When we retired 13 years ago, we discovered this lovely piece of Paradise in Miranda, located on the famous Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt County. Six years ago, we remodeled the basement and created what we call the “Garden Apt”. We have nine apple trees, a cherry tree, a fig tree, and a Concord grape arbor. It’s a 1/4-mile walk into the town of Miranda, where you will find the Miranda Market and gas & electric stations (well-stocked), as well as The Avenue Cafe (loved the Big Foot fries). Next door to the Post Office is The Palace restaurant, famous for the best ribeye steaks in Northern California! The Chimney Tree cafe is 6 miles south of Miranda on The Avenue of the Giants, along the river. There is a lovely trail that leads to what we locals refer to as “The Grove”, which is a beautiful walk in the redwoods just across the road on the Avenue. You can drive to a parking spot to start a walk on this path as well. When viewing the pictures, I’m sure you saw a picture of our dogs, aka our “kids”. Mojo is the grey one, and Karma is the blonde one. We also have a black cat called Magic who would love to have coffee with you in the mornings. Other residents you may see or hear are wild turkeys, quail, squirrels, foxes, and you will hear our neighbor’s chickens and ducks as well. You may also hear some donkeys braying in the distance.

Enjoy the birds in the morning and frogs on the pond at night from your well equipped tent with queen mattress and comfy comforters, sitting space, and wood counter for food prep. ( propane ok) No fires allowed at site but enjoy the large communal fire pit and terrace steps away. Our deep water pond (15 ft) is FULL and ready for warm summer swims. Wifi and electric for charging and an electric water kettle for coffee making is available at the communal space. EV charging is possible but slow off of our solar panels. Hiking trails on our 500 acre property and Lost Coast Trail at Shelter Cove Black Sands beach is 1 hour away. Ave of the Giants is 45 minutes away. We encourage 2 night stays as it is a bit of a trek to get here. Your hosts have everything you might need ( cooking wise) and can arrange for cooking equipment and utensils. Need Paella pans? Paella is our passion and we can offer a Paella Cookout customized to your dietary needs for an additional fee. We are 5 miles up a private dirt road ( 2 wheel drive is ok but caution to lower clearance vehicles) You will be deep in the relaxing forest. The 16 foot bell tent is quite large and can accommodate 2 more travelers. However they would need to provide sleeping bags and mats. Children under 10 not recommended The Chimes tent is slightly smaller 13 foot bell tent set on a platform 6 feet off the ground-- literally in the trees! We provide one citronella candle. When we retired 13 years ago, we discovered this lovely piece of Paradise in Miranda, located on the famous Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt County. Six years ago, we remodeled the basement and created what we call the “Garden Apt”. We have nine apple trees, a cherry tree, a fig tree, and a Concord grape arbor. It’s a 1/4-mile walk into the town of Miranda, where you will find the Miranda Market and gas & electric stations (well-stocked), as well as The Avenue Cafe (loved the Big Foot fries). Next door to the Post Office is The Palace restaurant, famous for the best ribeye steaks in Northern California! The Chimney Tree cafe is 6 miles south of Miranda on The Avenue of the Giants, along the river. There is a lovely trail that leads to what we locals refer to as “The Grove”, which is a beautiful walk in the redwoods just across the road on the Avenue. You can drive to a parking spot to start a walk on this path as well. When viewing the pictures, I’m sure you saw a picture of our dogs, aka our “kids”. Mojo is the grey one, and Karma is the blonde one. We also have a black cat called Magic who would love to have coffee with you in the mornings. Other residents you may see or hear are wild turkeys, quail, squirrels, foxes, and you will hear our neighbor’s chickens and ducks as well. You may also hear some donkeys braying in the distance.

