We have a working farm with sweeping views of Lookout mountain and only 12 minutes from all the comforts of downtown Chattanooga. Our expansive 120-acre property provides campers with the freedom to choose their camping spots anywhere on the farm. Farm animals include horses, cattle, hogs, chickens, goats, bees, stocked ponds, gardens and much more. We have strategically placed signs throughout the property to help you identify potential neighbors. If you desire the company of ducks, consider setting up camp near our picturesque duck pond. For those who prefer the rustic crowing of roosters to a phone alarm, we have four chicken coops dispersed across the farm. Our horses freely roam the front pastures. The cows enjoy grazing on lush grass and taking refreshing dips in the ponds. They also relish watching the sunset from the hill's vantage point, as it offers the best view on the farm. We are a working farm with staff tending to various jobs throughout the day. We have a map to show where the camping site sits on the property. We intentionally leave some of our fields uncut. In some fields, the grass can come up above the knees. We leave that to the animals to take care of. All of our staff are super friendly and happy to help guide you to the best camping spot and answer any questions. In searching for your campsite please note that there may be livestock in and around certain areas as we rotate pastures. Potable well water can be located from the blue spigot outside of the staff housing area, in between the orange and green tiny home, and outside the outdoor shower. Embracing farm life is not just an adventure but also a valuable learning opportunity, whether you're a family or an individual seeking a taste of the countryside lifestyle. We hope to see you soon on the farm!

The bathhouse offers hot showers, a flush toilet, and sink. (shower not available in winter months) The open pole barn has a deluxe camping kitchen set up with pots and pans, a propane stove, a coffee maker, and a dishwashing sink. There is also a dining table and chairs. While the property is close and convenient to Chattanooga, once you are enjoying the serene woods, shady trees, starry nights, and quality time with family and friends you will forget all about the city! While there are no full-time residents on the property, there is a small functioning horse farm about 100 yards from the camping area. On most days the owner will stop by to care for the horses, and teach riding lessons.

Maclellan Island- An Urban Oasis

YOU MUST PROVIDE WATERCRAFT OF SOME KIND TO GET TO MACLELLAN ISLAND! Maclellan Island is a unique 24-acre wildlife sanctuary situated in the middle of the Tennessee River, in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. It is accessible by water only. The island is home to a great diversity of plants, animals, and birds. Campers can enjoy easy wildlife viewing in a true urban wilderness setting. Muskrats, geese, and kingfishers can be seen feeding at the water’s edge, while the forest is home to songbirds, turkeys, raccoons, owls, possums, foxes, and woodpeckers. It's a great place to quietly watch nesting osprey and great-blue heron as well as an important feeding area for migrating warblers. IMPORTANT: Maclellan Island is accessible by boat ONLY. You will need to provide your own transportation to and from the island, either using your own boat or by renting a kayak/SUP from a local outfitter. We recommend renting kayaks from L2 Outdoors who launches from Coolidge Park. Maclellan Island’s earliest inhabitants were Indigenous People whose island community was likely an extension or suburb of Citico, a nearby village. Farmed in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, the island was plowed for many years and largely free of the trees which shade it today. Floods have covered the island from time to time and drove away numerous early settlers including one early farmer, Abel Kesterson, who survived rising waters in 1867 only by holding onto the horns of his cow as they swam to safety. The island eventually passed through the hands of several prominent companies as well as a number of more rambunctious inhabitants. Finally in 1954 Maclellan Island was donated to the Chattanooga Audubon Society by Robert J. Maclellan for preservation as a wildlife refuge. If you'll be arriving by a motorized boat, you will need to use a public boat ramp. The closest one is at the Tennessee River Park. Coolidge Park has a kayak/canoe/SUP launch and you can park cars in their parking lot overnight for a fee.

