Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation.
Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers.
Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 150+ foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Freckled throughout the hillsides are thousands of humongous granite boulders, offering a prehistoric feel to the landscape. Above all, Splitrock offers unrivaled views. Nopalito Farm has been in operation since late 2014, but the property itself has been a working farm for over 50 years. Lemons and avocados were the primary crops from the 70’s through the 00’s, and are still prominent throughout our 15 acres. Nopalito Farm has been in operation since late 2014, but the property itself has been a working farm for over 50 years. Lemons and avocados were the primary crops from the 70’s through the 00’s, and are still prominent throughout our 15 acres. Our predecessors then diversified the growing operation by planting a wide range of fruit trees ranging from guavas and passion fruit to peaches and figs. For a decade, hops were grown on 2 acres and were sold to breweries throughout southern California. We’ve since replaced the hop yard with perennial flowers, but continue to cultivate a wide variety of delicious fruits.

If you’re looking for a quiet spot close to restaurants, beaches, and open-space hiking, Canyon-View Escape in Del Mar is a perfect location. I walked to and from Del Mar and the beaches every day, and that alone made the stay special. I’d definitely recommend this place.

I highly recommend a stay here. I stayed 2 nights in my Sprinter van at this location. Kimberly was quick with messaging approval with directions. Access was very good as well as the directions to it. I found it to be a quiet place with no traffic which made for great nights sleep. Plan on adventure with the trail adjacent to the property tracking south to a beach location via a few neighborhoods with very low traffic roads.

FIRST TIMER— Visited for two days, was such a mesmerizing experience! Being able to camp in nature was a beauty! Such a great space, lots of trees, goats, and a Great Pyrenees that checks up on you here and there! The land is disbursed, so you can camp mostly anywhere— lots of spots! They have fire pits mostly at every spot— clean, earthy, and beautiful! Lots of space to go on walks/morning jogs! There are restrooms and a shower steps away from the campsite. Pretty clean secluded space up in Fallbrook! Definitely recommend to check it out for a weekend or a couple of days!

Lacy and Ben were the kindest, most accommodating hosts that we have experienced on Hip camp so far. They were very welcoming and attentive, as we enjoyed conversation with them. Although the Owl Creek site was not a good fit for us, they were very flexible and guided us in moving to the Cricket Cove site which was just right. Private, peaceful and quiet as well as surrounded with a natural beauty including a spring fed pond, it was just what we were looking for. Although the drive and turn into the spot seemed challenging at first, it was no problem and the site itself was roomy and level complete with electric availability.

Weekend Trip to Campo Nopalito
Jacob’s Little Cabin was the perfect first glamping experience. The cabin is just big enough for the fully made comfortable bed, and the wall that opens up like a garage door gives you a stunning view. It truly feels like camping, but with zero stress.
Jacob was very kind and helpful without being intrusive, and we loved his dog Gertie — she was playful and even got along great with our dog, who usually doesn’t like other dogs.
The kitchen was the highlight, especially the pizza oven. Making our own pizza was such a fun experience. The bathroom was spotless, and he even has an outdoor hot shower. Everything you need is provided — pots, pans, dishes, silverware, drinking water, and seasonings.
An easy five-star stay. We’d absolutely come back.

My dog, husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Granite Gulch!! What a unique campground. Views were beautiful. Super private fire pit. Goats were very quiet at night too. Can’t wait to come back and check out the other spaces on Benjamins land as well. Also our air mattress pump died and the host was super quick to respond in providing options for renting bedding if we’d like. Highly recommend for a quick getaway even for a night it’s so worth it!

Absolutely stunning scenery — waking up to the sunrise and layered hills was unforgettable. Directions and mapping were very clear and well thought out, which made arrival stress-free. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, even helping us select firewood, which was a really thoughtful touch.
That said, the temperature drops significantly at night and the wind can be strong, so proper preparation is important. One of the highlights was meeting the two large white farm dogs — they were gentle, friendly, and felt like the best natural guides around the property.
Overall, a peaceful and memorable stay. Would love to come back and experience this place in a different season.

This was a really nice getaway with amazing views! Vicki is awesome and so accommodating. She helps you find a good spot when you get there so if you want the most options, get in as close to check in as possible. It is off grid so make sure you’re prepared with gear cuz no electricity. I don’t know if this is normal, but temps changed drastically for us during the day. Dropped probably 30 degrees at night. We camped mid January and were in shorts in the day but would’ve frozen at night if we didn’t bring our own heaters. Cell service works but is a bit weak. Road up the mountain is narrow, bumpy, and sometimes steep. Just to keep in mind if bringing trailers. But great trip if you want beautiful Mountain View’s!
