We purchased 50 acres of GORGEOUS timbered property, with rolling forested hills, several creeks, trees towering over 100 feet tall, and abundant wildlife. It's absolutely perfect for Hipcamp!
Building a new farm (and Hipcamp program) from scratch takes time--years even, but we decided now is as a good a time as any to share our beautiful timber with Hipcampers looking for some peace and privacy. While the site itself will be groomed and set up as listed, the surrounding grass won't be perfectly green yet, there will still be a lot of dead-wood and natural debris around the sites, and trails are a bit rough and uneven. If you can overlook the "rustic" aspects though, and enjoy the beauty of the peace and quiet of just enjoying nature, as it has sat unmanaged for roughly 50 years around the sites, then you are likely to love every moment!

Just a short 5-10 minute drive down the road, Burden Falls awaits, offering a scenic natural wonder to explore. The Garden of the Gods, another iconic attraction, is a mere 15-20 minute drive away, inviting you to marvel at its breathtaking rock formations and panoramic vistas.
For added convenience and indulgence, homemade breakfast and lunch sandwiches are available upon request, allowing you to savor delicious meals without the hassle of preparation. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and indulge in the ultimate retreat experience at our unique property.
ATTENTION- I allow animals, but they are NOT ALLOWED ON THE FURNITURE! If you let your animals on the couch/bed I will charge an extra fee for professional cleaning. Bring a dog bed/ cat bed etc.

We live on 70 secluded acres adjoining the Shawnee National Forest area with some hiking opportunities, woods and water activities that we would love to share with you. Close to Garden of the Gods (10 min), Rimrock, Pounds Hollow, Belle Smith Springs, Lusk Creek and other trails. We are in the middle of the Shawnee surrounded by trees, our own lake, you can hike around and walk the land in solitude, yet we are only 25 minutes to Harrisburg. Tent and RV camping sites: Shade and sunny areas available. RV pads for self-contained campers. One Electric space available. Water available from spigot and hose. No sewer. Clean Porta-Potty on premises. No showers.
It is HIGHLY suggested that campers arrive at dusk or before sunset. The entrance to the area is not marked by lights, only a reflective triangle with the house number. The driveway is not lit, and the camp area also has no lights (better to see the stars). Contact us if arrival before nightfall is not possible and we can help guide you to the areas.
Pets and service dogs welcome with notice. All dogs and people Must be dog friendly (owner has 5 Irish Wolfhounds). Dogs must have proof of vaccinations.
Creeks, hills, hiking trails, and private pond full of bluegill and bass. Kayaks, paddleboards, canoe and boat for your use. NO lifeguard on duty. Life preservers/jackets must be worn when around the pond. There is a beach area for swimming.

It was a great experience the first time, so we came back. The hosts are warm and welcoming, and we love hiking through the fields with our dogs. It is a little off the beaten path but worth the drive. Quiet and private. If you are driving between the Southeast and the Midwest or the Northwest, this is a great place to stop.

The whole vibe of the place is excellent and it's obvious they care about the happiness of their guests. The hiking club I'm a member of stayed at the Grainzebo site and we couldn't be more happy!!! Jon and Carla are simply the best. They accommodated a large group, basically catered to our needs and offered tips and suggestions on what to do and see in the area. He set up our own compost ports-toilet, refilled water, and made sure us ladies were comfortable. The dogs appreciated the field area for play. The location was quiet and peaceful.

Jennifer & her husband were above and beyond accommodating! I booked last minute after the USFS campground I was trying to stay in was full, and so happy I stumbled upon Jennifer’s property instead. I was their first guest of the year, so I likely caught them off guard, but the property was absolutely perfect. I was looking for solitude, a bonfire, and clear view of the sky. This place was perfect; trees for hammocking, peaceful pond, perfect view of the sky (highly recommend for new moon or full moon!) And supplied firewood was an added bonus. When the weather shifted dramatically the day of my departure, Jennifer kindly offered an additional complimentary night if it meant safer travel for me the following day. I will absolutely stay here again!

My boyfriend and I travel a lot for both work and pleasure and this is definitely one of my favorite stays! This place was very peaceful. There is only dim lighting outdoors at night so the stars were amazing. Our host was very warm and welcoming as well.
The property is well kept but if you need to ask which port a potty to use, this may not be the right fit for you. You are more in nature than in the city.

I came in a warmer night in February so I had the place myself. Jon was a laid back and friendly host. His land is well maintained and the compost toilet is very clean and has a window for a view of the woods. I ordered a bottle of wine and Jon even brought me a wine glass and opener from the house to open it. I definitely would recommend and come back!

About
Giant City State Park is a wooded wonderland with towering sandstone formations deep in the Shawnee National Forest of southern Illinois. Hiking, fishing, rock climbing, and rappelling are big draws, and the park’s central campground puts you in the heart of the action. Highlights include the sandstone bluffs of Giant City Streets, the park’s fern- and trillium-lined trails, and the Devils Standtable climbing area. The sole Giant City Campground features a number of tent campsites, 14 walk-in campsites, and access to the 1930s Giant City Lodge. Horseback riders can enjoy an equestrian camp and 12 miles of equestrian trails too.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- Of the 85 Giant City campsites, 60 are reservable and 25 are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Reservations are seasonal and only available from April 1 to November 30. From December 1 to March 31, the campground remains open but all sites are first-come, first-served.
- Reservable sites can be booked 180 days in advance online or by calling (866) 716-6550.
- Get your reservations in order early for the peak season of Memorial Day to Labor Day.
When to go
Giant City State Park operates year-round, although the summer season is the most popular time for camping, with highs in the upper 80s and lows in the upper 60s. Spring visitors can enjoy an especially verdant forest with wildflowers, while autumn campers will be treated to a fall foliage transformation in the park’s oak and hickory trees. Winter visitors can expect nighttime temperatures at or below freezing from December to February, as well as some services to be shut off, including the campground showers.
Know before you go
- For services near the park, check out Carbondale, about a 15-minute drive north.
- If you’re not up for tent or RV camping, the Giant City Lodge offers cabin rentals. The lodge’s restaurant also has a famous fried chicken dinner.
- Giant City Stables operates within the park to offer guided trail rides and pony rides between March and November. They can be reached at (618)529-4110.
