Three years ago our multi-generational family decided to go on an adventure. We had talked about moving to the woods for years, but finally decided to turn our dreams into reality. After hiking through what felt like every property for sale over 100 acres in North Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, we finally found the perfect spot.
Why do we call our property Whippoorwill Woods? Did you know that whippoorwills don’t nest in trees? They lay their eggs on the ground in the forest. They’re birds that love camping! As soon as we heard the whippoorwills start singing in the spring, we knew it was the perfect name.
We’re so excited to share our property with campers who love nature as much as we do. We specifically set up the campsites to give as much privacy as possible. We hope you’ll come visit and soak up the bird songs, the wind in the trees, and the beautiful sunsets over the mountains. We have 20 acres of savannah grassland full of native plants and wildflowers and over 80 untouched acres full of awesome rock formations and creeks with waterfalls available for you to hike. There's a gorgeous view overlooking the Cumberland Plateau and the Sherwood Valley.
Experienced and beginner campers are welcome! We live on one side of the property, so we’re available to assist (setting up tents for the first few times is no joke!) or we’re happy to give you as much space and solitude as you need. We have three campsites available in the native savannah grassland. We have a porta-potty available, but you'll need to bring your water with you. If you have any questions, or if there’s anything we can do to help, don’t hesitate to ask!

A few notes on the property:
Most people have never used an EcoToilet and don’t realize it takes some work. If you have children, you will very likely have to do this part for them.
We keep the lounge area as clean as possible but at the end of the day it is an outdoor kitchen! Kitchenwares will have a layer of dust even if cleaned the day prior, so please give everything a rinse before you using!
You may read about mosquitoes in some of our past reviews, but I am happy to share that we now have a monthly mosquito service in place that has mitigated that issue :)

The space
Our 10x12 foot canvas safari tent offers a cozy 120 sq ft of space which can accommodate a twin size mattress in addition to the provided queen bed.
Here's what you find inside:
- 2 Queen size beds with headboard, memory foam mattress, and antimicrobial waterproof cover.
- Comforter, 8 pillows (with antimicrobial covers), and furry blanket.
- Side table with reading material and games.
- Mr Heater propane space heater with 20 lb propane tank.
- 6 person Coleman pop up tent.
- Cart with coffee, silverware, plates, cups, bowls, French press, salt/pepper, sugar, kitchen and grill utensils, cutting board, and oven mitt.
- Propane camp stove with fuel.

Guest access
Folklore Forest is on 3 acres and has 270 feet of River Frontage at your disposal. Little River is considered to be the purest, natural flowing river in the state. Bring your fishing gear and kayaks. Sit on the rocks at the base of the waterfall under the rhododendrons and holly trees, and wade in the water in the warm months.
Park on the side of the road in front of the Cynefin sign. There are solar lights illuminating the path to the tent if you arrive after dark. There you will find a that you can use to bring your luggage down.
Other things to note
• The river will rise and fall depending on how much rain we are getting. It tends to be lower late summer to early fall. We cannot guarantee water levels.
• This is primitive off grid camping. There's no electricity or running water. We recommend bringing a portable battery pack to charge devices.
• Please be respectful of any wildlife (there are white tail deer, raccoons, weasels, harmless black snakes, mink, foxes, coyotes, many birds, and the extremely, and we do mean extremely, rare black bear), while fishing in the little river is allowed, hunting is prohibited.

We stayed two nights at Buck Creek Junction and had the whole place to ourselves, which made it incredibly peaceful. We met Jennifer when we arrived, and she was very nice and welcoming. I caught three catfish right in front of Site 6, which made the trip even better. If you bring what you need and enjoy primitive camping, you really don’t have to leave the property. It’s a quiet, simple spot that’s perfect for relaxing by the creek.

Weekend Trip to Parksland Retreat
Great stay! Everyone is quite laid back, the property is well tended and neat. Be aware that walking to most campsites/bell tents or the cabin requires a good deal of downhill travel and uphill travel to get back to the center of camp and parking area. I would estimate the equivalent of 3 to 5 flights of stairs is common to most of the individual camp sites with the exception of Hill Top. There is an accessible cabin under construction.
If you like a laid back atmosphere where you can take time away from your devices, this is a great place to do it.

If you want to really relax clothes free then this is the place. Whether you just relax alone at your campsite or want to have a more community space. Then this is the place for you. It is more primitive than most campsites but its a plus for me. You can go a few days without your electronics and really enjoy nature in its fullest.

Parksland is such an awesome place to unplug for a weekend. I've done both the primitive camping and the glamping in the yurts with a memory foam mattress. If you get the chance to go on a weekend for a Solstice or Equinox you're in for a real treat! Sauna session, bonfire, and more. This has quickly become one of my favorite places to escape to!
Yes, it's clothing optional but you can wear as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. My main observation is that the majority of people I've met there book their 2nd stay before they leave.

The campsites are far enough apart that you have plenty of privacy. The views are beautiful. Unfortunately we didn't get to see and experience everything he has to offer due to being a very quick overnight trip and getting there after dark, but we will definitely be going back for a planned full weekend soon. Just a piece of advice, if Dusty asks you if you're sure you want a certain site, especially the P3 Creekside, listen to the man!! Don't get me wrong it's a gorgeous site, but it is quite the hike. So if you're old and out of shape like me, pack light and go with his recommendation lol...... Anyway, Thanks Dusty for giving people like is a place like this we can enjoy without negativity and judgement! You are awesome!!! Looking forward to seeing you again and getting the full experience!

Our fist time we tent camped at Bates farms. It was the perfect place and beautiful scenery all around. The second stay was a 10 day Rv camping. My spot i needed electricity hook up. I was close to restrooms, shower house, washer and dryer also ice was available there was an ice machine. My stay was very convenient close to where I needed to be. If you love to walk and explore like I do you want be disappointed. Beautiful place and nature all around.

Nice grassy area and shaded tent spot with easily accessible power outlet. Showers and toilets were clean, air conditioned, and a welcome break from the Alabama sun and sweat. Will be coming back when we visit again!

1 night at Bohamia - Glamp/RV/Camp
Loved staying here, and will definitely have to go again sometime to really explore the whole property. We were only there for the night on our way home from a long road trip. Leigh was very communicative and greeted us and showed us around when we arrived. She was very friendly and helpful!
The campsites were in the mountains, tucked into a quiet forest without light pollution, so you could really see the stars. The A-frames are comfy and cozy, and have decks with seating, fire pits, and coffee machines. The bed was so comfortable! Plenty of places to plug in your electrics. The property was extremely well-kept on terms of cleanliness. The bathrooms are close by and also very clean and well stocked. Such a beautiful way to end our adventure!
The path up the mountain is pretty steep and rocky, so wouldn't recommend taking a low-sitting vehicle. Some of the A-frames have steps and rocks to hike over, but there are other accessible options on the property as well.

I loved P3 Creekside as it really feels like you're all alone with nature. You have the creek right there along with the Ridgeline loop trail if you want to do it. Its big enough for 2-3 small 1-4 person tents, so bring a group, or 1 to 2 of the 8-10 person tents. Just know you'll likely be on a slight slope depending on the position.
Now the BIGGEST thing to remember is that it is no joke you'll have a hike from your car to the site and back. I HIGHLY recommend you only bring enough supplies for 2-3 trips per person. Keep everything else you may need at your car. If you're not mildly prepared and young or in shape, it will be a major challenge. But worth it in the end.
P3 is now one of our favorite places!
