Hippie Haux – A Quiet Forest Spot Near the Coast Hippie Haux sits on about five acres of mixed oak forest with a few soft, rolling clearings. It’s tucked right near town but feels quiet and tucked away, and you’re only about 45 minutes from the beach. The land has a relaxed, rustic feel—simple, natural, and easy to settle into. The camping area isn’t divided into marked sites. Instead, there’s an open clearing where you can choose your own spot. There’s room for roughly 6–8 setups, so it works well for tents, car camping, vans, hammocks, and pop-ups. I also have a small trailer available to rent if you’d like something more comfortable, and there’s a raised platform you can set up on as well. You’ll find the basic comforts here: a fire pit, picnic tables, drinking water, electricity, a compost toilet, and an outdoor shower. There’s a simple communal kitchen too, plus easy parking. Fires are allowed as long as someone stays with them. Pets and kids are welcome. The land gets regular visits from deer, owls, hawks, armadillos, squirrels, and the occasional curious bunny. At night, the sky opens up enough for great stargazing. There’s a small herbal garden on site, and a yoga deck tucked under the trees for morning stretches or a quiet sit in nature. It's a great little hang out area with bluetooth speaker setup. Outside you will find a firepit as well as a charcoal grill, a table for eating, a hammock, and a swing chair. The outside shower house is on the primitive side and made for the adventure type. It is equipped with a portable toilet and shower under the stars. It is hooked up with instant hot water. During the day, paddle your way to the beautiful Three Sisters Springs for a swim. You may see some manatee or dolphins on your way there. Hunter Springs is a great little park with a beach area for swimming and kayak rentals too. There are also several Diving with the Manatee tours available. One we suggest in town is Fun2Dive. Our recent stay was exceptional. The site is ideally located, offering beautiful views and a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. The host Laura and her husband were incredibly accommodating and have clearly invested a great deal of care into creating a thoughtfully designed, well-maintained space. It exceeded our expectations, and we look forward to returning.

We spent three peaceful nights at Lakeside RV and couldn’t have asked for a more relaxing getaway. The site was wonderfully private, making it easy to unwind and enjoy the quiet and lakeview. Our dog had an absolute blast—plenty of space to roam and nearby trails to explore. One of our favorite outings was to a nearby park with scenic walking paths and a beautiful boardwalk stretching over the lake—perfect for morning strolls and sunset views. Laura was fantastic to work with. She was incredibly responsive and accommodating, especially when we had to adjust our arrival due to unexpected weather. Her flexibility and clear communication made the whole experience smooth and stress-free. Highly recommend Lakeside RV for anyone looking for a tranquil escape.

This was hands down the BEST Hipcamp I have been to. The area for the camper was nice and flat and large enough to accommodate any sizes. The hookups were perfectly placed. But the winner… the view! Looking out on the lake sipping morning coffee was hands down the best moments. If you are thinking about this one, just go ahead and book it.

Where to go

Leesburg Area

Leesburg has docks, boat launches, and fishing access to both Lake Griffin and Lake Harris. Both Leesburg and nearby Tavares offer RV travelers a variety of RV parks and RV resorts with full hookups and wifi to choose from.

Lake Griffin State Park

Lake Griffin State Park is just 10 minutes north of downtown Leesburg. This tranquil park offers kayak and canoe rentals and boat tours on Lake Griffin. There’s a 2-mile sandhill and swamp trail here, plus a 400-year-old live oak tree that sits at the park entrance. Book a spot at the campground for an RV or a tent—both come with picnic tables, fire pits, and restrooms.

Lake Louisa State Park

For an even more immersive lake park, head 40 minutes south of Leesburg to Lake Louisa State Park. In addition to six lakes, this 4,500-acre park has seven miles of paved trails and 20 miles of multi-use trails through hilly terrain. The park has a developed campground for RV and tent campers, as well as primitive campsites for backpackers, and bike and kayak rentals.

Central Florida Springs

For incredible spring sites close to Leesburg, the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge and Rainbow Springs State Park are each an hour away.

Ocala National Forest

The massive Ocala National Forest can satisfy any nature lover’s craving for wilderness, wildlife, and outdoor adventure. Home to alligators, black bears, and over 100 bird species, this preserve has miles of hiking trails and multiple primitive camping options.

When to go

Each spring, Leesburg fills up for Bikefest, a 3-day music festival and motorcycle rally. Otherwise, the area is busiest in winter and on weekends. You can enjoy outdoor activities in Leesburg’s subtropical climate year-round, but summer tent camping can be a challenge due to high temperatures, humidity, and rainfall. Summer travelers may be happiest in lodging or RVs with climate control.
