Located in the Sierra Nevada Foothills in Gold Country~ 15 min from Grass Valley, Nevada City or Colfax. There is the 'MUST SEE' yuba river nearby neavada city and grass valley, Greenhorn creek that runs into Rollins Lake very close to the property. Also the American River is another nearby beauty worth exploring. There is so much nature and beauty around our area. Frolic (property name) is a wild place with nature running the show. It is quiet and beautiful. Usually cooler because it is right on the water. The dock goes out to the 5 acre pound which is stocked with Bass. You will need to keep food inside of the Cabin/Sauna because we share the space with the animals that live here. The pond is shared with one other neighbor, so you may see other people playing on the pond or hear nearby activity through the trees. It's a great place to hang your hammock and bring a good book or birdwatch. This has been an adventure for me in Saying Yes to life and the rewarding challenges it brings. I fell in love with the huge grama oaks, the pristine pond and the feral overgrown everything. It has been a workin' progress and lots of time to pause and listen. The property is shaped like a pint glass running north to south, with a lovely bowl the pond sits in and an ancient meadow up behind the cabin. Up the hill, a hotter zone, more exposed with it's own beauty, where we live. On the occasion, one of us may come down to the pond for a swim, especially when it's too hot up top. Frolic has been a great teacher in reminding me to PLAY, relax and go with the flow. I hope you can find the same joy and rejuvenation here.

