We are a small family farm that grows sweet corn and pumpkins. We are two families that have become great friends and use this property for growing a small crop each year, as well as for friend and neighbor gatherings, and lots of fun and memories for our kids.
In the summer, we love spending time hanging out at our tiki hut, which we have lovingly nicknamed “The Smut Hut.” “Smut” is a mushroom-type delicacy that sometimes grows on sweet corn, as we have learned. So, if you are looking for time overlooking a creek or pond, fishing, hiking, sitting around a fire, and relaxing, we invite you to come and stay with us. Sometimes we may be there hanging out, picking corn or pumpkins, or grilling with friends, and we hope you might join us. Or you may have the place to yourself to watch the birds and beavers, and if you’re lucky, you may spot the turtle that lives in the pond.
We have two RV sites with electric hookups available, and several tent sites. Many have fire rings and picnic tables. We also have grills and a portable toilet available for guest use. Firewood is available for purchase, hand-chopped by our teenager, and during the in-season, we will have sweet corn and pumpkins available for purchase. Please be sure to bring cash if you want to purchase firewood, corn, or pumpkins. Thanks!!

Sugar Grove Family Fun Center up the road. Goat Yoga and Wholly Bean Coffee close by. Local forest preserve has toilets (within driving distance and use while open before sundown) or bring your own porti-john (I find a bucket and a garbage bag do wonders). Camp with your dogs and horses!! Animals welcome (trails at the local preserve). Set up a temp spot for them with owner permission. We have the space. There is riding at the forest preserve right around the corner and a local farm spot where you can call and pet horses. We have a swing set and small child play sets. A trampoline. A hammock. Y’all are more than welcome to use it. Just be respectful and make sure your children do not harm our land, animals, gardens, or themselves. 💕🙏 Again offering substantial fire wood bundles for 7 dollars a bundle. New egg and farm stand added this year. Two new picnic tables added. Well water available upon request for those that have travel tanks to refill (ask the owner and schedule a time to use the hose).

The magical woods is located along the bridle trails behind our horse farm. Sorry, we do not offer trail rides as we have show horses. However you are welcome to arrange a visit to meet the animals when you arrive. We have horses, a miniature horse, a mule, a miniature sheep and a very sweet goat named Hairy. There are about 30 chickens wandering the yard all day and we have 4 dogs and 3 cats that are always around. They are used to other dogs.
At night we have a lovely lullaby of owls, night birds, insects and frogs. Sometimes you can even hear sounds from the Illinois River and railway miles away. Barges, trains (not many) tug boats, and the interesting sounds that come with them. Listen carefully, can you tell them apart?

Welcome to our beautiful property! This is a very special place, located an hour from Chicago and only minutes from the west suburbs, you will be transported to another time! This has to be the best “swimming/ fishing hole” in Chicagoland and you can have it all to yourself.
The property features 20 acres of woods, prairie and an 8 acre lake!!! The lake is crystal clear because it’s so deep (reportedly 125 ft) and is sandy on the bottom. We created a massive beach area with many camping spots to choose from. The kids will love exploring the trails on foot and on bike. Everyone will love lounging under the umbrellas on the comfy chaise lounges and enjoying the views.
You won’t want to leave, but if you need to restock, there a gas station 1/4 mile away and full service grocery store and restaurant under a mile away. We even get pizza delivered! There’s a nice driveway of gravel that leads to a nice open field for RV campers. Tent campers can continue to the beach and set up in style.
The property was once an active quarry and was then basically abandoned for 40-50 years. Nature took over over, Trees matured, the stocked lake grew some massive fish. A few years ago we started camping out there and just loved it. We’ve worked hard to make it amazing and we want to share it with you.
Be sure to bring garbage bags and take your trash with you. Leave it as nice or nicer than you found it. Thanks.

Mary was a great host. Directions were clear. Property has a small lake or a large pond, whatever you call it. She had wood available for burning and a camper with a bathroom. The skies were dark to see the stars at night & there were plenty of trees to be in the shade or I had the option to be in the sun. It was quiet & my pup was able to explore a bit off leash. She brought us out a thank you card & a vase with I’d assume flowers from her garden. Thank you for sharing with us. 10/10 would recommend.

Great little South Dakota camping experience. I stayed here for the night while traveling through and really enjoyed it. The campsite was peaceful, easy to access, and right along the river, so I was able to do some fishing while I was there. Having a fire pit at the site was a nice touch and made it feel like a true outdoor camping experience.
The owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the Hipcamp manager I spoke with was just as helpful and pleasant to deal with. You can tell they genuinely care about making sure people have a good stay.
The price was very reasonable, especially for the location and experience. If you’re traveling through South Dakota and want a simple, peaceful place to camp, fish, and enjoy the outdoors without spending a fortune, I definitely recommend it. Great people, easy access, and an all-around great stay. I’d happily stay here again.

I literally couldn't have asked for a better place after such a horrible situation and I will openly admit that coming from being robbed, broken down and beaten these people showed no judgement on me. They are some of the kindest most understanding and helpful people I have ever met in my life.. Suzanne is so intelligent and her husband is also so empathetic. The horse farm is unlike any other place on earth. Heaven on Earth. From the pond with hammocks secluded to enjoy the sunrise or sets, to the conversations and convenience of amenities. Hot and cold water were able to be utilized for bucket baths in the woods which I loved. I couldn't wait to just shower and rest without worry. This place exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to come back and visit. I loved the horses and they truly are so incredibly majestic and beautiful. If you NEED a place and have a tent, GO. You will be welcomed with open arms. There's a fire pit, cold drinks for purchase for SINGLES & Suzanne was even kinda enough to help me haul my things. I was able to hold a lil chicken too. 100% would recommend to anyone. These are genuinely some of the kindest and most understanding people I've ever met. This place is a serene getaway. I can't believe I'm home in Chicago and can't wait to visit again soon. Until then, tell dink I love em. Lol he is still my lil fav. <3 thank you all again kindly.

Weekend Trip to Bear Bottom Ranch
We had a great time. It is very secluded. Despite multiple sites it feels very private. The tipi was great. Older reviews mention issues with it being sealed from the elements, but we had no issues. There was a little rain, and though there was some dripping from above, it was large enough that we could push the bed to the side and were able to remain dry overnight. The porta-potty is a bit of a hike from the site, but it is very clean and a great addition. If on the fence, this site is great!

The thoughtfulness and love Mary has put into making this camp magical is obvious from the moment you pull in. From fairy lights, to the pond, the well kept grounds, small orchard, adorable fire pit and wonderful host.
