Welcome ; Located in southeast Minnesota's Driftless region of hills, valleys, fields and forests, we are a grass based working dairy farm with over 100 acres of woodland, including an extensive trail system and campsites in our wooded acres. What makes this woodland special is it's quiet, secluded setting and over 6 miles of hiking / skiing trails. Our farmstead sits three quarter of a mile off the paved county highway on our well maintained gravel driveway. Each of our campsites are secluded from the others with their own sawdust compost toilets, picnic tables, fireplaces, and firewood. Two of our sites require 4WD with a minimum of 6 inches ground clearance to access, and two are accessible with 2WD. If you do not have 4WD we can help transport your gear while you enjoy the walk in. There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. At night it is common for owls to visit the campsite area to say hello, and coyotes talking in the distance. The winding trails through 100 acres of woodland offer a variety of woodland habitats, from Old growth Maple to mixed hardwood, to dense brush, to the edges of open pastureland. Bring your fat bike or mountain bike for an enjoyable ride. For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing or snowshoeing / hiking on the property. However the Rock Bottom Cabin is our only heated and insulated site and is available for winter booking. Winter access is walk in only with snow on the ground or in the forecast. We can help transport gear. This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm and guided tours of the dairy and cattle are available when scheduling allows. Children 12 and younger are free at our campsites. No need to be counted as guests , but please let us know when requesting to book. We do not allow non-booked visitors to our campsites due to the secluded, remote location, and accessibility.

IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION: The river edge erosion wall construction is complete. The area is being prepared to have additional river sites added sometime in 2026 depending on vegetation growth. The entire Beach (R3 & R4) will be closed to Campers starting October 1. This is due to hunting season starting. The campground and rental house will open about May 15, each year. The English Pale Campground is located along the Black River in Jackson County, 1 mile west of the Village of Melrose. The entire property only allows guests and occupants who are 21 or older. Sites/house can be booked 6 months in advance. The main campground is 70 feet above the river. We have 5 rustic (no hook-ups) RV/Travel Trailer/Tent sites, a fully furnished “Manor” House, a travel trailer as well as 2 rustic beach sites that are located along the river. The property is a total of 70 acres, which includes the 4+ acre beach, a mile of river front and trails through the woods that connect them all. The English Pale opened in 2021 and is a developing property. In late summer of 2025 an erosion wall was built along the Black River. This included clearing of a section of the forest, building a gravel access road and an riprap river wall to prevent further erosion. Since 2016 over 60 feet of the riverbank has washed away. Our property offers a reasonable expectation of privacy and we do not offer day passes as our target guests are campers. We are an adult only property, but not a nudist campground, as that is not our central theme. We do not prohibit our guests from nudity for the purpose of sunbathing on the beach, campsites or sundeck, but nudity is not allowed in general common areas. Part of our nature is allowing discreet nudity for tanning purposes. While we target couples for time together, singles and groups are welcome. We have valleys with three ridges, total elevation is about 300 feet from low point to high point. We have two springs on the property that are the source for a small unnamed creek that feeds into Trout Creek and then the Kickapoo River.  The property has walking paths in the grassy pasture areas in the valley (partially mowed), unmowed trails up and down the hillsides and on the ridges, and a high bluff overlook. We are between the towns of Soldiers Grove and Readstown, 2 miles from the Kickapoo River and US Highway 61 on paved roads.  There are public restrooms with showers a 5 minute drive from site in Soldiers Grove, where there is also an RV dump station. Beautiful, secluded campsite with a babbling brook running through!! The region is gorgeous in the fall. The outhouse was clean and well kept. Tai + Stella’s visitor guide and map were very informative and easy to follow. Logan brought us firewood and allowed us to enjoy the area in peace. Highly recommend if you’re looking for an escape out in nature.

Big Trout Creek site did not disappoint! We had everything needed for a perfect stay and buying firewood right there was very convenient. Jolene checked in with us a couple times which was nice as well. Our pup wasn't sure about the cows the first day but by the end of our stay made peace with them!

Beautiful land. Pull through spots right next to a corn field. Wonderful farm store! Has a path to walk next to fields and back in the woods. Very reasonably priced!

Weekend Trip to New Hartford trout camp

As stated in every other review, the camping spot is very scenic, nature filled and beautiful. Gregory is great as a host as he let us have our privacy, but checked in as we were driving or walking by. Just a note to get to the site: when you pull in the driveway, turn left and drive in front of the house. Then right after the house take a right and that trail leads you back into the woods by the river. I think he has a map that works great. Lacrosse and Lake Crescent are not far from this site if you wanna make a trip into town. The site itself is very open no backing up as needed. Just pull in where you wanna be. Big enough for a couple of campers and tents.