On offer is a sanctuary nestled in a very secluded expanse of land that stretches from ridgetop to river—a private wilderness just 3 miles from strange and wonderful Nevada City, an hour from Tahoe, 1.5 hours from Sacramento and 2.5 hours from the Bay Area. Here you will find. - miles of hiking and mountain biking trails on the land - 360 degree views of the Yuba watershed with epic sunsets - a year-round creek you can walk to Surrounded by oak, madrone, pine, fir and cedar forest, we are land tenders and village builders, nestled in several hundred acres of remote public and private wilds. We are in the midst of building an intentional neighborhood, so you might come upon some of our landmates as you walk around the land. Come visit us and enjoy a truly magical getaway. As you've likely heard, California has been home to many wildfires lately. It can sometimes be smokey here during fire season. We do not offer refunds for cancellations (apart from our normal cancellation policy) due to smoke or nearby fires unless there is an evacuation order. You can check the local air quality by going to airnow dot gov and entering 95959 as the zip code. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Beneath our lovely local towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City lay a nearly forgotten history and a nearly forgotten people, the Nisenan Indians. The Nisenan (pronounced nee-see-nan or nee-she-nan) are the original people of this place and their story and history is ripe for the telling. Because the gold rush seems to be the “beginning” of all current history books, we find it a perfect intersectional moment to tell the story of the people and culture who were here thousands of years before they met the gold rush head on. This is a brief introductory story of the Nisenan people. At a time when the local landscape was rich with Nisenan place names; at a time when the Nisenan people themselves were thriving and plentiful upon the land; before the coming of the California gold rush, before California even became a state, the Nisenan people had lived lives that were full of unique, cultural richness and great wealth here in their ancient homelands. They lived in ancient towns named Ostomah’, Woloyu, Wakadok, Panpakan and hundreds more. This landscape was laden with clean water, delicious food, strong medicine, pure spirit, ancient burial grounds, numerous animal species that are now gone, and was abundant with Nisenan families. Today, these ancient Nisenan towns lay beneath our modern towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley. It was unfortunate for the Nisenan that their territory would become ground zero for human greed and catastrophic changes that would soon befall them at the hands of the California gold rush. Tens of thousands of immigrants from every corner of the planet descended upon Nisenan lands to make their fortunes in the gold fields. Every tree was cut down to build the new towns and hundreds of miles of flumes, the large game herds were hunted to extinction, the natural food sources were destroyed by over population and later by cattle, and the salmon and the great rivers themselves were destroyed by hydraulic mining. Everything that the Nisenan relied on for survival was gone within the first two years of the gold rush. In addition to the environmental destruction of the land, the newly formed state of California’s own governor called for the extermination of the red race. Bounties were placed on American Indian heads. Indians were violently removed from their homes and died from murder, disease and starvation. Pockets of people survived here and there, sometimes because they had found a non-native citizen to be their champion; a champion who would be their voice and help navigate the new world for them. In the case of the Nisenan who lived within the Yuba and Bear River Watersheds, Belle Douglas was one such champion. Belle Douglas was a founding member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West (NDGW). Belle saw the abuses that were put upon the Indians and stood up to be their voice. The Nisenan could not read or write. Documents penned by Belle’s caring hand are contained within the local Nevada County Historical Society that show decades of activism on her part. It was directly because of Belle’s tenacity with the Bureau of Indian Affairs that the Nevada City Rancheria became a federally recognized reservation in 1913 via an executive order from then President Woodrow Wilson. The Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe held itself as a domestic foreign nation up until it was illegally terminated in 1964 and its reservation lands were sold at auction. Today, the surviving Nisenan families are ghosts in their own homelands. Being landless is extremely detrimental for the Tribal membership and the continuance of their culture. The Nisenan are trying very hard to raise their visibility with the non-native local community. To tell the story of this place prior to the gold rush is to give the Nisenan a spotlight on their past and a new focus on their future. Not only do the Nisenan survive today, but through all the devastation of the past, many of their old landmarks remain intact. Many of their sacred sites were destroyed during the mining devastation of the gold rush. Most of their sacred burial grounds are held by private property owners. But, a few are accessible within the parameters of both cultural districts of Nevada City and Grass Valley. *Nisenan medicine rock – Broad Street, Nevada City *Old reservation land of the Nevada City Rancheria – Cement Hill, Nevada City *Nisenan Burial Grounds – Cement Hill, Nevada City *Firehouse No.1 Museum that holds Nisenan photos, baskets and regalia – 214 Main Street, Nevada City *Nisenan Tribute Site on the Deer Creek Tribute Trail that includes interpretive signage, petroglyph art and Angkula Seo suspension bridge – Champion Mine Road, Nevada City *Numerous springs that were central to Nisenan culture – located in many places (Cement Hill, Under Sierra Nevada Hospital, etc.) *Nevada County FairGrounds is an ancient trade place for the Nisenan and place for 7-year trade events – McCourtney Road, Grass Valley *Northstar House is the site of the old Chief Weimar’s main town site – Old Auburn Hwy, Grass Valley *Loma Rica was the site of an old burial ground and Nisenan town site – Brunswick Road, Grass Valley *Empire Mine State Historic Park was the site of another Nisenan town – Empire Road, Grass Valley *Sierra College Nevada County Campus sits on another Nisenan town site – Sierra College Road, Grass Valley *Site of the Holt Brother’s Saw Mill where a war happened with the Nisenan – Old Hwy 20, Grass Valley *Oustomah was placed in the sidewalk in bronze letters to solidify the name of the Indian town that Nevada City is now on top of – Broad Street, Nevada City *The old Nevada City dump site where Chief Kelly lived is now a co-housing complex – Broad Street, Nevada City Today, in 2022, the descendants of these Nisenan people continue to fight for justice, inclusion and visibility and equally important, for the justice and rights for this land. The best vacation rental in Nevada City! Creekfront designer cabin on 8 acres with hot tub. The private creek is year-round and perfect for dipping on a hot day. There is a large fire pit, horseshoes, and a hammock by the creek. Seclusion and quietude in nature yet 4 minutes to downtown Nevada City, 15 min to rivers & lakes, and 45 min to ski resorts. This is the place for people who are tired of rentals that lack amenities or aesthetic quality. This is also a non-toxic, eco-friendly sanctuary. There are four bedrooms in the main house and an optional separate studio to rent. The main house has two bedrooms with king beds, one bedroom with a twin bed and a twin air mattress (if needed), and an enclosed den with a queen murphy bed. This allows 8 people to sleep comfortably. There are 3 bathrooms, one with a lux freestanding soaking tub with forest views. For 9-11 guests, or if you just want extra space for a smaller party, you can rent the separate studio for $125/night plus $99 cleaning fee. This is discounted from our regular rates of $210 for 3 people and $188 for 2 people, and our regular cleaning rate of $140. The studio is beautifully renovated with a queen bed, full kitchen, bathroom, and living area with sofa for a child or young adult to sleep on. The main house kitchen is fully equipped-- this is not like other rentals that lack wine glasses or cooking pans! We have a Ninja blender, instant pot/slow cooker, toaster, French press coffee maker, coffee grinder, lots of dishes and utensils, state of the art drinking water filtration system, gas oven and stove, baking dishes and pans, and more. You'll also be provided with organic cooking oil and organic spices. The owner specializes in non-toxic home design so everything from the mattresses and bedding to the soap & shampoo are non-toxic, eco-friendly, and/or organic. You have complete reign of the 8 acre property, including the hot tub, and private creekfront park with gazebo, fire pit, and horseshoe pit. Sometimes we rent out a studio on the property (or you can rent it-- see details above), but studio guests do not have access to acres of the property that are just for you, so the hot tub, fire pit, gazebo, horse shoe pit, and more is yours. If you want total privacy, we can block out the studio from being rented for an additional $75/night, or you can rent it for $125/night plus $99 cleaning fee (see details above). Pack and play, twin air bed, and dining table booster seat with tray are available! Please just request them before you arrive, and bring your own sheet for the pack and play. Air bed is usually needed if 8 guests are staying in the main home (if studio is not rented). It can snow in Nevada City in the winter (beginning in December or January and through March). If staying here when it snows, you will need snow chains and/or a 4WD vehicle to access the home. No parties or events, and please ask if you want to invite anyone to the home who is not in the guest count at booking. We love dogs and do not discriminate against breeds! Please just confirm at time of booking that your pup will not go to the bathroom in the house or chew any items in the house.

