There are easy trails on property along the lush stream (the original riverbed of the Middle Saint Vrain Stream), fishing or swimming in the pond (no lifeguard on duty), or challenging trails into Roosevelt National Forest from the property. (Ask Hiker Dot for guidance.) Several National Forest access points, where you can enjoy peaceful walks away from crowds, are a short drive.
Bliss Canyon is a spur off of breathtaking South Saint Vrain Canyon. Stroll on over to the South or Middle for renowned fly fishing. For climbers, there are over 50 climbs in South Saint Vrain Canyon!
Rocky Mountain National Park, one of the five Crown Jewels of the National Park Service, is nearby. The closest trailhead in RMNP is 10 miles, the next trailhead at Wild Basin entrance to the park
is 13 miles, and the Beaver Meadows entrance (main entrance) is 36 miles. Rocky Mountain National Park has breathtaking drives, easy strolls with interpretive signs, and 360 miles of trails. (Advance reservation required for entry 9:00 am to 3:00 pm for main park, or 5:00 am to 6:00 pm for Bear Lake corridor.)
Indian Peaks Wilderness also has several nearby access points and trailheads. Ask for details.

The ranch was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This totally off-grid ranch is surrounded on all sides by Pike National forest. Offering several glamping sites, as well as several sites for self-contained RV’s and tents, we are an ideal basecamp for the trail enthusiast. From the nearby Little Scraggy Trailhead, there is biking, hiking, or horseback riding on the extensive trails of the Buffalo Creek area SW of Denver, including segment #3 of the renown Colorado Trail. Our Camp rests at the base of its namesake, Little Scraggy Peak, with direct access to these trails via the 9.5-mile Little Scraggy Trail. The ranch itself has several miles of trails to explore within the ranch’s fence lines that are restricted to hiking or horseback riding. If fishing is your thing, there are the gold-medal waters of the South Platte River canyon below Cheesman Dam, the lake at Pine Valley Open Space Park or the waters of the North Fork of the S. Platte, (also good for kayaking). You might prefer rock climbing Little Scraggy Peak (sometimes referenced as “Skinner Mtn.” by climbers). The sides can be easily free climbed, or technical climb the face. There are additional climbing opportunities on nearby Chair Rocks and Cathedral Spires. Potable drinking water is available from an onsite 270-gallon water tank. Portable toilets are only a short walk away from sites.Dogs are welcome at camp, but to keep camp pleasant for all guests, please clean up after your dog. Friendly dogs are welcome to enjoy camp off leash. If your pet has aggressive tendencies, we ask that you keep it leashed. This is a working ranch where we raise and train horses and ponies. Our particular interest is in carriage driving, and we offer driving experiences upon request.There is a solar electric corral available ($10/day, three horse maximum), or if you prefer you can rent individual porta-panel corrals ($10/day/horse). Please provide your own water buckets and we ask that you clean up your horse’s manure and unused hay. Come experience the Old West as it was and still is as you meander along the road through working ranches that were homesteaded back in the early 1900’s...their weathered log cabins still standing and often still occupied...others are close enough for a great “back in time” photo opportunity. As Colorado's open range law permits ranchers to graze their cattle without borders, you will often find them on the roadways or you may even get caught up in a cattle drive as the ranchers move their cattle from one pasture or paddock to another. Springtime brings all the calves and branding time! Observing the rancher, his horse, and dog working together is a genuine treat. Look along the roadside for sage grouse, in the open fields for pronghorn, down in the willows and streams for the bull moose, in the trees for the mule deer, and on top of the ridge lines for the elk. There are also bald eagle and osprey nests, alpacas, horses, sheep, and goats. All this just on the ride into Williams Fork Lodging!
Our residence sits above this scenic panorama at the end of the road and adjacent to public lands tucked beneath Copper Peak on the Williams Fork Range. The elevation is roughly 8,500 feet and the 180 degree view is breathtaking...encompassing three mountain ranges, many peaks, pastures/meadows, forest, and ponds.
Soak in everything from the glorious sunrises to enchanting full moons to brilliant stars that truly seem closer than they are…the view of the Milky Way is unobstructed by light pollution for outstanding celestial shows…and meteor showers are spectacular from the hot tub!
We live on the same property as the Lodge and are quite self sustainable: hunting, fishing, gardening, gathering wild berries, and raising our own poultry meat.
The Lodge and cabin are constructed of concrete and rock as well as high efficiency windows and takes full advantage of passive solar heat; backup heat and the hot water are provided by wood via an outside boiler maintained by us. Upon check in, you are greeted with farm fresh eggs from our chickens. And if interested, Dale offers fresh baked caramel rolls and other enticing breads and/or meals.

