Pets are allowed at campsites #2 and #3 only. These campsites are farthest from the horses and dogs. Please keep dogs on leash at all times.

At an elevation just under 3000 feet, the Ridge gets lots of sun, with cold nights and hot days in winter and summer respectively. This is a drier climate between May - October meaning some risk of smoke impacts from area forests, although the mountainside location generally offers clean fresh air with stunning sunsets and excellent stargazing. Best to arrive in daylight to orient and take in the scene! Count on fair to good cell service, limited central wifi and power.
The land contains over a mile of trails with vistas, rock features, gnarly old "bonsai" oak trees, native plants and wildflowers. Your stay here directly supports ongoing conservation, watershed protection and fire mitigation work around the site, inquire if curious! Wildlife is prolific, mostly the friendly sort however visitors should be mindful to avoid unwelcome encounters, and any small children or pets kept under close watch. Your host can address questions or concerns.
The property is not a park, playground, or big backyard, in fact probably not much like anyplace you've been...prepare for a novel experience! Come as a guest, not a customer, and find yourself at home in the wild. Activity and development on site are minimized to enhance natural habitat and ambience. Guests are advised to minimize disturbance of other occupants and lifeforms--it's fine to have fun and make some intermittent noise but disruptive or damaging behavior will be curtailed. This is an extremely quiet spot with access through a private gate. It is a one minute walk from The Gateway Hiking and Biking trailhead and right on the way to Bunny Flat and further up the mountain. I do not have bathroom facilities, but I do have electricity and water. There is a covered cold water sink available to wash face/hands/dishes or to obtain drinking water. Winter reminder: We live at 4,000 ft and it is cold in the winter. There may be snow and you may need to do a little shoveling ( snow shovels are on property). Your vehicle should have all winter tires or chains, the campsite is not on a paved road and the site itself may not be plowed. The water to the cold water sink is shut off in the winter to avoid pipes freezing. There are no streetlights; we live in the country. There ARE lights at the property entrance gate.

Both camps are located at the end of the road not far from Interstate 5. Behind the gate is our property and a short, fairly steep driveway to the top. Vehicle length limited to 20ft. and trailers limited to 18ft. AWD, 4WD, and FWD recommended. The top is flat and has room to turnaround. The mountains are calling!
Whether you’re here for climbing Castle Crags, boating on Shasta Lake, or enjoying the quiet, this off-the-beaten-path retreat offers a true NorCal wilderness experience. The Upper Sacramento River is just three miles away, with swimming holes, kayaking rapids, and fishing spots which are some of the closest activities without needing to drive on the freeway.
The camps are on the north side (North Camp) and the south side (South Camp) separated by the small home and are shady in the summer late afternoons. First come, first serve bases. Picnic tables, potable water, and power outlets are available.
Conveniences are less than 20 minutes in the little town of Lakehead. It has gas stations, and a nicely stocked general store and Camp Shasta restaurant with great food and a cool mountain vibe!
This is true wilderness, yet only 10 minutes the freeway. Expect mosquitoes, flies, and other bugs. There is poison oak around, but not in the camping area, so please prepare accordingly. There are bears, foxes, deer, snakes, and other wildlife in the area. A bear box is provided for food storage.

This is a drier climate between May - October meaning some risk of smoke impacts from area forests, although the mountainside location generally offers clean fresh air with stunning sunsets and excellent stargazing. Best to arrive in daylight to orient and take in the scene! Count on fair to good cell service, limited central wifi and power.
The land contains over a mile of trails with vistas, rock features, gnarly old "bonsai" oak trees, native plants and wildflowers. Your stay here directly supports ongoing conservation, watershed protection and fire mitigation work around the site, inquire if curious! Wildlife is prolific, mostly the friendly sort however visitors should be mindful to avoid unwelcome encounters, and any small children or pets kept under close watch. Your host can address questions or concerns.
The property is not a park, playground, or big backyard, in fact probably not much like anyplace you've been...prepare for a novel experience! Come as a guest, not a customer, and find yourself at home in the wild. Activity and development on site are minimized to enhance natural habitat and ambience. Winter reminder: We live at 4,000 ft and it is cold in the winter. There may be snow and you may need to do a little shoveling ( snow shovels are on property). Your vehicle should have all winter tires or chains, the campsite is not on a paved road and the site itself may not be plowed. The water to the cold water sink is shut off in the winter to avoid pipes freezing. There are no streetlights; we live in the country. There ARE lights at the property entrance gate.

Whether you’re here for climbing Castle Crags, boating on Shasta Lake, or enjoying the quiet, this off-the-beaten-path retreat offers a true NorCal wilderness experience. The Upper Sacramento River is just three miles away, with swimming holes, kayaking rapids, and fishing spots which are some of the closest activities without needing to drive on the freeway.
The camps are on the north side (North Camp) and the south side (South Camp) separated by the small home and are shady in the summer late afternoons. First come, first serve bases. Picnic tables, potable water, and power outlets are available.
Conveniences are less than 20 minutes in the little town of Lakehead. It has gas stations, and a nicely stocked general store and Camp Shasta restaurant with great food and a cool mountain vibe!

The Goat Shed has no electricity and all lighting is provided by LED rechargeable and/or solar lighting. Check area temperatures before booking! The northern Sacramento Valley often reaches temperatures over 100* in July and August which can make for an unpleasant stay!

Beautiful site, view is epic! Host was very welcoming and friendly. He stopped by real quick when we first arrived and offered fire wood, and let us know he built a bathroom!
FYI it does get windy so be sure to bring the proper equipment! I think it’s an on and off thing but just be sure 🫡

Cool airstreams and cottages backing to waking paths in the arboretum. It’s a small town, so close to grocery store and waterfall hiking trail. Friendly and helpful staff. It is right off the highway, so there is some muted road noise, but the provided earplugs and eye masks were a nice touch (although we didn’t find they were needed for us to test comfortably).

Great spot that was sheltered enough from the highway that we got a great night's sleep. Also, I had called, didn't leave a message, and got a callback from Tammy in under 10 minutes. We had already driven to another place but went back to Wonderland mostly because of noise concerns. No regrets, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay again. Heated bathrooms were a nice touch!

Johanna was such an amazing host! Very communicative and helpful, but also hands off unless you need something. Which, I didn't once I was there. The goat shed had everything I could possibly need and more! I had forgot the cable to charge my headlamp, but a a charging cable was provided and worked great with the power bank. The hot water was a great touch. I slept great! Will make sure to re-book if I need somewhere to stay in the area again!

Easily one of the best places we’ve stayed. The convenience, amenities and value were phenomenal and these hosts go above and beyond to give you a comfortable and very leisurely experience. Being able to get a last-minute reservation here on our way home was so fortunate for us, and we’ll definitely be back! Usually this is a convenient stopping point for us when travelling between WA and CA, but now we are already talking about coming back to this very spot for a dedicated vacation here. The suite has everything you could need and more— huge bonus points for great WiFi, private hot tub, and bussing station and laundry baskets right outside the door. Easy check in. The property outside was so wonderful, we loved being greeted by free range turkeys when we got out of the car, and walking the property to see all the livestock and fun features of the place. Between that and the interior style, it really feels like the perfect authentic Northern CA getaway. Looking forward to being back soon!

I loved my one night stay in Caboose #11! The caboose was clean and cozy, the hot tub was lovely in the rain, and dinner in the dining car was delicious. I had my dog with me and there were no problems with that, the property was dog-friendly as described (just had to pay a $25 pet fee when reserving through Hipcamp, not sure if that's the same if you book through their website directly). Everything was easy & nice! Would definitely stay here again.