We enjoyed the peace and quiet here. The cabin was perfectly cozy and provided all the necessities for glamping. We also really liked the host’s recommendations in town - we tried Java John’s for coffee and Lola’s for a nicer dinner our last night. Russ and Kim both greeted us when we arrived and made sure we had everything we needed. The property was very easy to find.

Nice and relaxing spot for a few days of quiet time. Outdoor shower was a bit wonky (large bag with a hose) and cumbersome but nothing too tough! The door looked like maybe a bear had tried to get in recently (which I actually think is cool, haha) and the fire pit was a nice place to relax in the cool evenings! Overall, rad spot!

Stayed in the Serentity cabin and it was so nice. It was quiet and comfy with pretty much everything you would need is provided. Comfy beds, kitchen stuff and a wood stove for keeping warm. The shower and bathroom at the main house were definitely a huge plus after a dusty summer hike. I would stay here again for sure!

I camped here with my dad and the setting was beautiful and peaceful. Fishing was fun (but mostly small fish), and the host was incredibly kind—he even gave us a ride back up the hill in his truck after a tough hike in. Important heads-up: You really need a 4WD to reach the campsite. We didn’t have one and had to haul our gear half a mile down a steep, rocky path. It was rough, especially for my dad in his late 70s. If you like hiking in, just be sure to pack light! The cabins are very basic (comfy beds, a few hooks, not much space), and we had ant issues even with food stored carefully. Heads up, the portapotty hadn't been cleaned in a while and smelled pretty bad when we got there. If you’re prepared and ideally have the place mostly to yourself, it’s a lovely river escape. The host alone makes it worth the visit.

We had a wonderful stay at Jeff's cabin. Jeff was communicative and helpful. The cabin had all the basic necessities and worked well for my teenage daughter and myself. There was plenty of space to explore on the property, and the forest and creek areas were beautiful. If you travel during the summer months, be prepared for lots of mosquitoes. If you visit on a permissible burn day, I highly recommend using the fire pit for a campfire. It was a great way to end our trip. I suggest you bring your own extra toilet paper, towels, dish soap, and hand soap. Some of these items were provided, but it was nice to have extra since there are not any stores nearby. We look forward to visiting in the future.

It's a truly special place ! We usually do a full takeover of the 4 historical cabins (Serenity, Shambala, Trinity and Geronimo) with ~ 20 friends / family. Serenity is across the pond from the 3 others - a bit more secluded. It feels that we own the forest - no neighbors besides Adam the owner - and liberty for kids to roam around and adult to relax. The main fire-pit is the hanging place, with 2 huge tables to share grilled food. And old gas grill and a smoker complete the set-up. Each room has a basic kitchen well stocked with stove + cooking and serving basics+. There's running cold water and electricity, but drink only the spring water (provided and refillable at the spring). Rooms are basic and comfortable (no curtains, brings eye masks) but they are "forest clean". There's a shower and flush toilet in the owner's house (3 min walk). It's remote, secluded and we love it for that. No cell coverage, but slow wifi by the owner's house for emergency. We like exploring the area - malakoff park, yuba river and many swim holes. I've come every year since 2020 and love it.