After that, miners came through in the late 1800s and dug prospector pits looking for gold. Many of these pits and even some old tin cans from miner's camps are still visible on the property today. In 1931, the area was re-surveyed with more accuracy. In 1936, the President of the United States, FDR, granted a land patent (homestead) of 632 acres to a man named Willard H Banks. Part of this 632 acre homestead granted by the President was what is now 105 West Ranch.Fast forward nearly 100 years. My wife, Rachel, and I bought this property in 2019, fulfilling a life-long dream of owning our own land. Your campsite is located approximately 35 minutes from Colorado Springs, and 2 minutes off Highway 94. You do not need 4wd to get to our place.
This site has a picnic table for you to enjoy your meals outdoors. The views are stunning from this secluded spot, and there's a water spigot available nearby on the property.
Your campsite is located in the wild and rustic, sometimes windy, Southeastern Plains of Colorado, and may not be for everyone. We can experience extreme weather in all seasons.
If you're into photography, our thunder and hailstorms occur during Springtime, and you might experience some amazing and intense light & sound shows!
When you stay with us, you will get the experience of camping on the Plains of Colorado - wild, raw, sometimes windy and rugged. It's an amazing experience to be had - with stunning views and a feeling of freedom that's hard to find in more civilized and populated locations.
You may see or hear coyotes, falcons, pronghorn, bull snakes and rattlers, owls, creepy-crawlers and experience annoying mosquitos and flies during the hotter summer season.
Our guests have mentioned they feel like they're on another planet when they're here... of course! We're traveling on the Fifth Dimension out here, so don't be surprised if you hear from the other side.
We believe that stewardship of the land is everyone's responsibility, and we're excited to share it with you to enjoy! Stargazing on the site can't be beat, and you may even catch a UFO or alien... if you're aligned!
This is NOT a party site. It's a quiet, secluded area where we can connect with nature and take a much needed break. We ask that you not remove anything from the property without chatting about it with us first.
Please bring your own blankets and sleeping bags. It can get down to freezing at night, so be prepared for travel and camping in sometimes extreme winter cold. Please check out the local forecast before traveling. We will be happy to refund any weather-related cancellations.
If you would like a complimentary cup of instant coffee or herbal tea brought to your site between 6-8 am, let us know what you'd like the night before and we'll send one over!
We offer a cold brown-bag style breakfast/snack for $5, as well. Your choice of a couple fresh hard-boiled eggs with trail mix or homemade sourdough bread/butter.
ABOUT THE AREA
There are a couple small local mini grocery stores and a gas station about 20 minutes west, on Highway 94. There are also a handful of small country cafes in the area, as well as the city restaurants in the Springs.
Enjoy nearby hiking trails in the area, as well as bicycling, motorcycle and 4-wheel drive trails.
The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is located about 20 minutes away.

Tucked in between Denver and the Front Range, Golden is a base camp for adventures both in the city and the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Once a hub for gold mining, hence the name, Golden now is a hub for local brew pubs and restaurants, offering a place to relax after enjoying the bounty of recreational opportunities. Clear Creek takes a wild tumble from the mountains before becoming a focal point for the town of Golden, which offers trails and parks along the rippling waterway. Public camping options in Golden include the city-run Clear Creek RV Park and Chief Hosa Campground. Just outside of town, Golden Gate Canyon State Park is nestled in the Front Range, offering 97 campsites, including RV and tent camping.
Where to Go
Rocky Mountain National Park
Dreaming of a camping trip in the Rockies? Golden is just over one hour from Estes Park, a popular eastern entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, and approximately two hours from Grand Lake, the primary western entrance. Inside the park, several campgrounds offer sublime views and access to adventures. While full hookup RV parks are not found directly in the national park, the gateway cities are home to private and public campgrounds offering a range of amenities.
Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests
Your best bet for finding free camping is to look for dispersed camping areas in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, which offers 1.5 million acres of open space in the Rocky Mountain wilderness, stretching north and south of I-70. Over 50 public campgrounds are available, with tent camping being more common than RV camping. Amenities like picnic tables, dump stations, and potable water are sometimes found.
Denver
Though Denver is a city, a surprising number of state park campgrounds and RV parks can be found, offering easy access to the vibrant downtown, museums, and shopping in the Mile High City. Chatfield State Park and Cherry Creek State Park are two year-round public camping options, offering a mix of full hookup, electric, and basic sites. Amenities include hiking trails, laundry facilities, and free wifi at the visitor centers.
When to Go
Summer is primetime for camping, as evening temperatures stay comfortable for tent camping and daytime temperatures are perfect for outdoor adventures. Spring is cooler, with variable weather. Fall brings the changing of the aspen trees, an annual celebration in the Colorado Rockies. Winter weather is always a possibility in both fall and spring, however. Winter brings unique recreational opportunities, but freezing temperatures and heavy snows are regular occurrences campers need to be prepared to handle.