Spacious, private, AND still close to town and the interstate. 10 acres total creates a little paradise in the middle of town. Enjoy panoramic raised tree views with beautiful sunrises. While here, you can enjoy outdoor access to all ten acres including a nice scenic driveway and walk and a pasture down by the road. We are conveniently located close to East Ridge, Ringgold, and Fort Oglethorpe, with downtown Chattanooga only 25 minutes away. NOTE: Driveway access is paved and curving on an incline. It is a little steeper near the end as pictured. It’s 12 feet wide and a little wider around the curves for extra room. We have pulled trailers and a 20 foot uhaul up through there with no issue. 5th wheel campers may have difficulty not having enough width for turns. NOTE: Our two dogs are free range when they are let out of the main house. This is why we aren’t pet friendly for bookings. 22 acres of Private, Magickal forest spanning the bottom valley all the way to the top of Sand Mountain. The mountain has several natural terraces and flat areas suitable for campers to choose from including a nice spot overlooking a rock garden. As you ascend Sand Mountain, the vegetation thins revealing spectacular views of Lookout Mountain especially in the fall & winter months after the leaves have fallen. At the very top of the property are 30+ ft high cliffs with a cave. It has a colorful collection of lichen growing in it and we have named it our 'Mandala cave'. The cave is great for meditation. Rejuvenating guided hikes to the cliffs & caves are available upon request. This is raw land & raw forest. If you enjoy bush craft, there is plenty of material for you to build a lean-to, tipi, or structure of choice. Trees range from poplar to multiple species of oak. Natural wildlife include deer, wild turkeys, scorpions, and ticks. You're welcome to bring fluffy as we've never seen any predators, but there is a slight chance there could be some around. A lost animal on the mountain could be near impossible to find. We have 2 male cats. Unfortunately, the Earth does what she wants and weather forecasts can't be relied upon. We've had sunny days that have been forecasted to rain and un-predicted downpours. It can be raining at the top or the bottom of the mountain but not at the campsites in the middle.

Where to go

Northwest Georgia

At the western edge of Lookout Mountain, Cloudland Canyon State Park offers a landscape of canyons, cliffs, waterfalls, and woods, along with overnight options of cottages, yurts, tent and RV sites, walk-in sites, and backcountry sites. At the Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA), enjoy miles of trails, abundant wildlife and hunting, and designated camping areas. Explore Fort Mountain State Park, then overnight in the campground or cottages. Further east, Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest is a vast area of wilderness with plenty of options for dispersed camping as well as developed campgrounds.

Tennessee

Just over the border in Tennessee, enjoy outdoor adventures and historic sites at Chattanooga. Harrison Bay State Park in the Tennessee Valley offers lakes and woods, and both primitive and RV camping. White water enthusiasts can float, canoe, or raft two rivers at the Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park and stay in primitive riverside tent sites. Further north, chase waterfalls at Fall Creek Falls State Park and take your pick of several camping areas. Explore the Caney Fork Gorge, rivers and cascades at Rock Island State Park, and choose from tent sites, RV sites, and cabins.

Alabama

Head west and south to explore the mountains and Piedmont region of Alabama. Camp in the woods of DeSoto State Park, which offers a wide range of primitive and backpacking tent sites, rustic cabins, and glamping tents, along with wildflowers and waterfalls. Lake Guntersville State Park is home to Alabama’s largest lake, golf, miles of trails, and overnight options that include campsites, cabins, and chalets. Nearby Cathedral Caverns State Park offers massive caves, stalagmites, and both a developed campground and backcountry sites.

When to go

Summers are the busiest times at Lookout Mountain. Visit in the fall for smaller crowds, cooler temperatures, and colorful fall foliage. Spring is another good option, and also the best time for chasing waterfalls. Different flowers bloom year-round at Rock City Gardens. The caves at Cloudland Canyon are only open in April, June, July, September, and October. Visit in winter to see frozen cascades.

Know before you go

  • Lookout Mountain is free to visit, but the Rock City, Ruby Mountain, and Incline Railway attractions and Point Park charge entrance fees.
  • Some popular parks require advance reservations for entrance and camping and may limit capacity at peak times.
  • Fishing licenses are required in Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama. Georgia also requires a separate trout license to fish in designated trout waters.
  • Be bear aware—black bears can be found in the mountains and woods around Georgia.
  • Dispersed camping and recreation on Georgia Wildlife Managed Areas usually require a license, permit, or pass.
