The Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary was generously bequeathed to the Kennebec Land Trust in November 2016 upon owner Kendra Wakefield Shaw’s passing. Its 108-acres feature historic cabins and 4000 feet of frontage on Cobbossee Stream in West Gardiner. The property’s coniferous and deciduous woods, vernal pools, and marshlands are important habitat for many species of birds, mammals, and plants.
In 2018, the Maine Cabin Masters renovated two of the stream-side cabins, which now serve as rustic getaways for Hipcampers and the like.
A small dock and canoes are available for use on the wide and deep flatwater stream!

It started years ago my sister and I stayed in a yurt at a campground in Oregon. That was it. I was hooked so I got one. There is something magical about staying in a round structure in the trees. My love of nature and comfort drove me to create this special place to be able to share it with others.
My TreeYurt is a platform built high in the trees so it essentially like a treehouse but with a yurt instead. It is located in the back part of my property surrounded by woods. In the spring there is a small stream running nearby. The land is somewhat sloped yet comfortable.
There are apple orchards nearby and many hiking trails a short distance away as well as Portland a mere 15 minutes.
The kitchenette has a small fridge a toaster oven a coffee maker a cook top with two burners pots pans utensils plates and bowls and kitchen towels as well a propane grill outside.
There is a wood stove for heating in the winter as well as a monitor heater that makes it very cozy for chilly nights. The yurt is insulated so it is a great year round glamping (glorified camping) adventure. I provide fire some wood for the wood stove inside but the camp fire wood for the outdoor fire pit is $8 per bundle.
The outhouse has a dry flush toilet and instructions at located in the yurt and out house. There is seasonal running hot and cold water (May through October) for the outdoor sink which is available for use for dishwashing and a bit of cleaning up. Also an outdoor shower is available for use May through October and biodegradable soaps and shampoo are provided. I provide gallons of drinking water and dishwashing water for the colder months inside the yurt with dish tubs sponges and soap.

Although the venue is one mile from our campsite these events can be heard as back ground noise from the camp site. The Mud runs are scheduled on the following weekends: 6/5-7, 7/3-5, 7/31-8/2, 8/28-30, and 10/2-4. My step Dad Bob ‘discovered’ the island in the 1970’s when he was escaping the rat race and looking to get ‘back to the land’. Over the course of three years he built the island house by floating cedar logs across the bay, using a come-along to bring the up to the land, debarked and prepped them for building and set about constructing his off-grid, solar powered home. All without power tools.
Both my Mom and Bob were ardent environmentalists and peace advocates. For 20 years they lived year-round on the island and only left when their ages made it difficult to continue cutting/splitting/moving/burning wood and just the ordeal of living so remotely. The large cabin has a welcoming front porch to enjoy the amazing sunrises over Streaked Mtn. 100 acres of privacy to hike, watch wildlife and just relax. Cabin has outside facilities. Off the grid-no electric or running water. Cell service is adequate. 1 gallon of fresh well water provided for drinking and 10 gallons for washing/cooking.
Bring your own linens for a queen size bed, twin bunk beds and a full pull out couch. 2 pillows are supplied with a pillow protective cover and pillow case which are washed after each guest. Pots, pans and utensils, are onsite which are washed between campers; trash bags, compost bags, paper towels, dish soap, dish towels and a 2 burner propane stove(green canisters needed) and an older propane table top grill are provided. Camp fire grill on site if you prefer cooking over open flame. There are some battery operated light switches and solar lights in the camp and outhouse. Get your "groove" on or hang loose here on a precious little island with a big bridge just off route one in the heart of Midcoast. Hundreds of guests report the perfect balance of upbeat fun and chill time and call our place and hospitality "magic", "amazing" and "holy guacamole!" It is a lovely spot just off the beaten path but close enough to access the frey. :)
I welcome my guests personally and have likely had a chat before you booked. I like to know what your hopes and priorities are around your stay before I accept so I can meet both of our needs. When you arrive, I will greet you and share a little history/tour of the place. I accept travelers between 4 and 9 pm but like all of us schedules fluctuate and we can roll some. There's a strong chance on an average Maine clear summer evening, I have the campfire going and the solar lights around the yard are charged for their evening gentle show.
All of the spaces I rent are bedrooms only. You walk a few steps/yards to my 5 bedroom home and access two showers and some kitchen use. I also have an outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen that is cute and for your use. It's fun to cook on the fire too! I prefer folks to limit cooking esp in hot weather but support healthier eating and may share some of my foraging tips. The rooms are equipped with plenty of linens and fan power. You will be cozy either way the temps go.
There is a lovely porch on the log home where you can sit and enjoy the sunset and lots of wildlife activity. The back yard has tether ball and lots of seating as well as the good sized fire pit with ghosts of hundreds of fireside chats gone by. I look forward to ours!
Next door there is a gravel road on a lightly traveled road for your walking or biking pleasure. I am happy to join you in a hilly roller coaster cycling experience and have a few bikes to offer up. I am a WWOOF host and have occasional "helpers" and you are welcome to explore my veggie and flower gardens.

