Three years ago our multi-generational family decided to go on an adventure. We had talked about moving to the woods for years, but finally decided to turn our dreams into reality. After hiking through what felt like every property for sale over 100 acres in North Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, we finally found the perfect spot.
Why do we call our property Whippoorwill Woods? Did you know that whippoorwills don’t nest in trees? They lay their eggs on the ground in the forest. They’re birds that love camping! As soon as we heard the whippoorwills start singing in the spring, we knew it was the perfect name.
We’re so excited to share our property with campers who love nature as much as we do. We specifically set up the campsites to give as much privacy as possible. We hope you’ll come visit and soak up the bird songs, the wind in the trees, and the beautiful sunsets over the mountains. We have 20 acres of savannah grassland full of native plants and wildflowers and over 80 untouched acres full of awesome rock formations and creeks with waterfalls available for you to hike. There's a gorgeous view overlooking the Cumberland Plateau and the Sherwood Valley.
Experienced and beginner campers are welcome! We live on one side of the property, so we’re available to assist (setting up tents for the first few times is no joke!) or we’re happy to give you as much space and solitude as you need. We have three campsites available in the native savannah grassland. We have a porta-potty available, but you'll need to bring your water with you. If you have any questions, or if there’s anything we can do to help, don’t hesitate to ask!

We invite you to our little slice of paradise! Enjoy the natural beauty of Lookout Mountain in Mentone, AL. Folklore Forest has 270 feet of Little River Frontage for you to enjoy. Considered to be the purest, natural flowing river in the state, bring your fishing gear and kayaks. Listen to Pipwild Spring trickling over the mossy rock waterfall. Sit at the water’s edge under canopies of rhododendrons and holly trees, and sit at your campfire and view the stunning starry nightscape.
The space
Our 10x12 foot canvas safari tent offers a cozy 120 sq ft of space which can accommodate a twin size mattress in addition to the provided queen bed.
Here's what you find inside:
- 2 Queen size beds with headboard, memory foam mattress, and antimicrobial waterproof cover.
- Comforter, 8 pillows (with antimicrobial covers), and furry blanket.
- Side table with reading material and games.
- Mr Heater propane space heater with 20 lb propane tank.
- 6 person Coleman pop up tent.
- Cart with coffee, silverware, plates, cups, bowls, French press, salt/pepper, sugar, kitchen and grill utensils, cutting board, and oven mitt.
- Propane camp stove with fuel.
- Battery powered fan.
- Portable battery powered lantern.
- Cast iron dutch oven, non stick skillet, medium sauce pan, small wok, and kettle.
- 2 wash tubs.
- Handmade broom.
- 1 person hammock.
Here's what you'll find outside:
- Wagon to help you bring luggage down from the car or to gather firewood.
- 6ft picnic table.
- Cafe table and two chairs.
- 3 Adirondack chairs.

You need to bring:

Also recommended to bring:

- Extra wood (you can burn any fallen wood/twigs you find but don’t cut trees!
- Extra water (river water is pure but we always recommend boiling or filtering anything you drink)
Guest access
Folklore Forest is on 3 acres and has 270 feet of River Frontage at your disposal. Little River is considered to be the purest, natural flowing river in the state. Bring your fishing gear and kayaks. Sit on the rocks at the base of the waterfall under the rhododendrons and holly trees, and wade in the water in the warm months.
Park on the side of the road in front of the Cynefin sign. There are solar lights illuminating the path to the tent if you arrive after dark. There you will find a that you can use to bring your luggage down.
Other things to note
• The river will rise and fall depending on how much rain we are getting. It tends to be lower late summer to early fall. We cannot guarantee water levels.
• This is primitive off grid camping. There's no electricity or running water. We recommend bringing a portable battery pack to charge devices.
• Please be respectful of any wildlife (there are white tail deer, raccoons, weasels, harmless black snakes, mink, foxes, coyotes, many birds, and the extremely, and we do mean extremely, rare black bear), while fishing in the little river is allowed, hunting is prohibited.

Camp Travelhick is located off an easy on/off main road. A small private driveway leads to an automatic 20' wide secure, coded gate.
The camp has two level camping sites. Site 1 is a large 40x62 cement site that can accommodate larger campers/motorhomes with full hookups (electric, water, & sewer). Site 2 is a smaller packed gravel site which is 16x32 with electric and water. Both sites have 50/30/amp connections. For your convenience, there is an additional dump station on the property.
Our camping area offers a covered pavilion with two picnic tables, lighting, fans, and a charcoal grill. There is also has an outdoor fire pit for those cold nights or for s’mores! The camping area is about 1.3 acres fully fenced in so pet owners can allow their pets run around and have some secure space without having to worry about a leash.
Bring your ATV's or side by sides! The back side of the property has almost 50 acres of ATV and walking trails. A spring fed private 1.5 acre stocked pond with a covered and lighted boat/fishing dock is also located on the property. Covered fishing dock has benches for getting out of the sun and relaxing.
Property is less than 15 minutes from a Walmart, Lake Eufaula, many chain/local restaurants, parks, and museums.
Property owner is not on site, but is just a phone call/text away.

It was very private, well kept, and nice. The highway was a bit noisier than I'd like for a calming trip but it was perfect for my dogs with the trails and pond being private and the fenced in area was amazing. I dread putting up my portable fence each time so that was great! The trails were well kept as well. I was a bit thrown off by the number of cameras throughout the property, I understand monitoring game and the front gate for hunting and trespassing purposes, just took me by surprise. I also would have liked to know about there not being trash services, I was informed through an email right after booking. (Most definitely need an animal proof container for next time given that an animal got into my outdoor kitchen and trash on 2 different nights) It was overall a very nice and affordable spot with all the property and privacy you have. I loved being able to have my dogs off lead on the trails too, it was a very care free and private trip. I will more than likely be coming back even with having a 3 hour drive for it, it's worth the time and money for being able to take 2 dogs and be off lead and still care free the whole time.

Weekend Trip to The Sacred Land of Darsana Wellness
Amazing experience!! Everything on site is newly built, and the host Daniel was absolutely incredible. When I first arrived, he asked for me to give any feedback on what could be done better, and honestly, he hit it out of the park, everything was perfect. I stayed in the Ashram, a cozy space that still allows you to hear the ambience of the woods while you sleep in comfort. It is very evident Daniel has poured his soul and sweat into this and that reflects in the experience. The Ashram was well stocked with a litany of general supplies and a mini fridge. There’s a couple amazing restaurants 1/2 mile away and a dollar general for shopping needs. Even after a crazy weekend at Talladega I still feel unwound from my time out in the forest. I highly recommend giving them a shot, you won’t regret it
