the perfectly positioned campsite near the river—it was all so lovely. She also has a spout for pottable water and a little charging station if your phone dies. We opted for her edible tour and learned (and ate!) so much from her. She even loaned me her books to read more while we were there. The town of Marquette is just a short 20 mile drive away, so we got great coffee in town and also excellent Thai food when we were too tired to cookout. Also lots of fun shops, art galleries, breweries and festivals there. Finally, the campsite is a short drive from multiple trailheads that take you to Lake Superior with several empty, sandy beaches. Can you tell we loved it here? If you’re looking for a great UP campsite, book Sue’s!

A Lovely Outdoorsy Stay
Susan was a very attentive and kind host. The property was well kept and had everything you could possibly need and then some and it wasn’t far from anything. She had brochures on local activities and sightseeing and even gave us some pointers on a couple of hidden gem areas to check out. Having the tent right on the Yellow-Dog River was a dream, listening to the water at night was so calming, it helped put me to sleep. We were able to visit with the other campers around the fire pit which made for good company. Susan was incredibly welcoming and sweet to the 3 dogs we had with us, remembered their names and even helped come calm them down when we were packing to leave (thank you for that Susan ☺️)! It was my dog’s first time camping and they did so well, thank you for your hospitality. I would love to stay on the property again. Highly recommend this relaxing retreat. Thank you for sharing your little slice of heaven with us Susan, it was magical!
