Tucked among spruce, fir, and birch on Sunshine Island in Deer Isle–Stonington, Four Acre Woods began more than 60 years ago as a small, family-run campground known as Sunshine Campground. Travelers from across the world visited this quiet island forest, drawn to its raw beauty and the peaceful energy that generations before us had loved and cared for. The campground eventually closed in the 1990s and sat untouched for over 15 years—its trails, clearings, and old campsites slowly reclaimed by the woods. The land waited, quietly, for someone to bring it back to life. In the years that followed, Caleb, a longtime local operator on the island, took interest in the property. Recognizing both its history and its potential to offer people a deeper experience of Deer Isle’s natural beauty, he began the process of carefully restoring and reopening the land. Working season by season, Caleb rebuilt the sites, added new infrastructure, re-established utilities, and designed a campground that honors the land’s roots while offering a comfortable, modern, and nature-forward experience for today’s guests. In July 2020, the property reopened under a new name: Four Acre Woods. Porcupine Creek Rustic Camping sits in the middle of our 50 acre Tree Farm. Campsites sit at the edge of small open fields are are spaced to give you the feeling of having your own space. We currently have two camping sites a Tree House and Camping Tent. The camping-related structures on our property are built with wood harvested from our tree farm and milled on-site. Deer regularly visit, the birds are constant company and other critters roam. Accommodations include rest rooms, shower rooms (sites come with solar shower bags) fire pits and campfire wood. We loved staying in our little cabin for the week! Plenty of room for two of us and all our supplies, firewood and ice were available on the property and checking in/ out was a seamless process! Bathhouse was clean and readily available at all times! Would absolutely stay here again or recommend to a friend.

Weekend Trip to Four Acre Woods Island Campground

My son (age 12) and I have been to Four Acre Woods for the last 2 years and really enjoyed it. The first year we tent camped and this year we stayed in the yurt. The campground is very small, which we like and each site is unique. Lots of amenities for such a small campground, they really think of the little things that keeps camping comfortable. The yurt was wonderful and the campsite has everything you need (we brought too much stuff). Just bring yourself, clothes, and food and you are good to go. We are fairly local, so it is a great weekend getaway, but we don't really explore the area when camping. If you want to experience the downeast Maine coast away from the more touristy spots, this is where you want to go.

1 night at Porcupine Creek Rustic Camping

I can’t wait to come back! My boyfriend and I absolutely loved this. The set up was perfect, Jeff and Cathy have gone above and beyond with making sure their guests feel comfortable and enjoy their stay. We stayed in the Owls Nest, it was super cozy. There was a whole outdoor kitchen set up with all the kitchen supplies you need. They supplied fire wood, kindling and fire starter! They had jugs of water, a very nice clean bathroom set up. There is a lot of cute animals around too, we saw a few deer, and a porcupine with its baby! We were so impressed with Jeff and Cathy’s hospitality and can’t wait to come stay in the Owls Nest next season :)

We loved staying in the yurt! It was perfectly private, adorable, and we were surprised by the incredibly comfortable beds. This was the perfect size for our family of 5. The community room was warm (literally had a wood stove going at 6am!), stocked with coffee and hot chocolate, and hosts and the space alike were welcoming and helpful.

We absolutely loved our stay here! The cabin was cozy with everything we needed for cooking right on hand. Super easy to get to, which made the trip more relaxing. The location was prime, about 100 yards of waterfront to enjoy, with sunny mornings and shady afternoons that were perfect for hanging out. Our two dogs had the best time. We’d absolutely come back!

Jeff & Cathy are kind and lovely hosts. Their campground is wonderful. It has everything you could want and need at a campground. It was awesome to catch up, hike, and cook with one of my childhood friends in rural Maine without having to worry about setting up camp. I’ll take staying at this campsite over staying at a hotel/motel or a large campground. I’ll definitely be back.

We really enjoyed our stay in one of the domes at Four Acre Wood. The tent was comfortable, and the campground had everything we needed. Conary Cove is a must-visit and we were pleasantly surprised by the selection at the local Hannaford in Blue Hill. We would definitely stay here again, and recommend it to friends.

We had a great two night stay at Four Acre Woods Campground. We stayed in the yurt, which we found cozy and perfect for our needs. The site itself was well appointed with two hammocks, a cute fire pit and plenty of seating around the campfire area. Our group loved the little community center for coffee in the morning, it was easy to purchase dry wood to burn (across from site) and we all felt like the bathrooms were clean and a short walk away.

I have nothing but good things to say about our experience here! It was a particularly hot week when we went and Cathy was gracious enough to come each day and swap our rechargeable fans with hers so we could stay cool. Jeff & Cathy made us feel incredibly safe + welcomed and gave great recommendations for places in the area. Aside from amazing hosts the campground itself was beautiful, well maintained, and serene. The hard work and love they have put into this place does not go unnoticed. The bathrooms and sink station were the nicest I’ve seen at a campground before and decorated so cutely! Overall a beautiful place I would recommend to anybody and would love to go back :)

Lots to do all within 20 minutes of your campsite. Lots of great restaurant choices too. Our favorite was the Burnt Cove Lobster Boil…highly recommend!

I appreciate 4 acre's gracious atmosphere ; the hosts are both responsive and unintrusive. The Seal Cove geodome is both stylish and comfortable ; thoughtful details like the pour over coffee cone and stoneware dishes are a treat! The area's natural beauty is easily accessible from the campground, all in all a perfect spot!
