Underworld Farms is a small goat ranch in the Kern River Valley. Surrounded by forestry land, on the Kern River, and on top of what used to be the old town of Whiskey Flat (Later re-named Kernville). There is no end to the beauty, history and adventure all around the property. Life took us to the Kern River Valley after moving out of Los Angeles. We enjoy living in the Southern Sierras immersed in all its natural beauty. The small but magnificent town of Kernville is approximately two and a half miles north of us.
Our livestock includes horses, dairy goats, sheep, and rabbits: Most of which are raised and bred as our son's 4H or FFA projects. You may be wondering why our farm is called "Underworld Farms". In a nutshell, since our ranch is on the footprint of the historic town of Whiskey Flat, we just happen to be south of the old Whiskey Flat "Boot Hill" Cemetery. Our "driveway" is the road that led from the old town of Kernville to the cemetery.
We hope that you consider parking your RV, van conversion, or trailer on one of our customized spots on the property. Or drive your vehicle and pitch a tent on one of our tent friendly sports. Or enjoy a stay in one of our small cabins. Regardless of what you stay in, you will definitely have a memorable time.
The campground is VERY barebones and rural. Critters, bugs, and sometimes fellow Hipcampers can be sparce or prevalent pretty randomly. Because Underworld Farms is a working ranch, you will probably hear livestock noises like horses neighing, sheep and goats calling, and our protector dogs barking from time to time. We encourage you to walk over to the horses and goats and meet them. They especially like when you bring them carrots or apple pieces.
The ranch has a double outhouse with a hand washing station sandwiched in between, it is rustic and bare bones. We check it to see if it has paper products, soap, water, and plenty of room in the trash bins. During the hotter months, the "daddy longleg" spiders enjoy infiltrating the outhouses and seem to spin new webs overnight. But they and their webs are harmless and easy to brush off. We ask for your assistance if there is something missing, or the trash needs taking out, or if the spiders have taken over again by getting ahold of us through the Hipcamp App and letting us know.
With all that being said, there is an ambient beauty here that is unbelievable and memorable. This beauty and draw is so powerful that it causes the many people who come visit to make arrangements to live in our little valley. There is much to do in and around our valley that you couldn't do it all in a lifetime. We hope that you come and stay at the ranch while enjoying our valley. May you have a great time.

This place is a hidden gem, I almost want to keep it a secret, it's that good! But Ryan deserves a great review and anyone considering coming here needs to know about some very important specifics as well. This was our second time staying at the pond and we came prepared. First, and most importantly, you will need 120ft of extension cords if you want to hook up power to your trailer/RV, van, etc. The location of the outlets are over 100ft away from the optimal spot to camp, and I don't recommend using a generator, it's way too peaceful and quiet for that kind of noise. Luckily if you have the cords, there is a 50A, 30A and 20A outlet on the power pole, plenty of power to run your A/C. There is good shade provided by one of the trees, and the pond is big enough to swim and fish in. The cool water really helps in the hot summer sun. There's lots of wildlife around, cows, rabbits, bullfrogs, birds, the occasional snake, etc. And although it's on the edge of a working citrus orchard, you have plenty of privacy, albeit the occasional 4x4 and workers passing by once or twice a day. Ryan's a great host, very accommodating and quick to respond and communicate. He even let us use the WiFi from the nearby home, which you'll need, because there is zero cell phone service anywhere in the area, it's about a 20min drive to get service. Overall it's a perfect place to relax and get away, but close enough to the Sequoias it make a great base camp to explore from. Five stars all around!!

Was a bit worried about the toilet situation from other reviews but there were two toilets and not many people there. Didn’t meet Nacho but he was very responsive via message. This site was amazing. The view from the hilltop was breathtaking. I couldn't believe where I was after waking up each morning. We have 2 young boys and they had a blast looking for snakes and lizard every day. The lake is 5 minutes away and the river is 10 minutes away. This is the perfect place to get away and be near all the festivities but also have privacy and some peace and quiet. The owner was incredible nice and hospitable. We will be returning on our next trip to Kern.

We had a wonderful stay at this RV park on Lake Olancha. What really stood out was how peaceful and secluded it felt—it never got too busy, which made it easy to truly relax and enjoy the surroundings.
One of our favorite perks was the easy, no-hassle access to boats and paddleboards. Being able to grab them anytime without needing to sign up or check in made the experience feel effortless and fun. Our twin 7-year-old boys especially loved exploring the area, and spotting frogs at night quickly became a highlight of the trip.
The location is also a big plus. It’s just a short drive to Lone Pine, with great access to hiking and the Alabama Foothills, making it a perfect base for outdoor adventures.
The office staff and host were warm, friendly, and genuinely helpful throughout our stay, which added to the welcoming atmosphere. And a small but important detail—the WiFi actually worked well, which is always appreciated when you’re on the road.
A couple of areas could use some improvement: the dock areas feel a bit outdated, and the zip line was unfortunately out of service during our visit. That said, these didn’t take away too much from an otherwise serene and enjoyable experience.
Overall, a peaceful, family-friendly spot that we’d happily return to.

Olancha Campground was easy to find and pull into our spot. After long days visiting Death Valley it was great to get back to the campground and play in the lake and walk around its perimeter. We saw lots of birds visiting the oasis including yellow headed black birds, road runners, and lots and lots of coots!

This is a nice little RV area. Be forewarned there is NOTHING nearby with less than a 30 minute drive and the RV sites are close together. However, it is a good place for an easy stop. I had a problem with my camper door, so I was only able to stay one of my three nights.

Stayed here with my small trailer and it was a great experience. Staff were super friendly and the views were great. Water and power easily accessible at the site and the grounds were well maintained and clean. Alabama hills isn’t too far of a drive if you want to get some hiking in and if you want to get to Death Valley it’s about an hour to an hour and a half. Took me 2ish hours to reach bad water basin which is deep in the park but there are closer attractions within the park. Over great experience even if you just want a place to rest and relax.

Such a great place to visit. I went in a camper and stayed in site #10. The site was clean and super quiet and peaceful. We used the paddle boards to go in the lake. My dogs enjoyed the lake as well. No one bothers you. You have an amazing view of the mountains and it’s just beautiful. Full hookups so that was a super plus. I definitely plan on going back soon. Must visit this site when you have a chance!

Camp site was clean had a cute little pond to walk around. We also played on the tennis courts (they provided tennis raquets and balls). We made a day trek to death valley national park, which took about 2 hours from the site. The camp site was nice because it was quiet and not super busy. We took our two kids and 2 dogs, everyone had a great time!
