Every morning that I wake up at Cinco I think how fortunate I am to have a place on this earth where I am excited to be. Whether it is sweaty-hot summertime or deep-freeze, snow-covered wintertime I treasure the moments sipping a cup of tea on the riverbank listening to the birds competing over food and mates...or to the ice breaking up with the morning heat. This is a unique site located in the Ozark Highlands. Only 45 minutes from Cape Girardeau (a small river town on the Mississippi), and 45 minutes from the Arcadia Valley including Taum Sauk mountain (the highest point in Missouri), Elephant Rocks, the Johnston Shutins, and other beautiful areas in the highlands.  The farm is five minutes from Marble Hill, which is home to the Bollinger County Natural History museum which highlights the only dinosaur bones found in Missouri. The bones were found at a farm in Glennallen (a few minutes from our farm) as well as a great barbeque (Jay’s Restaurant) and a good catfish restaurant (Jers Restaurant). On the way to our farm, feel free to stop at the 1,700 foot deep artesian well to get a cool, refreshing jug of natural artesian well water – the water is free, but you have to bring your own containers!  We are two and a half hours southwest of St. Louis, and two and half hours northwest of Memphis.

We loved our stay at R & T Farms. Not only were the hosts very gracious and hands off but we met some animal friends as well. Would highly recommend this stay for anyone passing through St. Louis or just looking for a relaxing getaway on a quaint family farm!

We had a lovely 3 night stay on Ryan and Tanya’s beautiful property. The site was large, level and easy to maneuver around with a west facing view. Every sunset was stunning. It was very private with 30amp and sewer. We filled our fresh water tank when we arrived. There are hoses long enough to reach the site if you need to refill. The hosts were easy to communicate with and quick to respond to any questions. St Louis is an easy 30 minute drive if you want to explore. There are also a couple small towns that are closer with provisions, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. Ryan and Tanya were wonderful, kind hosts. We will definitely stay again next time we’re in the area.

Darrell and Jeanna were excellent hosts; they were friendly and helpful while also being mindful of the importance of the solitude needed to thoroughly enjoy their beautiful property. We will definitely go back for another visit (or more). This visit was towards the end of November, so the shower and privy were welcome comforts in the brisk weather, though also invigorating. Fireside relaxation was the primary activity as we watched an impressive variety of birds by the pond. With the lack of light pollution, the stargazing opportunities were a treat. We hope to be back for the wine harvest next year!

Such a great spot for a getaway! The campground was peaceful, well-kept, and had everything we could’ve needed for a perfect tent camping weekend. The lake views were absolutely stunning—especially with all the fall colors reflecting on the water. The bathhouse felt luxurious for camping! We loved every minute of our stay and can’t wait to come back next time to stay in one of the cabins!

Weekend Trip to Spring Lake Ranch

We absolutely loved our stay here! The campground was beautiful—tucked right by a gorgeous lake surrounded by stunning fall colors. It felt like an adult summer camp in the best way possible! Everything we needed was right on site, from fire pits to picnic areas. The bath and shower house was impressively clean, warm, and one of the nicest we’ve seen at a campground. You can tell the owners put a lot of care into maintaining the place. We had such a peaceful, cozy stay and can’t wait to come back again next season!

The farm and staff are absolutely fantastic! We had an issue with charges, which they resolved with some investment of time on their part. They all I’ve and beyond in service. Helping us find our site in the dark, making sure we had enough supplies and even throwing a pair of jeans in the dryer for our teenager 😁 Truly kind people!

Weekend Trip to Arcadia Valley BaseCamp

The site was very quiet and we were the only campers in the area. It was secluded and a great spot for a getaway. The firewood on-site was a big plus for us. We were also grateful for the extremely clean porta potty on site. Hosts were not on site that we could tell, but it was not needed anyway for our stay.

Weekend Trip to Arcadia Valley Outdoors Land

We camped in the safari tent and had a cozy lovely time. Although it was in a loop with other campsites it felt plenty private, set back from the road and separated from the other sites by plenty of trees. Didn't end up trying the tub, but it looked nice. The wood stove kept us warm throughout the night, and the solar power bank and water pump were a nice touch.

it is probably a great site to camp on. i never got the chance, i called left message that i had broken down along the way and needed to cancel. i think i tried to email them as well, but my cell service was intermittent from where i was at. i requested a refund as i couldn’t make the stay. left my info, and number/site. never heard back from them. so i ended up wasting $175 (three nights-weekend). i still haven’t heard much from them.

Overview

About

Hawn State Park is considered one of Missouri’s prettiest parks, with diverse woodlands and sandstone bluffs towering above the scenic Pickle Creek. Located less than 30 minutes southwest of Ste. Genevieve, the park is a good basecamp for exploring this charming, historic city, which celebrates a French Canadian heritage. Or, take a 45-minute drive to Elephant Rocks State Park to check out the geological wonders found there. Within Hawn State Park, hiking and relaxing are the prime activities. Bird watchers and rockhounds are also sure to be entertained.

Notable campgrounds

Best for adventure seekers: Ten backcountry camping sites are located along the Whispering Pines hiking trail.
Best for big rigs: Hawn Campground’s 50-amp sites have long concrete pads.
Best for tent campers: Hawn Campground offers several wooded walk-in tent sites, which are more accessible than the backcountry sites, while still being separated from the RV-friendly areas.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Reservations open 12 months in advance.
Use the Missouri State Parks website and or call the phone line to book a site.
Reservations are offered April 1 through November 30, but the campground is open year round.
Water and showers are available April 1 through October 31, with one frost-free spigot accessible in the off-season.
Several sites are listed as “basic,” which means they do not offer electric hookups.
Electric sites have 30-amp hookups, with 50-amp only available at specified locations (sites 1-9).

When to go

Hawn State Park offers varied experiences throughout the year. The mix of hardwoods and pines means winter has some color to the forests, though you need to be prepared for camping in cold temperatures, with occasional winter precipitation. In spring, the wildflowers bloom and trees begin to bud. Summer brings full foliage to the forest, though heat and humidity can damper outdoor adventures. Hikers have noted the prevalence of chiggers in late summer. Fall brings changing colors to the Ozarks hills.

Know before you go

Several campsites back up to Pickle Creek.
Cell service is spotty in this area of Missouri, and you may not have service at your site.
This park locks the gates each evening at 10pm on Sunday through Thursdays nights and at 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. You must arrive before the gates lock to be admitted.
A special-use camping area is offered for large groups.
Hiking is a popular way to experience the park’s varied landscapes, along four available trails ranging from a tenth of a mile to 9.5 miles in length.

Hawn Campground

This campground was breathtaking. It is in the Hawn State Park, so the scenery had me all heart eye emoji the entire time. There are a few great hikes around the campground. I hiked the one at the entrance which was 4.4 miles long. It was so gorgeous, just prepare for spider webs in your face the entire time (worth it though). The campground had showers and bathrooms and while I can't vouch for the showers (who showers while camping?!), the bathrooms were clean enough for me. Would definitely love to go visit this place again.