Our land is part of an old collectively owned by "back to the landers" group from the 70's. The parcel is over 500 acres, but our portion is about 40 acres. There is a large deepwater pond with a rowboat (and frogs) orchard, stream, and many hiking trails my husband created and dirt roads winding through the property. 420 friendly! Enjoy the birds in the morning and frogs on the pond at night from your well equipped tent with queen mattress and comfy comforters, sitting space, and wood counter for food prep. ( propane ok) No fires allowed at site but enjoy the large communal fire pit and terrace steps away. Our deep water pond (15 ft) is FULL and ready for warm summer swims. Wifi and electric for charging and an electric water kettle for coffee making is available at the communal space. EV charging is possible but slow off of our solar panels. Hiking trails on our 500 acre property and Lost Coast Trail at Shelter Cove Black Sands beach is 1 hour away. Ave of the Giants is 45 minutes away. We encourage 2 night stays as it is a bit of a trek to get here. Your hosts have everything you might need ( cooking wise) and can arrange for cooking equipment and utensils. Need Paella pans? Paella is our passion and we can offer a Paella Cookout customized to your dietary needs for an additional fee. We are 5 miles up a private dirt road ( 2 wheel drive is ok but caution to lower clearance vehicles) You will be deep in the relaxing forest. The 16 foot bell tent is quite large and can accommodate 2 more travelers. However they would need to provide sleeping bags and mats. Children under 10 not recommended The Chimes tent is slightly smaller 13 foot bell tent set on a platform 6 feet off the ground-- literally in the trees! We provide one citronella candle. I just got back from a lovely weekend at Sunny’s cabin with my two kids, and it was exactly what we needed. The cabin is tucked into the redwoods, quiet and peaceful, and it really felt like a little forest adventure for the kids. Our favorite part was sitting by the fire at night, talking and relaxing together. Sunny was a wonderful host. She was warm, responsive, and helpful whenever I had a question, but also gave us plenty of privacy. Her two friendly dogs were a huge hit with the kids and made the place feel even more welcoming. I left feeling rested, my kids had a great time, and I would happily come back. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a cozy, nature-filled getaway.

Weekend Trip to Lost Coast

What a gem, hidden in the tiny hamlet of Petrolia! We stayed in the Garden Cabin which was a small cabin large enough only for a queen-sized bed, mini-fridge, and a couple of shelves for the tea kettle and some bowls. Very charming and perfect for a short stay especially when one has other activities to occupy the day. There is an outdoor shower and clawfoot bathtub with plenty of hot water, and an Adirondack loveseat with a propane fire (no wood fires allowed.)

This was my second visit, and it was just as enjoyable as the first. My friends and I stayed in the Sunshine and Mushroom cabins and loved how comfortable and well-set-up everything was. Nathan’s daughter helped us get the wood stove going, which made breakfast in the kitchen extra cozy. We’re already talking about coming back next year. My friends and I stayed in the Sunshine and Mushroom cabins and appreciated how cozy and convenient everything was. Sunny is so sweet and this place is so charming! I had a lovely time staying here while visiting Mendocino, which is about 40 mins away. There were a couple things I was anxious about - windey roads and the steep driveway to get down to Sunny’s land - but all turned out fine and she put me right at ease. The cabin itself is very cute, outdoor kitchen and shower well functioning, and the dogs kept me company when I was by myself at night!

Our host Elisa was very helpful and communicative! The view outside our cabin was beautiful and peaceful. When we did run into people living on the property, they were friendly and kind. When exploring the area there were a lot of different mushrooms and birds to enjoy. My only complaint would be that the ladder to the loft bed was hard to climb and the couch bed was uncomfortable. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay!

I had a lovely, cozy stay at Bon's cabin. The location is perfect - 10 mins from Elk, 20 mins to Mendocino village, 25 mins to Philo - and the drive is stunning. The cabin itself is incredibly private and cozy with all the amenities, from a full kitchen, to an equipped bathroom, to comfy beds. Then there's the outdoor tub (!!!), wood-fired sauna, and pizza oven. Though Bon has provided space heaters, one of my favorite parts of my stay was keeping the cabin nice and warm with the wood stove. Truly a perfect fall getaway, I can't wait to come back!

We loved Sunnyland! The directions were clear and driving in was beautiful. We did have some trouble driving up (2wd) to leave but Sunny was super helpful and we made it out! I had such a wonderful stay at California Woods by the Sea – Ashram. From the moment I arrived, I felt surrounded by peace and quiet—the tall trees and natural setting make it feel like a true retreat. At the same time, it’s so convenient to get to, which makes it easy to slip away without much effort. The host was fantastic—very communicative, helpful, and welcoming. The site itself was neat, clean, and thoughtfully set up. The beds were surprisingly comfy, and I really appreciated the basic coffee setup in the morning. Having a flush toilet and internet on-site were such great perks that made the stay even more comfortable, while still keeping the simple, outdoorsy vibe. The outdoor shower was another highlight—refreshing and such a unique experience with the trees all around. Overall, it was the perfect mix of nature, comfort, and convenience. I left feeling relaxed and refreshed, and I’m already looking forward to coming back.