FAQ: Our cabin is an off grid (very limited power, now way to charge or plug in AC devices) post and beam structure that we built 9 years ago. It has a full kitchen, wood stove, and screened porch. There is a large (150 gallon) tank of water for doing dishes and camp showers but we do not suggest drinking it. There is a generous supply of lanterns (both battery and inflatable solar) flashlights and string lights for lighting. We have wired lights that run off DC power when there is enough solar and we provide some battery packs for charging phones. We highly suggest bring some way to charge any of your personal electronics. There is no reliable way to do that in the cabin.
This is a small two story timber frame cabin off grid and secluded deep in the woods. It has a separate outhouse as well as shower stall to use the solar shower bags in. The cabin has a king sized bed in the loft with a child size fold down bunk above it; there is also a pull out couch on the first floor. As well as a kitchen, screened in porch and fire pit. Linen, dishes and utensils are not included please bring all that you need. There is a propane 4 burner stove with oven and solar shower bags. Trash and campfire wood is included. We are very busy with kids and work, we try our best to clean and re-supply between guests but it is not always possible, please let us know if something needs attention!

The farm is beautifully natural, peaceful, and full of amazing animals. We stayed in the Pasture View Tent, and it had everything we could have needed. The bed was comfortable, with fresh, clean sheets and towels. The tent was thoughtfully stocked with pots and pans, utensils, grill tools, wine glasses, cups, salt and pepper, paper towels, and so many little extras. It honestly had more amenities than many hotel rooms!
The outhouse was absolutely adorable, and we even enjoyed taking an outdoor shower, which made the whole experience even more special.
The owners are some of the kindest and most welcoming hosts we’ve ever met. Sandi took the time to introduce us to all of the animals, let us help feed them, shared wonderful stories, and even gave us the opportunity to brush and sit on a horse for the first time in our lives. It was such a memorable experience.
Brian is an incredibly talented carpenter, and his craftsmanship can be seen throughout the property—from the covered bridge and charming trail light posts to the sauna, cabin, and beautifully built tents. His attention to detail truly adds to the magic of the farm.

1 night at Hamilton Farm Rustic Getaway
Patti and Chris’s farm was so beautiful! The cabin was a work of art and waking up to the green pasture with birds singing all around was a dream. The hot shower was also clutch in the morning.
Chris was very kind, showed us around, and gave us recommendations for our visit to Acadia.
I recommend staying here for a nice peaceful, quiet stay!

Cary’s property was absolutely stunning, a work of art and love. We stayed in the cabin and were immediately transported into a gypsy caravan wagon dream- covered head to toes in tapestries. The attention to detail to everything little thing truly makes this place special and safe. Everything made it very easy to feel comfortable.

Lulu’s 100 Acre Woods is a lovely private retreat spot. Abundant peace and quiet with a beautiful view. Total privacy, no one in sight. My dog thrived being able to run free! There is even a trail behind the cabin leading up to a beautiful vista—a very nice sunrise spot. The road up to the cabin is an adventure; I had no problems in a Subaru Forester, just make sure your vehicle is high enough off the ground and can handle “off roading”. Once you get up to the cabin, you may well not want to leave. Linda has provided everything you might need, and was very welcoming. Directions are clear and she has maps of the property/nearby trails that are easy to follow. One of the best parts is the fresh mountain spring down the road. 💧🩵 As with all camping, prepare for insects. It’s a beautiful area to explore, and just as beautiful a spot to stay in place, unplug, and enjoy the peace. Thank you Linda for having us, and for sharing this amazing spot! Would definitely come again, I can only imagine the beauty of autumn! 🍂 🧡

Truly the best Glamping experience was provided! We really felt so much thoughtfulness went into preparing the cabin and loved talking with Sandi. Tucker is the friendliest pup, Drifter is the warmest barn kitty. We definitely want to visit again. Directions were clear, easy to find location.

Our return to Hockomock was just as spectacular as the first time. With our 8 month old son and 8 year old dog onboard, it was the perfect place to disconnect from the rest of the world and truly be with each other and nature. We spent most of our time at the cabin watching the tides, waking up with the sun, and kayaking alongside a seal while eagles soared overhead. Every day was in the 90s, but the breeze off the water kept us comfortable, whether we were relaxing on the deck or cooling off with a shower in the kitchen. :)
We only left twice during our three night stay, once for Mile Beach and once for downtown Bath to enjoy live music and food trucks.
A few helpful tips for future Hipcampers:
1. The mosquitoes can be intense on the walk in, so bring bug spray or a Thermacell. Once at the cabin they were much more manageable.
2. The hike to the cabin is part of the adventure. It can be challenging in the heat, but the destination is worth every step.
3. This is a true off grid experience, so come ready to embrace nature.
4. Kayak access depends on the tide and takes a little effort, but it is absolutely worth it.
5. Rolling bags or sturdy totes make hauling your gear much easier.
If you are looking for an adventure and are not afraid to fully embrace nature in this dreamlike setting, this is the place for you!

Wow, what an absolute gem of a spot. We had such a wonderful time camping in the pasture view tent. I was with my two year-old twins. They had a marvellous time. Sandi is such a generous and thoughtful host. She showed the kids all of the wonderful animals, took them for a ride on the golf cart and showed them how to collect eggs from the chicken coop. The camp setup is perfect, very easy and low stress. 10 minutes from a really great swim spot. A perfect vacation.

If you don’t enjoy amazing views, a porch that you won’t want to leave, relaxing atmosphere, cozy cabin, inviting firepit, and a perfect getaway that you want to be adopted into the family so you don’t have to leave, then this is not the place for you. The trail up to the overlook is well marked. The cabin is awesome, the property is relaxing, and watching the weather changes over the mountains is amazing.
