ATTENTION: 4 Wheel Drive is necessary to access this private gated campground. Site 1, The Falls Site, is limited to 2 campers who must hike approximately 1/4 mile to the site from parking. Site 2, The Garden Site, has vehicle access. This 80 acres has been family-owned for almost a century and has not been cut in that time. Many trees are mature. The southern half is home to 8 charcoal kilns which employed a community prior to ownership. The mountain is approximately 1.8 billion years old. Learn more about this land: This property has 2 tent sites at the western base of Hogback Mountain. Site 1, The Falls Site, is located on a spring fed stream.  The hike from parking to tent site is 1/4 mile on a well-marked hilly path.  Campers can park at the main property on County Road HD or on the Garden Road, and will need to pack supplies to their site.    Site 2, The Garden Site, is 100 feet from the stream and campers can drive to and park their vehicles at the site.  Current (summer 2022) County Road HD road conditions require 4-wheel drive due to storm washout. Future road grading may allow a 2 wheel drive or non-SUV type vehicle with lower clearance to pass.   Sites have picnic tables, fire pits, and a "toilet" structure, but waste must be burned or wag-bagged out.  Campers are also responsible for removal of all other waste.  The 2-foot wide stream provides water for washing, but is not considered potable, and use of filters or boiling water is recommended.  These isolated sites are beautiful and rustic and nestled in the midst of the Noquemanon Trail Network (cross country skiing and mountain biking) and North Country Trails and are approximately 2 miles from Lake Superior, Harlow Lake and Dead RIver. 2 kayaks/paddles/life vests and a 12 foot boat are available for camper use. First come, first serve. You transport.

Very secluded!
My friends and I had a fantastic time at Possum Creek. The property is lovely and Shawn puts a lot of care into ensuring that campers have a great stay. We had plenty of space for the 4 of us and our two dogs to stretch out and loved the quiet of the woods, even though the property isn’t terribly far from downtown. Shawn provided wood for us and is a great guy!

My husband and I went to Marquette for a long weekend and wanted somewhere cool to stay that wasn't a typical campground...Shawn's place was perfect! We stayed at site 1, right by the stream. It was so peaceful back there and our dog loved the stream! The hike back is no joke but well worth it!

We loved our site! Shawn was super nice and welcoming. We stayed at site 1 and although it was a little walk into the site, we still enjoyed it! The site itself is perfect! Right by the stream, secluded, and has a fire pit and picnic table. We definitely recommend staying here!

Shawn, thank you so much for hosting my solo time away! Appreciate your kindness and genorosity. I went camping with my Sprinter van + pup and we had a great time exploring the trails around the camp site, kayaking on a nearby lake, making fires and being in solitude. If you are looking for a place away from crowded campsites, this is for you! I've never been in a greener place and enjoyed experiencing the UP in a unique way.

Wooded Valley Stay
Shawn's retreat in the woods was a beautiful place to spend the weekend and a good jumping off point to explore Marquette. The area has good hiking and beautiful scenery. We enjoyed building a good campfire and listening to the creek as we fell asleep. Shawn was a generous host - thanks, Shawn!

This is the spot you want
I have stayed at quite a few places on Hipcamp and Shawn’s place was definitely the best. A quarter mile from Shawn’s 100 year old cabin, you are in the deep and sublime beauty of Upper Michigan. The spot is right next to a creek, and the soft babble of the brook is the only thing you will hear all night. Also, Shawn is truly a great guy. Helpful and friendly. He helped me get to the spot and was a great help and great guy. Could not say enough wonderful things

I just had the most wonderful weekend at Possum Creek Campground!! My partner and I stayed here while visiting the Marquette area. Shawn and his wife Patty were the sweetest and most accommodating hosts we could ever ask for. We got into town incredibly late, around midnight, and Shawn and Patty stayed up with us to make sure we were escorted to our site safely. They checked in on us and gave us yummy treats throughout the weekend and sent us off with a smile. My experience at Possum Creek reminded me why I loved living in the U.P. so much. I would recommend this stay to anyone :) Thank you guys so much for everything. We will never forget our trip up North!!

Shawn was an exceptional host, and it was a privilege to be able to stay on this beautiful land. The listing was detailed, and even so, Shawn took time to explain the workings of the site to us and was extremely generous with his facilities. It was also a personable experience, with Shawn making the effort to tweak our trip to fit our needs and remember our names. Aside from all that, the area was so lovely and serene, and it was refreshing to be completely surrounded by the woods. The creek running through the property, granite, and close proximity to hiking made it a truly special place. It's obvious that this land is respected and well cared for. My group and I feel great after the trip, and would love to return next time we're up in Marquette. Thanks for everything Shawn, we sincerely appreciate it!

Love it!
If you're looking for a totally secluded area to camp, this is the spot! 100% recommend camping here. Shawn is the most down to earth, cool guy ever! It is a little bit of a hike to the campsite, but Shawn helped us out if we needed stuff brought down or back up. Definitely will be coming back in the near future.!

Unique secluded quiet hiking
10/10!! I am honored to be the first guest to stay at Possum Creek Campground. Shawn was a super friendly host, had went above and beyond to make sure we had what we needed and that we were comfortable with being the fist campers there. Everything was perfect. Would recommend future campers to only bring the necessary equipment, you do have to park your vehicle a bit away and take a nice stroll into the most secluded campsite I’ve personally ever been to. But that was my favorite part! I hope plans match up in the future so I am able to stay here again. Thank you for this amazing experience to put in the books!!