If you like a long walk it is 2.5 miles down the dirt road to Oregon Creek and the middle fork of the Yuba. Driving takes 5 to 10 mins. The other direction is the largest lake in our county Bullards Bar Reservoir and Emerald Cove Marina. We are 1 mile down Marysville Rd. from a launch called dark day. There is a trailhead at the top of overflow boat parking for a public swimming hole on the lake. On our property, we have a main house with its own private facilities such as a kitchen, shower, and bath. On the land, we have 9 total unique cabin and canvas tent structures converted into boutique-like campsites. We have an epic outdoor entertaining kitchen and patio with an outdoor pizza oven and a little dog rinse behind the outdoor shower. The bathhouse is right across the way and provides a private but shared guest shower house, tub and sink. The sauna and fenced-in dog area are near the shipping container site. The sauna has just been remodelled with a shower and bathtub right outside the sauna house. Like anywhere in the woods there is an hour at sunset when you may have mosquitoes down near the sites in the spring and some of the summers depending on the year. We have a natural spray for that or fans in the kitchen. Off the path, you may find poison oak in the thick of the woods. So please stay on the marked trails.

Book your stay today and start planning your dream vacation! The Space: A 13 ft Bell tent is setup for you with one queen bed and one single bed inside (beds are made with sheets and comforters). The tent sits approximately 75 ft above the river with breathtaking views of the river and canyon. If you are coming with a group, there is over an acre of flat land which is perfect for any type of tent setup. At the tent site you’ll have access to a table and chairs, lounge chairs, picnic table, gas BBQ, basketball hoop and balls, rock campfire, kayaks, and a porta potty. A short 3-minute walk away from the tent you’ll find the shore of the Bear River. Guest access: The tent site is only accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicles. If you do not have a 4-wheel drive vehicle there is parking for up to four vehicles at the house. The tent site is less than a quarter mile walk downhill from the house. River access: If you’d like to visit the river to hang out, swim, or fish you can follow the dirt road next to the tent down to the river (3-minute walk). The riverfront has lounge chairs, a picnic table, and kayak's. The riverbank has small pebbles and rocks so water shoes are highly suggested for comfort when going into the water (recommended but not needed). Come and enjoy the views of the river, forest, and wildlife! This is a private tent site with one other listing on the property which is located at the house. You may rarely see other guests during your stay. Check out is at 12pm. If you or anyone in your party stays past 12:30pm you will be charged for an extra night for your full party. For guests that come for the day but do not stay the night there is a $25 fee per guest(s). If your vehicle gets stuck on the property and you need a tow we may be able to accommodate for a $350 tow fee per vehicle.

Skyline is a beautiful rural retreat center currently offering our Hermitage to writers, meditators and nature lovers who want a peaceful, comfortable environment to do creative work or take a spiritual retreat. The Yuba River, the Tahoe National Forest and South Yuba River State Park are all nearby. We have views that overlook the blue water of Bullards Bar reservoir, surrounded by mountains and trees. The quiet is enriched by sounds of birds, creek and wind. There are many walking trails throughout our private 200 acres. The Hermitage is a beautiful, light-filled studio, with high ceilings and many windows. Hand-built from wood milled on site, it is a serene space for a writing retreat. The Hermitage is located in its own small canyon where you are likely to hear and see only the wind in the trees, birds and frogs, and the occasional deer. The 300-square foot cabin includes a twin bed, propane stove and oven, small refrigerator, dining table and chairs, bathroom with shower, and is heated by a wood stove or electric heater. It is available by reservation from April 20 to November 20, and is recommended for one person. We are located in Camptonville, California, 30 miles north of Nevada City/Grass Valley off Highway 49. The Sacramento airport is a two hour drive from us; the Reno Airport is 2.5 hours away. All-wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. We are seven miles off the highway on a paved road. The last mile is gravel. Your destination opens up to a panoramic view to the southwest, overlooking Bullards Bar Reservoir. You will find your journey well worth it!

Come relax in your own private off grid cabin with a cozy loft and a view of Tahoe National Forest. At just over 5,000 feet in elevation and a dirt road drive Muir's Muse is the perfect place to disconnect. A three minute walk will get you to the Pioneer Trail which is a 25 mile non-motorized trail meandering through Tahoe National Forest, Bear Valley, and mountain lakes at its terminus. Open to hikers, bicyclists, equestrians and all lovers of the outdoors, the adventures are endless! Although there is cell service, there is no electricity or running water. There is an outdoor fire ring, a pit toilet on site and a portable heater and small camp stove for you to use... Just bring your own small propane canisters.
