Wandi Farm

2 sites · Tents3 acres · Bright, VIC
Wandi Farm is a small scale produce farm under development. It is set on 3 acres on the eastern (sunny) side of the beautiful Wandiligong Valley, just 5 minute drive from Bright. The property is on the side of a hill, which provides spectacular valley views to the north. Our family live in the recently completed straw bale house on the property, which sits well below the camping sites. The property has a fully functional camp kitchen with a large deck as well as a bathroom with toilet and shower. Due to the slope the tent sites are not suitable for camp trailers (the tent sites are flat but there is nowhere flat to park a car next to it) and the tent sites are not suitable for vehicles. Therefore we can only accommodate people with tents/swags.

The Witches Garden on the Mitta Mitta River

3 sites · RVs, Tents110 acres · Mitta Mitta, VIC
Our Mitta River and Callaghan Creek unpowered campsites are along waterways where there is access to the water. Not far from these camp sites is our garden which we open to the public for weddings and events. The gardens are very extensive and beautiful and there are chooks and a large vegie garden and in season (usually summer and autumn) we have excess veg available to campers. We also have chooks and farm animals so dogs must be kept under control. Our area has very little mobile phone coverage but if you are with Telstra you will be fine as there is a Telstra tower not far away. On Callaghan Creek Road we have a peaceful camping spot by the creek. This is in a secluded and very pretty spot on our farm. 4 wheel drive needed as you will be driving across paddocks and down a short steep hill to the creek. Off-road caravan friendly. Children welcome but must be supervised at all times (farms can be dangerous) Well behaved dogs on lead are allowed. No amenities campers must have own camping toilet and be self-contained.

The best camping near Alpine National Park guide

Overview

About

Alpine National Park, in eastern Victoria and bordering New South WalesKosciuszko National Park, is a rugged area of alpine and subalpine terrain and ecosystems. Travellers come here to hike in Victoria’s highest mountains, go mountain biking or horseback riding, and to admire the wildflowers. The park contains a number of dedicated campsites with facilities plus dispersed bush camping—or free camping—is allowed throughout much of the park. An added bonus for horse-loving campers is that several campsites in the Howqua Hills Historic Area and the Bogong High Plains have horse yards–ideal for long-distance horse treks through the mountains.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for horseback riders: Fry’s Flat is one of several dedicated horse camping sites in the park.
  • Best for four-wheel drive travel: Pineapple Flat Camping Area is beside the King River.
  • Best for hikers: Cleve Cole Hut Camping Area is a stop on the way to Mt. Bogong.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. The only campsites in Alpine National Park that require booking and prepayment are those on the three-day Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing hike. These should be booked and paid for online.
  2. Visitors camping with their horses should also book in advance, because only certain campsites have facilities for horses, and numbers are limited. Horse yards are free.

When to go

Alpine National Park can be a year-round destination but most hikers and campers will be more comfortable–and safer–visiting in summer. This is a high-altitude park that is around 6,500 feet (2,000 metres) in places, and snow can fall at any time of year. Visiting Alpine National Park in winter requires specialist backcountry skills, as snow and very cold temperatures are likely. Cross-country and downhill skiing is popular in this park though, so if you are experienced and well-equipped, you can camp here in winter, too. The season for camping with horses is from 1 November to 31 May.

Know before you go

  • High-country huts are dotted around the Alpine National Park and access to them is unrestricted but these are not a regular form of accommodation: visitors are asked to only use them in emergencies, and to carry a tent with them at all times.
  • Visit during the Alpine Discovery Days for a free guided tour of the Wallaces and Cope Hut precinct on the Bogong High Plains with a volunteer park guide.