We camp a lot, and this is a very unique place. Complete privacy, zero light pollution, gorgeous topography, and wildflowers everywhere, accessible with perfectly mowed trails throughout. We used the dump station at The Barn Resort just a mile or so away. Or you could dry camp here since there is a porta potty and hose for basic washing. Star gazing is incredible along with abundant wildlife sightings! Highly recommend. Neil is very friendly and attentive.

Friction Farm owners have done an outstanding job creating a small collection of campsites with water abd electricity nestled into their family farm's barn yard and beautiful corn field. Very pastoral and totally relaxing, while providing all the basic comforts of home.

A Phenomenally Beautiful Campsite with a lot of Area to Set up your Camp. The Streams were Gorgeous and Had Beautiful Sunsets. Gregory Drove to our Campsite in the early morning, waking us up, to Advise my Husband and Myself of the Rising Waters and the Next Huge Storm Surge coming our way! This is Unheard of, That A Man not only Checked out his Land, he Informed us of the Big Storms and Concerning Weather On the Front. Also, Delivered our Farm Fresh Eggs to our Campsite! Highly recommended!

Round Mound is an excellent campsite. Beautiful views, very private, and Mike and Joan and done a wonderful job taking care of all the little things to make it great (very nice and clean outhouse, firewood, trail map, drinking water, etc.) Mike greeted us and took us to the site - he was helpful, friendly and very accommodating. I highly recommend staying with Mike and Joan!

3 nights at New Hartford trout camp

Long story short: great site, great host, 100% recommend. BIG site. Lots of room for either multiple tents or just choosing a perfect location for a single tent. Very level ground as well. The trout stream is small, but very fishable. I had a blast fly fishing the water right at the campsite, as well as the mile of public water upstream of the site. The site is private, but I wouldn’t call it “secluded”. There are a couple other houses and a main road nearby. I would compare the general noise level similar to what you’d find in a suburban neighborhood. In my opinion, this is actually more acceptable than what I’ve found in popular state park campgrounds, which often have “party noise” later into the night, and much closer neighbors making noise. Once the sun goes down, this site is quiet and sleep came easy. I opted to have an early check in time as well as a dozen fresh eggs from the camp host’s chickens and ducks. I had fresh duck eggs for breakfast for the first time…they were great! The camp host couldn’t have been better. Just a regular guy that didn’t interfere with my stay at all. Communication through the app was very good and really all that was needed. I did speak with him briefly in person and it was a pleasant conversation.

We highly recommend this site!! This site is for the camper that loves wide open spaces, gorgeous views, with the space for your dogs to be off leash. After a night watching fireflies and listening to the frogs, we woke to a gorgeous sunrise coming up over the valley. We hiked around the property’s 24 acres on well maintained grass trails through wildflower meadows. It was a warm fall day so we went down to the river to set our chairs and toes in the water for a few hours. We spent time in the nearby towns of Lanesboro and Harmony for Amish shops, antiques, food and drinks, and grabbed fresh apples and pastries at an apple orchard. We enjoyed our stay at Lanesboro Acres and plan to visit again soon!

Weekend Trip to Driftless Haven 125 Acres & Creek

I had an absolutely incredible stay at this Hipcamp. It felt like I had been transported to the mountains, not Wisconsin! The views in the driftless region were stunning. I reached out to host Andy in advance, and he graciously let me stay in the fenced dog park area, which featured a crystal-clear spring-fed pond. The trails on the property were amazing, perfect for exploring with my dogs, and the location itself is out of this world. It's right in the heart of Amish country, with Amish horse and buggies riding right past the campsite. Andy was fantastic, welcoming, helpful, and full of great local recommendations. If he was working near the campsite he kept me informed, but otherwise gave me my privacy and it really felt like I had the place to myself. Andy even loaned me a corkscrew after I forgot mine. Although the listing says no cooking equipment, the site was set up with a campfire grill grate which was so helpful for cooking over the open fire. I purchased the wood add on and Andy provided more than enough wood right beside the fire for two days. He also suggested a nearby Amish home-based bakery, which had some of the most delicious baked goods I’ve ever tasted. Every detail of this stay was thoughtful, peaceful, and memorable. I only wish I could have stayed longer! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a serene, stunning, and unique camping experience.

The whole experience was nothing but GREAT! We were motocamping and the site was easy to get to on our bikes had everything we needed. They think of everything a camper may need in terms of wood for cooking and campfire to water for both washing and drinking plus a nice sink area if you had dishes to wash. The outhouse is clean. Would highly recommend this place to others, the host were also very nice and made sure our stay was good.

This was a beautiful spot to spend a fall weekend with friends. The setting is beautiful, with plenty of space to spread out. We loved walking the groomed paths near the creek, hanging by the fire and exploring the area.
