Base Camp is a 21 acre modern glampground + RV Park, trailhead, and bike park located in Humboldt.
We have beautiful tiny home cabins, mini A-frames and full service pull-through RV hookups. Located in Humboldt, KS at the trailhead to the Southwind rails-to- trails. Base Camp features a quarry pond for fishing and small watercraft's, large open fields for recreation and a bike skills course perfect for beginners and seasoned riders alike. Currently, we do not offer tent camping.
Our RV spots are located in our paved parking lot. Each rental includes water, 30 and 50 amp electric and sewer hookups.

If you're up at sunrise, you'll see Ken bringing the cows up to the barn for milking (April through November). Its pretty quiet here, except for the subtle noises of wildlife. (Fair warning: if you're in a tent, you will probably hear the milking machine kick on at 6:30am.) We're also proud to be a smell-free farm because all animals live out on pasture. There are killer sunrises and sunsets here. It is a private camping club which is made up of 10 waterfront acres along the main channel/current of the majestic Missouri River. It is about 2.5 miles SW of Wathena, KS and is bordered by Walnut creek to the south and a small creek just north of the boat ramp. We do not have staff on site on a scheduled basis. Campground and riverfont access is for registered guest only, there are no public facilities.
Larger RV sites with electric only (30 amp camper plugs). The nearest RV dump station is at Love's Truck stop in St. Joseph 14 miles to the East. Each site has its own fire ring. You may bring your own wood or buy some at Casey's in Wathena. There is a hydrant near the elevated deck which is supplied with city water in case you need to fill jugs.
Feel free to fish and enjoy shore fires along the banks of the Missouri River, but do so at your own risk and supervise minors at all times. Remember to bring your own fishing gear for an immersive experience by the water. Experience the tranquility of the riverfront and make the most of your stay.
There is a fairly steep boat ramp past site 10. There are public boat ramps that are maintained in nearby Elwood, St. Joseph (near the Casino) and Atchison. This ramp can only be used by registered campground guest only and users assume all risk to themselves and property.
The campground is at the original steamboat landing and downtown of the now ghost town of Palermo, KS. Nearby town of Wathena (2.5 miles) is the site of the beginning of the California Trail where settlers were let off at the river NE of town (area and trail is marked) and headed west. The Pony Express started at nearby St. Joseph, MO (9 miles) and passed through the area. It has a museum. Wathena has Star 36 Diner (breakfast, lunch and supper), the legendary Dairy Barn (ice cream and food options), VFW bar, quilting store.

We really enjoyed our weekend at Basecamp. We were able to take an official tour during the Big Kansas Road Trip and learned about the history of the campground and all of the amenities. It’s amazing! We will be back.

Base Camp in Humboldt is so peaceful and relaxing. The grounds are pristine. We used the full hook-ups in the RV area. Directions are very clear on how to find the property and how to use the amenities.

Amazing experience with an RV for our family of 4! We rented an RV for the 1st time and found Base Camp as a comprehensive site that had every amenity you could think of. There is full hook-up for RV's and full service cabins. The property is beautiful and extremely well kept. Very relaxing. It is conveniently located walkable to downtown Humboldt. During the cold days, there was a space to hang out with tables, chairs, games, and a pool table. There are bikes to use on the trial, rentable e-bikes, and firewood available for purchase to use in the innumerable fire pits across the property. The kids spent a lot of time on the pond in kayaks and paddle boats. Additionally, while we were there, there was a wood-fired sauna we used which was incredible. The best part of the experience was getting to know Jon. He is an AMAZING host. So kind and informative to our family. He made us feel truly at home. We will 100% be back!
