We are the largest Arabian horse rescue in the United States. We are on 100 acres, but are currently using only 10 fenced acres for our horses. We have an average of 75 horses on our property. Most live in larger areas or paddocks in group "herds".
We focus on rehabilitation and training with the goal of finding permanent homes for our horses. However, we have about 30+ horses who are "sanctuary horses", either because they are older, or were traumatized, or have health issues, thus will not be rideable. I have 21 acres of raw land, plus another 2.5 acres further north. I have personally camped on it a couple of times. The majority of the land is flat with sagebrush and rises about 15 feet at one end. It is a pie-shaped piece of property; the point area is the highest part and offers great views from the top. All of the land is extremely quiet.
There are hard-packed DG roads leading all the way to the property (see maps). The property sits approximately 1/4 mile from Point “B” on the California City Off-Road Vehicle Trails—straight down Temple Road from the property to Point B. California City does require permits for off-road riding. If you choose not to ride, the property is very quiet and makes for a great getaway.
I use Cricket for cell service and get five bars out there. The property is also approximately 2.5 miles from Highway 395, yet I don’t see or hear anything from the highway.
There are no facilities on the property. Showers and dumping stations are located further down Twenty Mule Team Road, approximately 10–15 miles away (not exactly sure). There is a small store there as well. From the property to the center of California City is approximately 17 miles.
The ground is mostly decomposed granite with some small boulders and lots of sagebrush, usually spaced about 12 feet apart. Roads and trails run along all three sides of the property. At night, you can see practically every star in the sky—there’s no light pollution. When I was there, it was so quiet I had to turn on music at a low volume because otherwise it felt too quiet.

I have 21 acres of raw land, plus another 2.5 acres further north. I have personally camped on it a couple of times. The majority of the land is flat with sagebrush and rises about 15 feet at one end. It is a pie-shaped piece of property; the point area is the highest part and offers great views from the top. All of the land is extremely quiet.
There are hard-packed DG roads leading all the way to the property (see maps). The property sits approximately 1/4 mile from Point “B” on the California City Off-Road Vehicle Trails—straight down Temple Road from the property to Point B. California City does require permits for off-road riding. If you choose not to ride, the property is very quiet and makes for a great getaway.
I use Cricket for cell service and get five bars out there. The property is also approximately 2.5 miles from Highway 395, yet I don’t see or hear anything from the highway.
There are no facilities on the property. Showers and dumping stations are located further down Twenty Mule Team Road, approximately 10–15 miles away (not exactly sure). There is a small store there as well. From the property to the center of California City is approximately 17 miles.
The ground is mostly decomposed granite with some small boulders and lots of sagebrush, usually spaced about 12 feet apart. Roads and trails run along all three sides of the property. At night, you can see practically every star in the sky—there’s no light pollution. When I was there, it was so quiet I had to turn on music at a low volume because otherwise it felt too quiet.

1 night at A Unique Mountain Retreat
Our stay at this cabin was truly a great experience from start to finish. John was very attentive and made the entire stay smooth and enjoyable.
The cabin itself was incredibly cozy and warm, with a unique charm that made it feel special. The views were absolutely amazing and added so much to the overall atmosphere despite the weather we had. We did experience some strong winds during our visit, but even with that, we still fully enjoyed our time there. It didn’t take away from the experience at all.
Overall, it’s the perfect spot to get away from the city while still being close enough to grab anything you might need. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful and memorable stay.

What a fantastic site! John has created a beautiful space and his hospitality was exceptional. We watched sunrise from the patio, and at dusk, we walked around the trail he created. Beautiful land! There’s a nice trail (~30 minute walk) around the property with views in all directions. Our dog especially enjoyed the walk. The grounds, common spaces and toilets were very clean. I appreciated that the sink had running water (hot and cold). The stars were beautiful at night as there’s no light pollution around. What a comfortable stop on our long long roadtrip.

The hosts are the most helpful people ever! My wife, our pup, and I got caught in a really bad ditch only 500 feet away from the campsite and the car wasn’t able to get out.
Long story short they immediately contacted their neighbor to help pull us out and helped keep up spirits up! It’s all part of the adventure!
It’s a very serene area, great spots to walk, sketch, and just disconnect from everything for a bit. We absolutely recommend them!

John was quick to respond to questions about the fire ban and using firepits prior to the booking. He was very helpful with suggestions and providing driving instructions. When I got to the campsite, John was generous with his time explaining the unique property and kind enough to offer a different site if the one I booked was not to my liking (Campsite #1 was perfect with lots of space, shade and close to restrooms/showers!). It was so thoughtful of him to check in on me in the evening and offer a discount on the firepit (as it was getting chilly) :) All facilities were clean, well built and maintained. Well maintained hiking trail around the property, great way to take in the views!
Friendly neighbors, good coffee and dining spots around town, museums and wineries - all within a short driving distance (~20 mins) of the property. Highly recommend!!

He took the time to show us around when we arrived which made us feel very welcome. The campsite was pristine, the bathroom was very clean, and the walking trail around the property was fantastic.
